How important is EDITION SIZE?, by thesewalls on Jul 1, 2008 4:25:55 GMT 1, Seems as though edition size is a way for modest collectors to bring more value to their pieces (both monetarily and intrinsically). It is always discussed, most of the time along with price. Have the gallerys and print shops brainwashed us? Does the number of a run really help determine it's value? I believe it contributes a very small amount of merit, far less than the emphasis placed. I believe many of us have gotten carried away with this element, and with the price of everything in general. Everyone is SO concerned with the official business of art. I'm not saying you don't love the images, but why? Why so much attention given to statistics? It is generally said that art collectors start with limited edition prints, than move on to originals. I have witnessed many individuals selling off their ltd ed print collection (or at least part of it) in order to fund the purchase of an OG. In the case of Banksy (or any artist where the general population is completely priced out), the ltd ed prints are all the only thing in our grasps, so the perspective is a bit of it's own beast. But for the majority of artists out there, originals are still somewhat attainable. In retrospect, for example, I wish i had laid off some of my ltd ed prints, and saved for originals...or at least heavily worked, low, varied, classic Failes. A lot of their epic prints are now considered originals, since they are so varied , and sometimes have completely different color schemes. At the same time, while some of their edition runs are super low (between 6 - 12 we'll say), and contain hand finishings, there are really 25 - 50 of that print, none of which are THAT different. And now they're doing the big runs, which is awesome for all the fans (i could care less about what it does to the value or market of the print), but it's putting them in the ltd ed print run evaluations. They were, and still are their own beast, but their last 3 big releases (my confessions, rampage, tate image) have entered them into new discussions of value and worth. I think $1250 for a 25 color Faile print is a great deal, as long as you like the image. I don't care if there are 50 of them or 500. But thats me. And thats just one recent example.
I don't mean to be at all negative towards anyone, I just mean to question what is going on with our world. Question the authority of those who officiate, and the reaction of those who stand by. 'Oh this print is good, but this much for an edition of that much?...i think i'll pass the price it too high for the edition size.' OR 'wow reasonable price, especially for how low the edition is'...pretty low blows to the scene...where's your heart at? If you like the artist and like the image, the value is completely subjective. The only time edition size really seems to come into play are on the extreme ends - where it's so low it may as well be an original, or it's so high it may as well be a poster. Haha, and then there's the whole signature thing...will leave that alone for now. I don't pretend to be an expert on this, but I am concerned with the direction the art world is taking (or at least the art world i pretend to know and surely love - street art). I look forward to any and all responses, and thank you in advance for your time and thoughts...and for reading my rant if you made it this far I'm sure there is much I left out...please do assist...

Are faile on to a winner??, by thesewalls on Jul 1, 2008 2:03:44 GMT 1, and yeah, heavy, their August release (their last completely 'live' one) was straight bonkers. the quality was all there, and the amount of different prints available was shocking (twice as good and about twice as many as this one, and to answer your question, yes, this is their style of release). literally, one after the next, better and better. they just kept popping up and slowly disappearing. it was suck a f*cking rush. the 'prints' page looked completely different every 5 minutes or so. they also started with a lot of B&W or single color, cheaper prints, and progressed to the more heavily worked prints. you also sometimes had the 'option' of buying the B&W/single color version, or the full color version, but you didn't necessarily know that at the time. i ended up getting refunded on all 3 prints i bought, but it was still a positive experience in my mind. really quite phenomenal. it surely turned me from fan to a junkie - i had seen nothing like it, ever. than their next release was lottery style. and at the time of their previous release, they were not THAT popular.
Faile is no doubt evolving quite rapidly. As i understand, their heavy hitting will come in their London show. This release was awesome, but overall lacked gusto in my opinion. They must be so busy. However, their style - including how they release their work - has gotten them where they are today, and they'd be fools to abandon it. It is part of what makes Faile Faile. Than again, you could have said that about Aiko a few years ago so who knows. And come on, didn't Brad leave Jennifer for Angelina? So six apples must equal one orange, right?

Are faile on to a winner??, by thesewalls on Jul 1, 2008 1:32:22 GMT 1, yeah, gotta watch out for those "country-jumpers" i've heard some really bad paypal stories over the years, and commend Faile and FairQ for offering another option...to paypal and to maniacal releases. i am genuinely happy to participate in this lottery, and favor it over the old way. that being said, the rush associated with some releases has been greater than the high provided by many substances. it's kind of like seeing your favorite band play live, or watching your team at their stadium. it's an interactive experience...one that a lottery does not provide. however, the lottery makes up for it with freedom, by allowing for a heartfelt decision.

Confused about Faile's Lottery, by thesewalls on Jul 1, 2008 0:59:57 GMT 1, you have the option to buy ONE thing from Faile, at best. each 'Q' is a separate lottery, and you have the chance at winning each one. most people won't win anything. if you do happen to win (be it 1 or 8, originals or not), you will have to pick just one of them to actually purchase. as far as the second chance offers go...well...if you already won something, you will not be considered. don't worry, they wouldn't do that to you as POW used to state (and may still) - they're not a bunch of cowboys. these people are professionals. haha, but they're only human!

US of A?, by thesewalls on Jun 29, 2008 7:14:31 GMT 1, abc and wiki both have their strengths and weaknesses. one is a free for all, the other a conservative conglomerate. you guys are splitting hairs in a sea of apples and oranges. the main source is what counts in the end i suppose, and you two seem like stand up people...no no, stand up filters well done.

TLP and Flying Fortress live painting on ebay , by thesewalls on Jun 27, 2008 7:15:28 GMT 1, I've always been a big fan of TLP. Surely the 'positive vibe' is part of what attracts me...how happy and playful his lines, colors and characters are. The different arrangements of the LADS, from what started as a street thing for me, and evolved to a canvas hanging on my wall thing. His reoccurring characters/thematics thrive from their simplicity and inner workings, flowing together in different ways each time he graces the canvas. In addition, he laces each piece with nice detail, similar to that of Jose Parla. While i'm naming names, Faile recycles images like a mother father (I love Faile!). And D*Face, talk about simple repetition (I have mad love for D*). Chaz (TLP) is no different, his lads are just much more simple. And sometimes, with simplicity comes happiness. I think Chaz captures this feeling quite well. Andrew Mcattee also does this for me. They paint big faaaacking smiles. A friend of mine loves TLP (by the way, TLP has consisted of several people over the years, but currently is just Chaz)...what was i saying...right, he loves TLP because he is reminded of Keith Herring. I've never been a big fan of KH, just another example. Hope that helped, but in the end it's probably just not the kind of tea you drink brother man.
Respect!

Faile prints at not too bad prices, by thesewalls on Jun 26, 2008 9:50:47 GMT 1, no one said "good", the words used were "not too bad". there are a few prints for around 2,000GBP, which is not too bad imo. don't get me wrong, it's not good. especially since that Faile Girl II just sold for around 1600 on ebay a few weeks ago. i'm with you jones27, the whole sophisticated flipper thing is sh*t business. but hey, someones gotta do it right? i mean, they are providing a service...one which many of us have benefited from. again, don't get me wrong, i only buy on the secondary market when my heart won't stop pounding and the price tag has become meaningless, but those have honestly been some of my best buys. i guess it's partly a sh*t business because the same group of people that buy from these 'gallerys' could be just as successful in the endeavor, if only they had the funding. but that comment applies to many sectors. an the world keeps spinning.

I cant belive this..., by thesewalls on Jun 26, 2008 9:23:42 GMT 1, they do heavy, they do. your contributions are always well composed, thoughtful, passionate...and...positively secular (or something). there will always be those who need to put others down in order to feel better about themselves. those who take the easy way out by writing something off as sh*t. those who completely ignored the teachings during their formative years that went a bit like; if you don't have something positive or constructive to say, don't say it at all. which is why we need people like you, to remind us of these simple gospels. preach on brother man, preach on. and to those sour grapes out there (myself at times included): compose yourself, it is possible to express distaste without sounding like a tit.

OLD SKOOL D*FACE IS BACK, by thesewalls on Jun 24, 2008 11:32:54 GMT 1, you're not very eloquent are you J? 'properly' doesn't enter the equation. if you throw out a one liner like that what do you expect is going to happen? i understand where you're coming from, but putting words to something and thinking something are not the same thing...one can not simply 'go with the flow' on a f*cking massive forum, full of thousands of differences and similarities good times nonetheless, you all make me want to come chill in London (and wherever else you're from/live).
respect.

What advice would you give in this situation? , by thesewalls on Jun 17, 2008 6:03:31 GMT 1, He can still f*ck up walls while he does his apprenticeship - it's surely a step in the right direction. Make it part time or something...a chance to prove himself so to speak.
I wonder who else the desperate father sent similar messages to? Maybe he's the one in need of an 'apprenticeship'?

D*Face Website HACKED Again!, by thesewalls on Jun 15, 2008 23:25:39 GMT 1, bleeding smif dude whatever, you have a lot to learn in this life. i pray that you find a productive, happy way to get your angst out. and remember, it's not all about you!
JBOY - you really don't know when to shut up do you. walk away from the computer. i repeat, walk away from the computer. it doesn't take an OG forum member to realize that you are just talking to yourself in most of your posts. people stopped listening to you man. you also need to find a productive, happy way to get your angst out...posting does NOT count.
i truely believe the two of you would be friends in person...you would talk about how cool you were, how much better and more real you were than everyone else. how your sh*t don't stink. it do boys, it do.
