JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by keysersoze on Feb 23, 2009 19:19:22 GMT 1, Aside from that water colour at Bonhams, I believe this is the first true Jose Parla original to come up at auction:
JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by slowmo on Feb 23, 2009 20:08:21 GMT 1, I've been waiting for a herakut and a Parla to turn up at auction, I will be very interested in the results.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by beasty on Feb 23, 2009 20:09:23 GMT 1, It looks like a low estimate but who knows? It's an early work, from 2000 according to Cityscapes. Looks like the decsription has the wrong size though( should be 6'x4'). A good example of his early work and will be intereseting to see how it does at auction.
Does anyone know the date of Jose's first gallery work? The earliest paintings I've seen in his catalogues date from 2000.

If this sells within the estimate I'll be surprised. Definitely good times for collectors.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by lee3 on Feb 23, 2009 21:49:48 GMT 1, It used to be one could make a good guess months before an auction if you knew something was coming up. The way the international markets are imploding with each day (today is no different) makes guessing much more difficult than it has ever been. If it goes to a private collector, my guess is $50k. If it goes to a dealer, the sky is the limit.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by beasty on Feb 23, 2009 22:06:09 GMT 1, Given that this is the Jose's first major auction house appearance and a Contemporary auction rather than an Urban/Street one, combined with the prices primary dealers are currently asking I'm guessing this will go way north of the high estimate.
It just strikes me as a very strange estimate. Anyone who has done their homework will know the score and realise that even though times are tough this is an important auction for Parla and there will be forces at work to make sure it goes well!

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by lee3 on Feb 23, 2009 22:12:07 GMT 1, >>>It just strikes me as a very strange estimate<<<
The auction houses only care about making sure there is a sale. They can strong arm any seller into taking a low ball/teaser estimate or take a hike. They are very convincing with their argument that a lower estimate encourages more and more bidders which ultimately drives prices higher. Personally, I don't buy it, but I can apprecaite why they say as much.
Compound this problem with prices that seem to be falling out of bed with each passing week and the houses are doing everything in their power to insure a sale. Given Parla's lack of auction history, that estimate makes sense to me. Of course it will sell, and when it goes for higher than the top range, well then a nice buzz begins regarding an artist that most have never heard of. Most importantly to Sotheby's, a sale is made. I would do the same if I were in their shoes.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by Cocteau 101 on Feb 23, 2009 22:13:06 GMT 1, The fact it is in a contemporary auction in New York is also important. Not to hype the guy but this could be the start of a meteoric rise in Parlas standing in the contemporary art world. His last show was at a well respected New York gallery that is very highly thought of in contemporary circles, he has served his apprenticeship in contemporary terms and this could be the beginning of another breakthrough in his career.

They are fantastic people that I highly recommend, but your statement about Grajales Gallery just really isn't accurate and is a bit hype. They are well respected, but contemporary art is not their forte. Design, most definitely.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by beasty on Feb 23, 2009 22:26:55 GMT 1, Lee - I don't have any experience of the auction houses but I'm with you in that I don't buy their reasons behind setting a low estimate. It will probably go for a lot more and maybe generate a bit of a buzz but do you think it will spark an interest in Parla's work outside his current collector base? I could imagine this happening last year when speculation was rampant in the market but it seems like things have dropped off significantly in that area for obvious reasons.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by Cocteau 101 on Feb 23, 2009 22:28:45 GMT 1, Mose, yeh I know they are mainly known for design but Christina Grajales is hugely respected in contemporary circles and has been a bastion of the design scene for years. To be honest I don't think any hype is required, in the long term the guys art will do the talking.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by lee3 on Feb 23, 2009 22:30:41 GMT 1, Beasty:
I DO agree with Sotheby's on this one in that they have low estimates for everyone across the board in that sale. I saw only 3 or 4 estimates north of $50k though the sale includes the likes of DeKooning, Cornell, and Calder. It's a on odd month to have sale which i suspect also contributes to the teaser ranges. We should all get used to them.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by keysersoze on Feb 23, 2009 22:35:18 GMT 1, beasty - I just think it is a safe move on Sotheby's part. First 'real' Parla original at auction, crappy economies everywhere, and a realtively early work of his (this is from well before he started showing at Elms and Il Trifoglio, right?). Better to have something that beats estimates and can be used as good PR, than having an unsold lot.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by beasty on Feb 23, 2009 22:51:31 GMT 1, Keyersoze - absolutely agree it's a safe move on Sotheby's part as I'm sure that if things don't go well at the outset then you may see the primary dealers step in with bids.
Hopefully the work will sell itself though as it is a good example of his early stuff.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by beasty on Feb 23, 2009 22:54:05 GMT 1, Market rate was about 35 -40K UKP for a 4'x 6'early last year. I'm not sure what the Elms or CG prices were but think it was alot more.

Mose, yeh I know they are mainly known for design but Christina Grajales is hugely respected in contemporary circles.
I work at a contemporary art gallery in NY and Grajales is not only NOT "hugely respected" it's practically never even mentioned in contemporary art circles. Please chill with the hype.
I was really really curious to see what the "contemporary" Sotheby's crowd would actually bid this up to but now that's not possible. My honest opinion is that it would barely hit the top estimate, maybe a little more if it's a good day. But now that it's all over the Banksy forum it's going to be hard to say as all the Parla groupies are probably creaming their pants, selling their dface prints and emptying their piggy banks. Sky's the limit here when buyers are basing prices on emotions and not on reality.

JOSE PARLA ORIGINAL AT SOTHEBY'S, by skelly on Feb 23, 2009 23:20:39 GMT 1, I would guess 40-50K on this one, the estimate is so low it is a joke in my opinion. They could still achieve a good bust of the estimate even if it was at 25-28K
