Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by Howard Johnson on Jul 17, 2018 1:21:13 GMT 1, Kind of surprised people still think he puts out good art. Kind if repetitive no? See other artists get much more grief for what people deem as repetitive.
As a painter I think he's one of the best from the current urban movement. I see him as a Cy twombly-type figure, his works are bristling with energy and while his style may seem repetitive, he's got enough variation to keep it progressive and interesting (IMHO), and moves the art of calligraphy forward in real fantastic ways. Have you seen his works in person? They are emotionally captivating in a way that I rarely find in abstract works to be.
Man I wish he would keep it together though! I may be biased because I'm from LA and see his street works everyday, but I think he's one of the best out there, but his reputation is toxic. And not in a badass way (ie banksy), as his newsworthy moments always seem to be in poor taste, and sometimes straight up criminal in the worst way possible.
I'll continue to root for retna, but his behavior makes it harder and harder to own his work.

Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by wottagunn on Jul 17, 2018 1:41:17 GMT 1, apologies to derail slightly, but any fans of Retna or calligraphy in general should check out Melbourne artist Mayonaize. Pretty unique style and might appeal to some folk here. He's also a tattoo artist.

Oh I see this argument and I think it's actually a pretty good one. I'm still on the fence personally for now though.
It's seems like the monetary momentum around his work right now is driving a lot of his popularity though. Kind of like when whatson was super hot and doing the same tagging theme for the 88th time. (note: whatsons blip was smaller in scale bit so we're his prices).
Will be interesting to see how history treats him. That's everything personal aside and left for another debate.

Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by nighthawk on Jul 17, 2018 2:03:44 GMT 1, While Mayonnaize is no doubt talented (as many others are), Howard Johnson summed it up nicely: Retna is the best in his field! He doesn't have to be a choir boy, but it's a shame that he acts the way he does, (for many reasons) as from strictly an art perspective, you have to think that it's only going to continue to "hurt" his brand.

Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by moron on Jul 17, 2018 22:49:51 GMT 1, I think Retna gets a pass for three reasons.
One is that some people view him as some sort of modern day Basquiat, a troubled artist, making basic art with a drug problem.
Two that Retna is saleable at the moment to wealthy investors dues to people backing him financially and he also posts lots of those lifestyle instagram photos, celebs and glasses of booze and flash motors, big tits money bling bling and cars. So I would guess he sells some of his art to wealthy music hip hop etc types.
Three that Retna is not a white guy, and people give him a pass because they believe it's a given that ethnic minorities can be more mysoginst towards women and more agressive regarding some backgrounds and types of music etc they work with. (which is racist in istelf) Personally I don't believe any ethnicity or background should get a pass or less or more frowned upon because of their culture or status or skin colour.
If Retna was white and beat up an ethnic minority girlfriend then i'm sure far more people would have distanced themselves from him.
In reality it seems that Retna is just a nasty piece of work making some art which is simple enough and being promoted by high end galleries to wealthy investors who are clueless about art and about long term investment in art.
Here is some info.
It looks like he has a long history of violence.

For some reason, your third point seems racist in itself, because the hypothesis seems to come from your own belief, rather than evidence? Of course I'm not calling you a racist, but the hypothesis seems arbitrary and circular.
It's definitely a troubling past and the guy is clearly abnormal. I noticed in a couple IG posts that the exgirlfriend left positive comments in the last month on his posts. Maybe that's a fake account, or perhaps the ex has forgiven him.

Yes it's a hypothesis and I do believe some people make excuses for some peoples bad behaviour because as we have all been told a million times, by black lives matter etc etc etc. Bad behaviour it's all the fault of white privelidge.
I also know that Retna is mainly hype and promotion by dealers and galleries who have lists of very wealthy clients, so his art is predictable and safe for them to buy. The buyers think the squiggles are some form of high understanding and spritual consciousness emerging from the hands of a superier intellect blah blah blah.
Personally I would rather buy art and support artists like Tommy the Animator, who can paint and sculpt and is one of the good guys. In reality I think Tommy is more talented than Retna.

I do like Tommy's work as well. I agree with you that he's a talent.
I also like RETNAs work a lot. You mentioned that retnas a predictable and safe buy. Is he a safe choice even if he represents domestic violence? And which galleries are hyping him? He seems to be represented by Maddox, who I don't see as a large or influential gallery, given the artists on their books.

It's not about the size of the gallery it's about the galleries client list.
I think Retna has a good agent in the same way that Brainwash has an agent who enables him to move in some celebrity circles.

Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by Howard Johnson on Jul 18, 2018 1:48:35 GMT 1, Also it should be noted that Retna is not the "celebrity" artist he clearly aspires to be. I have a good friend who works with some of the best art collections in Los Angeles, and according to him the only urban artists that have really been accepted by the elite collectors are Banksy and Kaws. He said that retna does pop up in some collections, but they tend to be lower end.
Hes certainly proud of the celebrities that collect him (how many Usher IG posts do we need?) but I think because of his constant name dropping he is portrayed as more popular with the upper-crust then he actually is. That does kinda make me wonder about these crazy expensive prints hes producing, and if they will ever appreciate significantly in value.
Personally I think Retna is just as, if not more, of a talented painter then kaws. Banksy is his own beast so they cant really be directly compared. He clearly wants to break that glass ceiling, but I think his antics hurt more then they help. The dude does a lot of great stuff, especially his work trying to get local kids interested in the arts. All of that is overshadowed by his controversial actions. Maybe a good manager is key; keep him contained, stop the invite-only-weird-in-person way he sells his art, and strictly manage his output. There is still time to course correct if he really wants to be a blue-chip artist, but it would take a number of character changes I dont think hes willing to make.
Either way, I will probably continue to support him and his art, even if I cant afford it lol.

Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by kharupt on Jul 18, 2018 3:45:43 GMT 1, Glad this thread is back on track with Retna being an asshole. Other calligraphers I'd put above Retna would be Jose Parla, Cryptik and Porkras Lampas.

Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by brycepen on Jul 19, 2018 4:16:57 GMT 1, Retna is one of those artists that managed to achieve fame and fortune despite the fact that all of his art is different variations of the same exact script. When it was still a novel concept, it was eye catching and refreshing. But after awhile itโs like an overplayed pop song. It feels tired and overrated. It doesnt help that the money and fame seem to have made him overly cocky about his creative abilities. Heโs not even trying to evolve.
He clearly has a creative mind, but what is creative genius without discipline and growth?

Retna ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti Art โข New Print Release, by Dojo the Dog on Jul 19, 2018 15:27:21 GMT 1, Kind of surprised people still think he puts out good art. Kind if repetitive no? See other artists get much more grief for what people deem as repetitive. Bipolar disorder aside, I think his work stays fresh for some reason. He uses different color schemes and alternate ways of presenting his personal language that he created. I was always drawn to Egyptian hieroglyphics when I was younger so maybe thats why it resonates with me. There's a clean elegance to the calligraphy that's usually there. Even though I have no idea what it says, that ambiguity works especially since he barely makes sense when he's writing in English. When you compare his work to Cripta Djan, you can see how generally each RETNA work feels different, while Cripta Djans looks identical to each other and messy. P.S. Max is an intelligent, handsome man. Yes have to agree with some of what you are saying there his recent works do look very similar. His earlier insta post's showed a different style or more detailed types of work which i was hoping to see at the exhibit. I do really like the works on display but was expecting more variety in the pieces like the ones he has done for other exhibits in the past. Maybe that's still to come. Look forward to seeing what direction he goes in. SaveSave

Buy yes agreed, lots of good people working in the field. IMHO Parla is the only one who maybe comes close to Retna's talent, but I see him as more abstract then strait calligraphy.
