Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by amsterdam9697 on Jun 11, 2009 2:45:38 GMT 1, Absolute madness!!! If anyone is dumb enough to buy these at anything close to 1K give me a shout. I have a bridge I would like to sell you. It's in the tiny borough of Brooklyn ;D ;D ;D
I also love how Obey is so outspoken against "flipping" to the point that they police their sales... then they turn around and flip the s**t of their prints through a "vendor." REAL class, Shep!

I'm a sometimes Shep fan and I agree 100%, I'd have passed for free too, as it's not my cup of tea at all. Regardless of the artist signing the bottom corner, whether it be Warhol, Banksy or anyone else, I've never understood why people want pictures of soup cans on the wall. In this instance, I think the colours are horrible too.

Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by goaty on Jun 11, 2009 8:11:54 GMT 1, Here's my view on Shep.
He grinds out posters on a near weekly basis, some are great a lot aren't.
With the cash from print sales it's allowed him to persue other ventures such as a clothing line.
He doesn't care what people think, enjoys himself and does what he wants and why shouldn't he.
I love Shep.

Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by origo on Jun 11, 2009 8:22:15 GMT 1, Nothing wrong with that, just donยดt slay flipping on your own site and then pull a trick like this, or deal with a shady outfit like Iconoclast.
The image is nothing close to being original and the colourway is horrible.
Supply and demand indeed, hype at itยดs finest and people are apparently prepared to pay 1K for it.
โMy prints are priced well below market value because I want them to be affordable to true fans of my art. I have no problem with people collecting my prints and selling older prints to free up funds to purchase newer prints they prefer. However, some people buy the prints just to re-sell them on Ebay immediately. I call these people "flippers" and they keep a true fan of the piece from being able to purchase it at a low price.
There are people who will cherish a reasonably priced piece of my art and they are my priority.
Sincerely, Shepard Faireyโ
Statement from Iconoclast:
โIn regards to the pricing of our editions, as we've stated, selling our editions at fair market value as well as increasing the price of an edition as it sells out is normal practice with all fine arts publishers. We have stated that we will at least start the Fairey prints at $250 (actually below market value in our opinion) but they will go up in price as the edition sells out. The reasons we sell all of our editions at market price should be obvious to you, including doing our best to compensate the artists what they deserve for their hard work and talent. In this case, selling our prints at a fair market value price also does something else. It helps place and keep the artwork in the hands of real collectors who are passionate about the art instead of eBay flippers who have done nothing to earn that profit...and ensures the artists make the money they deserve, not the flippers.โ
These guys seriously makes me sick, f**k this s**t.

Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by graffoto on Jun 11, 2009 9:16:33 GMT 1, For gods sake grow up this isn't flipping. Lots of 'fine art galleries' sell there editions this way. Counter editions, damien hirst, aperture foundation the list goes on and on. Photograpy editions in particular are often sold this way. Shep has always priced his prints on obey at well below market value so you can't knock him really - this was not sold by him
As ever if you don't like it don't buy it - someone did at even this high price so you lost nothing at least this way real fans had a choice as to whether to buy rather than mad f5 ing and it selling out in seconds..

Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by Heavyconsumer on Jun 11, 2009 9:43:30 GMT 1, I like soup cans, would eventually like to get Warhol. I'm a big fan of Pop art though
I realise a lot of you like the soup cans and I'm not knocking anyone's taste, I simply don't understand their appeal. There's a lot of art out there that I dislike, but often I can see what might draw people to some of it. OK, it's pop art! What does that mean exactly? Why was Warhol printing soup cans in the first place? What possible emotional or cognitive response could a picture of a can of soup possible evoke in someone (assuming they don't especially love or loathe that particular soup)? It's straight over my head, as is plenty of other art admittedly, but gaddamit people do love these soup cans and I'm curious as to how they became so popular. What is it about soup cans that people love?

Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by notworthit on Jun 11, 2009 10:24:09 GMT 1, I reckon this is a complete con. Since when has any shep print sold for more than $500 on the aftermarket?? There's no way on earth anyone's paid that much for this print. I reckon Iconoclast started at $250, with all he hype generated they've been able to push them to maybe 4-500 until they sell out, but then keep bumping the price on the website so it looks like there's a mad demand and as a result, the next release is a guaranteed sell-out.

Andy wanted to paint something that was 'nothing', but intrinisically Art is about finding your own meaning in a piece ..i like to think they represent how an everyday object can become something special, it holds as reminder that you can find beauty all around you if you look hard enough

i think you'd be suprised - someone earlier in this thread said they sold a soup can I for $1700. People will pay over they odds if they want something badly enough and Shep is 'hot' right now and this image is his take on an iconic image - demand was obviously high.
people will pay what they are willing to pay - if some of the $250 one appear on the bay we'll see but i'd be suprised if it goes for $500

I'm not saying this image is worth $2750 - mad! but I think has gone beyond the urban art scene now he's represented by a grown up gallery now and everything -

we don't but it is probably something like that although its quite likely that there was only one as $2750 and the higher prices.
Counter editions don't tell you either it is annoying but as discussed it makes that purchase more urgent when the price does go up - look at the thread for the sam taylor wood print - which is still available at 900 pounds - but in that case the price stayed the same for weeks - as it did for soup can I - i'm sure that iconoclast didn't expect this to sell out this quickly....
as it di the sudden price rises seemed more drastic - if it had taken a week or a month to sell out there would be far less complaints....

Maybe.
However, I know that the owners of the original soup can print were given the offer to buy the other three colorways up front with the guarantee that they could match the numbers. The price was higher than the $250 mark to do this, but I'm not sure what the price point was.
The pool available to the public wasn't 200 to start with.

It's not a con. It's the way it works for this print house as well as many other online and brick and mortar galleries. Many of Shep's prints sell for considerably more than $500 on the aftermarket. Do even the smallest bit of research and you'll discover that.

FilipinoBoxSpringHog is right.
Here is the question I'm dying to ask so many of you - why is there so much focus on I bought at $X but since some bought at $Y I feel better? Shouldn't it be about wanting the work and thinking you got it for a price you are willing to pay and are happy to add it to your collection? I think selling prints this way is a good way to attempt to deter flippers.
And I can't believe there has been no mention of Deitch Projects yet in this thread - Shep is in the big leagues now!

Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by snausages on Jun 11, 2009 15:54:52 GMT 1, just donยดt... ...deal with a shady outfit like Iconoclast.
Can you explain why you think Iconoclast is a shady outfit?
I really hope you're not throwing around defamatory remarks because they employ a tiered pricing structure. I mean if they're shady because you have proof that they rip people off or something then let's hear it but if you're calling them shady due to the stepped pricing, then you really need to grow up.
Iconoclast is responsible for curating and producing one of the most important Exhibitions of our generation. They continue to curate, write about, promote, and produce works by young, exciting promising artists. I don't know them personally, but I'd bet they put a lot of blood sweat and tears went into making these exhibitions happen and (I may be wrong but) I doubt they do it for the fancy cars and condos.
If you don't like tiered pricing structures then whine and b**ch about thatโhell, I don't like it either. But no one is forcing anyone to buy this s**t and calling Iconoclast 'shady' because you don't like the price is what is really 'bulls**t.'
just donยดt... ...deal with a shady outfit like Iconoclast. Shepard Fairey - Soup Can II, by junta on Jun 11, 2009 15:55:57 GMT 1, Absolute madness!!! If anyone is dumb enough to buy these at anything close to 1K give me a shout. I have a bridge I would like to sell you. It's in the tiny borough of Brooklyn ;D ;D ;D I also love how Obey is so outspoken against "flipping" to the point that they police their sales... then they turn around and flip the s**t of their prints through a "vendor." REAL class, Shep!
id agree, but theres that niggling voice in my head that says hes trying to cope with the insane demand for his stuff and stop others profiting off his back. sheps always at home in the legal and moral grey areas i suppose!

They aren't "flipping" these prints. These prints would not have been created if it wasn't for Iconoclast. The first image was released though Iconoclast as part of the Beautiful losers exhibitions as well as many other artists. This print would closer go into the category of his "fine art" prints which 4-5 are released a year and not the standard 18x24 print release though ObeyGiant.com.
Now if every other Obey print was released like that you have an argument but they are not, so you don't. Iconoclast approached Shepard about doing a release this way, Shepard is aware of how they do business (much like many of print houses) and allowed them the image to sell. He still offers prints off his site for wayyyyy below market so people have a chance at getting some affordable work from him. To me it sounds like what you are saying is that ALL his print releases must adhere to this method or he is a hypocrite, I mean really!?!
