Richard Hambleton 🇨🇦 Artist Discussion , by irl1 on Aug 20, 2018 19:54:38 GMT 1, The first Richard Hambleton Exhibition since his death.
Leake Street Arches, in September, London. (would love to get over for this )
On October 29th of last year, just a few weeks after he saw director Oren Jacoby’s final cut of the documentary about his career, the 65-year-old Hambleton passed away in unconfirmed circumstances in a downtown Manhattan apartment, accompanied by a female friend.
Now, the first major exhibition of the artist’s work since his death is scheduled for September, opening at Leake Street Arches before moving to Maddox Gallery, and coinciding with the U.K. release of Jacoby’s film.

I like his work though I know the feeling, i jumped ship on a few of his over the years. The last 12 months his work is gone sky high.

Very little out there to know if these are worth it or not. Steady rise in prices over the last 12 months. I see his work only going one way, up. His first exhibition since his death is starting this month and will be in Maddox Gallery. If you really look around the galleries and auctions (be careful in some of those small auctions in the U.S as there is a few copies of his work going around over there) you might just get an original for the higher end of those print prices.
IMO His work is well in at the prices now as there are a lot of new collectors looking for his work.

“There is no Richard Hambleton Foundation set up yet. We make no comment on the “newer” reproductions offered through Maddox Gallery.”
Agree with what others have already said; if you’re in the market for something, do your homework! Some lovely shadowhead portraits (OG’s) still available.

We where able to acquire a 1999 Original Acrylic on Board from a Major Local Collector before he passed away.
One of those gems within our collection that gets missed, because simply, we have so much....

Richard Hambleton 🇨🇦 Artist Discussion , by nighthawk on Sept 3, 2018 18:18:53 GMT 1, ACA Galleries in NYC actually opened a show a few months ago:
www.acagalleries.com/the-incredible-story-behind-richard-hambleton-the-godfather-of-street-art/
Regardless, I'm sure this show will also be great!
I'll reiterate for anyone in the market for a Shadowman piece - get in touch with the Woodwards (art@woodwardgallery.net) in NYC! They cared for the man for two decades, and are the foremost experts with regards to his works.

Richard Hambleton 🇨🇦 Artist Discussion , by shy on Sept 4, 2018 11:52:26 GMT 1, I had originally spoke to Woodwards while Hambleton was alive , but i didn't buy as the salesman was relentless. It made me feel like this was a penny stock scam. He kept saying I will make money as Hambleton was in bad health etc.... I wasn't sure if this was legit at the time. Now I wish I had purchased as prices have gone up considerably

I think were going to see this mans work get much much more expensive in the next few years. There are young collectors out there only finding him since he died. When an artist gets trendy they all want him/her.

Richard Hambleton 🇨🇦 Artist Discussion , by Hairbland on Sept 4, 2018 13:42:49 GMT 1, There is an inexpensive book the ACA gallery had, out of print I believe, Printed Matter had 2 copies buried I bought one. Nightlife / Shadow Paintings 1981-1989 by Richard Hambleton, text and photos by Franc Palaia. He hung with Richard and photo'd many of his street paintings as completed.
Most of the ACA paintings were post-2000.

I regret not buying a really special canvas from him which was a portrait of J-M Basquiat. Really stupid, but then we all make dumb mistakes that we regret. Like my ex-wife!

Richard Hambleton 🇨🇦 Artist Discussion , by Michael James Art on Sept 30, 2018 0:11:22 GMT 1, Richard Hambleton along with Basquiate and Haring were the Kings of the street and urban art scene in NYC in the 1980’s. Much of today’s work by Banksy and Blek Le Rat can arguably be traced back to Hambleton’s “mass murder” and more importantly the “shadowman” works he did during the 80’s and many artists acknowledge his influence on their art today. And his auction prices have skyrocketed since his death. I see in the “Street Art and Urban Artists” subsection he is not listed there, but Haring and Warhol are. Why is that? Back in the day, he was getting more media coverage than the others, but since he did not play the “gallery game” and also from drug abuse he was much more aloof than the others so not as well represented in the traditional art circles.. i mean, look at his work! It’s exciting and kinetic, and mark my words, we will be hearing much more about him in the near future! He should be added.
thanks!
