I was fortunate enough to have shepard show me his office recently and he had a piece he was working on up in the computer. It was photoshop and no it wasn't a generic filter. The process was actually quite detailed. Way more than I expected it to be as a matter of fact. Made me appreciate it that much more. Many many layers of detail.

It's because he realized that he couldn't make one that compared to Fairey's, and rather than admit to this and/or show us his attempt, he's just hoping that this thread goes away.

It's too bad, although I said it was a win / win situation for us onlookers, a part of me was kind of rooting for freerange just because he seemed like the underdog in the situation.

He has a group of people on this forum who so avidly despise him it seems like every time he posts something it is met with either counter-argument or ridicule. I mean, one forum member even went so low as to post a picture of freerange on the forum that he took from the guy's myspace page so other people on the forum could laugh at it, fortunately it was taken down. I know Freerange puts his foot in his mouth ALOT, and usually ends up reaping what he sows, but it would have been nice to see the tables turn for once.

I stand by my assertion that anyone could make one of these, it would definitely take more than 5 minutes, and certainly wouldn't be as good unless you're really skilled at this kind of thing, but generally Faireys stuff is very straightforward and looks like it was just wrung through photoshop or streamline no matter what he actually does to it. This and all of his prints look flat and off because he doesn't know how to draw.

Stylistically I think this print is ok for what it is though and better than most of his prints because it isn't filled with some hypocritical message or faux revolutionary ideas, but still it's just an illustration of a wave.

But I think the problem right here is not that jboy couldn't make one but that he's just full of BS and never intended on making one anyway. He was just toying with all of you. I doubt he cares anymorea is probably laughing about it all.

Disagree, I just don't think he could make look good Enough to show. Especially in the time frame. No big deal, just a bit of fun. I just feel like I prooved my point now. i'm defensive though as I'm a big fairey fan. Just like he would be about dface.

people say stupid shite like this all the time about any number of artists. but look...who has been remotely close to producing art that looks anything as good as Fairey's in his style? Greg Gossel has Faile pretty much down. Dolk, Eelus, Nick Walker, Pobel, random Bristol geezer, et al can make something that looks like Banksy. who's the closet to imitating Fairey? why don't you make one and show us how easy it is, sausage?

He subverts and re uses old images.
(So do most artist in the scene, including banksy.)

I'm not a huge die hard Fairey fan but if you look back through his body of work there is no doubting his skills. It would be an amazing challenge for any artist to have a quality body of work to allow 3 or 4 new print releases a month and continuously sell out. I don't always agree with him but it's hard to not respect him IMO.

I mean I can understand why someone might like this print, if I was a surfer I'd think this poster was pretty cool, he did a decent job with it (except for the flattened crest of the wave.) But seriously, it's something anyone with any artistic skill could pull off.

Many do think "I could do that" but then you can say "yes... but did you?". Thats truely not directed at anyone posting I'm just saying a case should be made that Fairey is here and hes doing his thing. Whatever about the time it takes, he put that time in and no-one can take that away. The man has an output, it's marketed as art and people are willing to pay money for it, nothing to be ashamed of.

He does what he does and people buy it, so good for him. I'm just saying it's nothing that special that it can't be imitated even by the likes of jboy the difference is his success at marketing. So kudos to him on that front. But still I'm a bit dismayed (like Glaser) that such unoriginal and unimaginative work is so sought after by the masses, but I guess it's not unusual given the history of masses...
