Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by danvnuk on Mar 19, 2008 16:32:15 GMT 1, I found the Andipa Original show a bit flat too - (I enjoyed the print show much more, strangely enough)
I think this has probably to do with the fact that the originals, taken out of context on the street, without the witty placement and that feeling that you've stumbled across something a bit special - lose most of their magic.
The prints - well - they were designed to be hung on a wall indoors - the scale and the context feels right.
There's also the fact that the street pieces Andipa had amassed just weren't that good to be honest.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by thinkbank on Mar 19, 2008 16:37:08 GMT 1, I didnt know that about artist resale fees? I was referring to pieces when he has been comissioned (back in the day, you could get a Banksy canvass for 500 quid!) and the people selling them on these days for profit.
At the end of the day, he does a fair bit for chairty, is socially aware and he built up his reputation over a long, long period. It hasnt happened overnight.
When you think the obscene amounts of money footballers make - who could deny Banksy - good luck to him.
*****
also, whats the deal with the street pieces there? are they borrowed off people? Arent street pieces generally sprayed onto what is in most cases private or council property?
Are they then displaying potentially stolen property?

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by J-1 on Mar 19, 2008 17:35:55 GMT 1, Intersting views. Let me add my 2 cent. I love he way Banksy has marketed himself as an artist. His USP of being elusive is great and has never been done to this scale. He is a guy that has grinded so hard all these years that its only right he deserves all thats coming his way. And YES he's a walking contradiction but who isn't in this life we live. That's part of wat makes us complex individuals.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by stickitup on Mar 19, 2008 18:39:32 GMT 1, i'd do a fair bit for charity if i had money enough to spend £20,000 on a statue i was going to leave in the street. his popularity since saachi got hold of some of his works did launch him into the suddenly unafordable - in fiact you could argue out of reach of the people he was trying to access with the genuine work he left on the street.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by slowmo on Mar 19, 2008 18:49:36 GMT 1, Large editions, there were 1,400 trolleys (900 signed) released and 650 grannies (150 signed), so he has doubled the release size of his LA images,
As the signed are the one's that have the most value, I would say he is trying to devalue through massive releases, but it isn't working.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by veralynn on Mar 19, 2008 18:50:42 GMT 1, My two penneth is that Banksy is the leader of this movement - whether you think he has talent as an artist is an opinion, I think he has but I'm just not into stencils per se.
I'm an admirer of Ian Francis and Adam Neate. You can't dismiss that Banksy's anonimity has championed his cause and propelled him into super stardom.
Poor spelling and grammar pisses me off as well but so does intelletual snobbery.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by colonelkurtz on Mar 19, 2008 19:10:05 GMT 1, I think it's Banksy's execution that stickitup has been disappointed by.
Canvas which are selling for 50k plus would normally be crafted by a master painter. Banksy's early gallery/for sale work isn't really that, more of a transition from street to gallery. Bit rough.
But you'd still love to have it on your wall. Which is the whole point... of mine.. to make..aahhh, desire, lust, EVILLLLL (IMHO ) Sorry, sorry,
P.S I have spell checked my post. Thank you.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by thinkbank on Mar 19, 2008 19:13:04 GMT 1, I think the LA shows, international stunts and peoples fascination with his him as a person, are what have propelled Banksy into the big league.
Thats down to a creative mind and some clever marketing. Whatever the case, even the most optmistic Banksy fan could not have predicted how things have turned out.
He's been bombing the streets for years and its quite literally started to pay off.
Like most people, be it rock stars, actors etc, it seems that anyone with left wing, working class leanings who ends up earning a few quid get accused of being a 'sell out'.
You cant deny Banksy his success and the money that comes with it. He appears to do alot more work for charity than people in more privileged positions than himself do.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by blacksy on Mar 20, 2008 0:34:56 GMT 1, To be honest, i found the Andipa show almost desperate. The guy put a show on there last year, and it was incredible, for alot of us it was the first time we got to see a decent collection of Banksy's work under one roof. To then buy the book aswell left us all feeling like we'd seen something, and had a souvenier of the occasion, whereas this time, its like going to see your old favourite band reunite - the material was there, but there was no wow factor, nothing you hadnt seen before, or read about, or seen on here, ok so the huge bombing middle england was exceptional, it was nice to see some rats sprayed on various objects, walls, wood, and tin boxes, but they dont raise a smile like they did 3 years ago when you'd walk past one in the street and just chuckle to yourself. Nowadays you're stood in a room, with lots of people wearing funny clothes, all telling their unimpressed girlfriends all these quirky little facts about Banksy, as though everyone in there knows something about him that someone else doesnt.
As for Mr Andipa - i wholeheartedly agree, he's acting like he's straight out of compton - or should that be straight out of west brompton!
This is in no way a bad reflection on Banksy's work - as i'm sure he would be unimpressed with the show - he'd more than likely be impressed at the interest in his work, sick at the prices Andipa's charging, and lets face it - for those people that can afford to buy at that price - they have nothing in common with Banksy.
its like going to see the sex pistols, and standing next to a mum, dad, and 3 year old twin girls - it just don't seem right!

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by Coach on Mar 20, 2008 1:03:46 GMT 1, i'll let you know what i think after i've been, next week - taking the kids. their views are always refreshing. mr b cannot be criticized in any way re this show as it's indipendent of him. he cant be criticized for the price of his work on the secondary market - that is not dictated by him. as for the price of his prints, i think they are cheap in view of the demand. most busineses charge market rate for their product. pow have always charged way way less than they could for banksy prints, and could charge a lot more and still sell out imediately. what do i like about mr b? the quality of his stenciling, the homour, the message, the antics, the path i've been led on to other great artists, the breath of fresh air...... the list goes on. as i said tho' not been to this collection yet, but look forward to it.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by nattymatt on Mar 20, 2008 5:38:31 GMT 1, Just reading this post and i'd like to stick my oar in about Andipa Mr Andipa doesn't know his ass from his elbow when it comes to Banksy. I approached him about selling/showing my original canvas at his first show last year at the same gallery in Knightsbridge. I mentioned that the piece i own was in his first book..."banging your head against a brick wall"......... Mr Andipa didn't know what book i was talking about....i couldn't believe it. He has jumped on the Artist because he can make money from his art..... He has a gallery.....its a business. I'm sure he love Banksys work like all of us but if he knew who or what the "next big thing" was, his gallery would be full of that...... and i have to agree the "wow" factor with this old stuff is not like it was before when you came across a new piece on the street. However when i do see a new piece, either on the street or on his web site, its brilliant....

That's exactly why I like his newer work like S&S and Tesco Generation so much. It shows definite progression.

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by ABC on Mar 20, 2008 15:07:36 GMT 1, I don't think anyone can argue that Banksy is a talented fine artist but thats not what art is about, you don't have to be as technical with a brush as with the likes of Conor H for instance, It's about the "idea" Take a look at Tracey Emin, Crap IMO but the establishment love her, why? because she is different to the norm.
I actually prefer his prints on my walls rather than his originals, more than likely the reason I never bought more back in the early days. As for the Rat outside, not sure he did it, why promote a show thats not his?

Banksy • Andipa Gallery, by funyoung on Mar 20, 2008 21:30:00 GMT 1, I also found the Andipa 'show' underwhelming.
Firstly I found it a bit much with all the prints / originals so close together. Ne time to appreciate one without another being in your peripheral vision. Secondly the older originals are very raw with an almost 'slapdash' approach owing to the fact that they were done for humour or whathaveyou rather than to be sold for 50,000 in a gallery. Seemed a bit out of keeping and would have looked better in their natural environment. Thirdly - where does Andipa get these framed? The prints had marks from the hanging with small squares in each of the four corners as if they had been stuck in the frame with blu-tack.
But. His sharks/shopping trolley canvas was amazing and that lone was worth the visit for me.

I popped into Andipa yesterday and bought a couple of the Banksy exhibition catalogues - one for me, and a spare. I figure one of you chaps would like one, but not be able to make it down.
PM me if you'd like it at cost price. It was 15 squid... but I'd perfer pounds sterling.
