Richard Hambleton π¨π¦ Artist Discussion , by Wearology on Oct 2, 2009 14:05:46 GMT 1, The 80's were a time when the street art movement was just getting its sea legs. Basquit , Haring , Warhol , Hamilton were the names that stood out - but there was a whole subculture of taggers that were canvasing NYC like locusts. Fab Five Freddy , LA2 and the likes were courted by the older more established artists looking for street cred. I have the distinct pleasure of being friends with some of these early pioneers and with Silky's permission we are in the process of setting up a Q & A with one of the legends of the New York Street Movement from the 80's. LA2 also known as Keith Haring's silent partner will address the forum early next week and you can feel free to ask him any questions about the past, present, and future. Angel Ortiz is his name but LA2 is how he is known around the world. At age 13 he hung out with Warhol, Basquit, Hamilton, Grace Jones, Madonna, Scharf and LA2 loves to talk and we have an exclusive opportunity to fire away. It is not often that our forum gets a chance to meet an artist that has his work hanging in the Guggenheim. Thanks Silky for the permission and I look forward to hearing back from our community. I will post the exact day and time by Monday. Thank you - Wearology

Richard Hambleton π¨π¦ Artist Discussion , by Simococo on Oct 2, 2009 16:58:47 GMT 1, Thanks, think his profile might be on the up again judging by the amount of chatter I've been hearing/reading! I met him a few years ago in New York... He's been working hard for years... People should definitely check him out... John Fekner too, he's probably the biggest pioneer of street art! www.johnfekner.com/
great info remi this lad was going space invaders way before invader

Richard Hambleton π¨π¦ Artist Discussion , by chiefhk on Oct 2, 2009 21:55:20 GMT 1, I wrote about him a year or so ago on the forum so you can probably dig it up from a search. I met him last year at Woodward Gallery in the East Village, a really nice bloke though obviously he's done far too many drugs for his own good. I bought an amazing 80's work on paper of a splatterd man, if you look at the Banksy of the dog shaking water from his fur it's clearly very heavily influenced by this period in Hambleton's work. considering you can buy an original 80's piece for under $3,000 he's a great buy.
I assume you purchased the piece from Woodward Gallery? Guess I'll need to start reaching out to them!

Richard Hambleton π¨π¦ Artist Discussion , by Pattycakes on Apr 26, 2017 13:36:32 GMT 1, I met him about 10 years ago, a very interesting man indeed. I regret not buying a really special canvas from him which was a portrait of J-M Basquiat. Really stupid, but then we all make dumb mistakes that we regret.

Richard Hambleton π¨π¦ Artist Discussion , by Wearology on Oct 31, 2017 0:06:34 GMT 1, Before there was a Banksy - there was an amazing legendary street artist named Richard Hambleton. Hambleton created characters that would appear out of the corners of the streets in NYC back in the 80's. Unfortunately, he passed away today and the Urban Art Movement lost a true pioneer. On behalf of the UAA Community - I would like to send our condolences to his friends, family and fans all over the world.
This is how artsy described him: Richard Hambleton is a contemporary American-Canadian graffiti artist, sometimes called the βgodfather of street art.β Along with his contemporaries Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hambleton painted directly on the streets of New York and achieved success during the art boom of the 1980s.

Richard Hambleton π¨π¦ Artist Discussion , by Vroom & Varossieau on Nov 30, 2017 11:10:49 GMT 1, We are presenting some very nice early works on Art Miami next week. We were planning a show with him and a new 8ft Stop sign for the fair. Unfortunately he passed. Richard was an amazing artist! And a huge inspiration for most great Street Artists. It was amazing to have worked with him, although it was for a very short period. But we did get SΓΈren SolkΓ¦r to portrait him for his Surface project.
