OBEY - Surfer print: J'Boy's version coming soon?, by monkeyballs on Sept 24, 2009 22:19:24 GMT 1, 5 minute job on Illustrator guv. Nothing worse than boastful claims on the intereywinteryweb, not like the pub where you can say you heard me wrong. He's taken over three days, he can come on here and say he's been busy, but he already admitted it took 25 mins to produce something that looks nothing (yet) like a shep, again he has mugged himself off like the proverbial two bob!

OBEY - Surfer print: J'Boy's version coming soon?, by Karl Read on Sept 24, 2009 22:24:35 GMT 1, As far as I'm concerned the arguement has been lost on the "that's a 5min filter job." will be interesting to see what he comes up with but it's irelevant IMO. Unless he wants an image posted here and then does it within a certain time frame.

OBEY - Surfer print: J'Boy's version coming soon?, by elwheel on Sept 25, 2009 2:01:34 GMT 1, OK. I call bullshit on 5 minutes, 25 minutes and 5 hours 55 minutes. Its an OK print but surf prints have a long long history and there are older prints with limited pedigree that carry way more technical nous than this. It's an OK print. Sin Γ©. (Thats it - in Irish)

stupid boast admittedly but whether its true or not, you have to admit there's not a whole heap of innovation or even work gone into this print

I am fan of Shep's works, whether it takes 5 mins or 6 days not a problem for me, I appreciate the concept and execution.
Where was the boast?

OBEY - Surfer print: J'Boy's version coming soon?, by jamesreeve5 on Sept 25, 2009 16:54:52 GMT 1, If freerange produces something of comparable quality, then all the fairey bagholders get on their pulpits in a sad effort to defend their hero and the value of their personal collections. OH NOES! i'm not only scared of that, but what happens when someone imitates paintings like my Modrians that's just straight lines painted in different colors? my Modrians are going to be worthless! what if someone buys a urinal and puts it in a gallery? there goes value in my Duchampp! And if someone pulls down their light tubes and makes sculptures with them...I have to sell my Flavins now. and i can't even think about my massive Freud collection....millions of art school students are able to paint like this geezer. thank you for bringing this to my attention. i must reevaluate my collection now.
lol... already inspiring anger, and freerange hasn't even finished the work yet. Here is what's going to happen: freerange is going to create a work that is good, but not as good as the Fairey one, and because of his reputation on this forum (a reputation he created for himself), there will be a bunch of members ready to drag him through the mud.
but in response to your mean-spirited post...
3 of the 4 artists you named primarily use aesthetics as a means of achieving their ideas. It is the revolutionary changes in the way society perceives art that these works made that makes Mondrian, Flavin, and Duchamp so important.
I am not denying that Fairey will have a place in the history of art, and I do think that his works will continue to hang on individuals walls for years to come. But his career and body of work, when taken as a whole, follows more along the lines of artists like Peter Max and Thomas Kinkade, insomuch that the power of the work is dependent upon its consumption.
With this in mind then, freerange could hypothetically create a work that does in fact aesthetically rival Fairey's work, but when taken beyond a 1 to 1 aesthetic comparison, Fairey's will always be better because he is able to sell 400 prints, 20 HPMs, 6 pieces on wood, and one canvas of his image, whereas freerange will not. Like Max and Kinkade, the power of Fairey's work is directly correlational with the public's desire to consume it. It is a case of the means actually being the message.

correct. save time. As in summarize the main principles that underpin the thread and many thanks for the other offer but I must decline.
Apologies Wiz. I seem to have rattled the cage of an over zealous time management student.

The detail work that goes into Shep's originals are quite nice. Here's better pic of the original surf collage...
