OBEY - Surfer print: J'Boy's version coming soon?, by snausages on Oct 13, 2009 1:55:36 GMT 1, If that was a criteria for greatness better erase Warhol from the history book.... and Hirst, Koons, Murakami, Prince... pretty much everyone after Jackson Pollock. If you're talking about art making vs art directing I really don't even care about that.
If you're talking about "remixing" the trite difference between those guys and Fairey is that the relationship between Faireyβs work and his sources is that, "nothing substantial has been added." Not my words as I know you guys don't care what I have to say but the fact that Milton Glaser came out to say something about Faireyβwhich is a decision I don't think he would dare take lightlyβsays mounds about the quality of the relationship between the appropriated and the appropriator.
But hey if you guys can't see the difference good on you, ignorance is bliss...

I was being sarcastic dude, I know what you are saying!
But if I were to approach Shepard Fairey's work in a critical manner I would compare it to the work of Thomas Kinkade (as I wrote earlier in this thread). The singular images that both Fairey and Kinkade create aren't particularly powerful or ingenious. What is powerful however, is the pervasiveness of each of their brands as a whole.

OBEY - Surfer print: J'Boy's version coming soon?, by bullet on Oct 13, 2009 16:35:56 GMT 1, i do care, but have a job to do.. its very easy to do yourself, it just needs attention after you have posterized then live traced the image
always convert it to grayscale as you will get more defined edges.
you then unpick it all in illustrator, smooth the egdges, add some colour and texture
sign it and sell it to idiots that will buy anything
job done.

OBEY - Surfer print: J'Boy's version coming soon?, by curiousgeorge on Oct 13, 2009 17:46:27 GMT 1, Read the last 2 posts you made jboy, then reply given that context. Planning on selling = permission needed.
Though I'm sure you would argue otherwise..
