It seems there are increasing numbers of people getting in to all that are from the real art World. It kind of reminds me of the old interviews of the 70's Dinosaur bands, producers etc when Punk came along, trying to rationalise it in their World and by doing so showing how old their views are. I was in Brick Lane a while ago and went into the Shepard Fairey show with girl I know who wanted to see it, but didn't was intimidated by the thought of normal art galleries and the (to quote her) 'poncey people talking rubbish' (she's a good East End girl). Although it was great to see Shep's pieces (well most of them anyway) we had some guy following us around repeatedly stating (to quote again) that the work 'Asked too many questions of the viewer without offering enough answers.'

I've not actually seen this Newsnight yet, but will have a look now, maybe our new 'friend' is one of those people on it...

I thought she was dismissive and didn't fully grasp how relevant Banksy is to contemporary art. However, at least they didn't mention Jolie and Pitt.

Just been to both original and print galleirs today.. I was in awe at finally seeing a real Banksy piece.... fantastic and I recommend anyone who can, to go along and see some pof the most famous banksy pieces for real.

3 things that caught my attention.
1) The horse on galvanised steel that sold earlier this year at auction for 22k was up for sale at 125,000k.

2)Soup can 9/10 as shown above this thread at auction on Ebay was on show

and 3) Trolleys bought only 5 months ago for 425 quid had an asking (and sold) price of 8K!!!!

Did you see the Queen Vic in the print shop? The frame was a beast and really set it off well.

I honestly thought that both venues appear as if the art may disappear any second and the place locked up, boarded over and gone...

..the way those prints are framed is terrible (not all i hasten to add!)..anyone see ripples and poor mounting(shameful) on some of the prints? ..bit poor really considering the art and prices expected!

That said, the art is awesome..

Says in the ebay description "never framed" so I'm curious as to how they've displayed it?

I had a camera but only took pics of the originals. The soup cans were behind perspex on the wall if I remember correclty, and asking price of 12.5k... there were 4, 8 and 9 for sale... so not framed!

The queen vic frame was good, and I agree that some of the prints were very poorly framed. I asked about commission % if i were ever to sell throgh them and I was told they buy art outright and sell on... there must've been over a 1.2 million quids worth int he originals gallery alone.... thats some buying power!!

Yes I noticed how poor some of the frame jobs were (especially the Jack and Jill) Put me off ever float mounting one of my prints.

Popped along myself to both shows at the weekend and noticed the same thing. Looks like someone had framed the prints with sticky pads. God awful job. The framer should be shot - although maybe hung in the wrong enviroment! Both shows were excellent though, most I'd seen before, a few I hadn't, but couldn't believe the prices. Most on offer were apparently from the gallery owners personal collection. Lucky git!

Now I like some of Banky's work as much as the rest of you, however having gone to this show yesterday and seen the collection they had amassed it left me very underwhelmed. The imagery was on the whole pretty average, the application of the paint to the canvasses can only be described as amateur and the prices were ridiculous. To top it off the gent sat behind his desk was prattling on about on about graffiti like he had been into it from the start and understood it innately. Am I the only one to notice all these thoroughly disappointing facts or is everyone blinded by Banksy even when he crates something piss poor? And the rat stencil on the outside of the gallery just made me want to come back at night and tag the building....Please tell me I am not the only person who feels this way. Whats worth tracking down is a text which quotes Banksy before his rise where he openly speaks of how he hates the art world and everything about it (think the piece was called something like metaphysical graffiti was written about 6 years ago)....Then we see his 'art' being placed in Saachis collection and people suddenly finding graffiti is the in thing (oh but not the tagging just the pretty pictures). Sorry to rant here but for all you lot who think Banksy has a sun shining out of his bum, take a look at what he has said in the article, surely you must all think he is the biggest hypocrite with a statement like that. Of course I don't condemn him for making money from something he does, but I also heard him say he was uncomfortable with the amount of money he has, well reduce the price of the prints and make sure theres enough for everyone....and before you question I do own a few so I've not got sour grapes for not owning one

banksy is of course good in some of the pieces he does but these pieces in the gallery were a bit crap, of course i know this is my opinion, but we all have opinions and if you take a step back from the fact it was banksy, i am sure you could see what i am saying, the prices being charged there did not reflect the artistic merit. OK so if you disagree with me, why is Banky's work not crap. not an easy question to answer intelligently.
why bring it up?because this is a forum and some people might find it interesting that not everyone has their nose up Banky's bum. not aiming that at everyone on here but a lot of people do seem to have their opinions coated in a layer of sugar when it comes to banksy, or have i just made that up? has anyone else read the article i am talking about?

I really enjoyed visiting the galleries - the prints and the originals. They have some pieces from the late 90s and early 00s which I wasn't too keen on though - bit too much going on.

The prices were crazy but it didn't really bother me. Seeing Banksy's work outside always amazes me so I only find it sad when these are sold on.

Speaking of the rat stencil, anyone know how it got there? They had a stencil on display (not for sale) but I seem to remember it was a different design.

Now we know why Banksy holds his exhibitions in War zones or with Animals as he feels the images are not strong enough to be exhibited in such a bland way.

The andipa show is not an official banksy show, you know that right? there is nothing new painted for that show. I just want to clear that up as your post kind of comes across as if it's an official show with new work.

I'm not sure banksy can control his prices, the 2ndry market has done that. But one thing I detect from the man is that however much he makes I feel he will be putting alot back in the form of charity and good causes.

Why is banksy so good? Well you're here because of him..

yes fully aware the show was put together by the gallery and had no input from banksy in terms of pieces submitted or any kind of curation apart from the fact he was the artist who had made the work.
thanks saltandiron - someone with a realistic view of the show. yes banksy has no control of the spiralling selling price, however he does have the ability to devalue works by releasing massive editions, i mean i have often wondered how the price of his work would fall and be overtaken by its artistic value if forinstance he was busted as a pedo. glad to hear banksy will be putting a lot back into charity work, so essentially he wants to make a lot of money?

Im sure I have read an article where Banksy talks about gallery / auction house interest in his work and he generally finds the whole thing uneasy, distasteful and uninteresting. He has also pointed out in the past that he makes no money from these sales.

Banksy isnt the greatest ever artist to grace England, but I dont think he has ever claimed to be. What he has done (right or wrong) is help bring street art and graff to a mainstream audience.

But he hasnt done it overnight and he hasnt done it on his own.

You could say that is this acceptance that is infact killing it off, but you cant blame Banksy for that.

On the other hand, mainstream interest means that artist who would never get the respect the deserve can now feel free to work and maybe make a decent penny out of it.

As I understand it he does make money from these sales with artist resale rights (as long as he collects it, which you'd assume he would).
