Art Wanted, by pelle on Oct 28, 2013 11:09:13 GMT 1, Too busy trolling to check the structure of your sentences? Wow you really know when this idiot starts using the red writing again in his replies that you're in trouble!! Are you a teacher wannabe or something ? br] Maybe you should just keep out of this unlessyou have something constructive to add. It speaks volumes that you've actually had nothing to say about the WCP prints at all and that this is your first post on this thread.
Just thought it was funny that you would make a mistake like that in a post where you deride someone else for making a mistake.
Regarding the fake prints from WCP, I have already said what I have to say about those on a previous thread.

Art Wanted, by Deleted on Oct 28, 2013 11:19:43 GMT 1, Well then you're very easily amused aren't you?
It's a little bit lame to say that you've made your point clear in a previous thread about this so you don't actually need to say anything of any substance now. I'm not sure how in your mind that justifies you coming on here now now just purely to troll and add nothing to the discussion. What a strange logic but it takes all sorts I suppose.
I guess maybe you just wanted to get your red pen out again.

Art Wanted, by randomname on Oct 28, 2013 16:02:52 GMT 1, What makes you so sure? Before his site was dedicated to Better Out Than In, his "store" has a handful of images free for people to download for their own personal use. His one condition was that you not print them out and sell them for profit. So I think it's safe to say he does have a problem with people selling copies. So the story gos he used to be a bootlegger him self so I don't see him making too much fuss..... These are not for me I'm saving my money to get the wife a Gucci hand bag from the market. Where did this story come from?

A lot of people who know him (or seem to) aren't exactly his biggest fans.
But if true, that would make him a bit hypocritical, more so than prove he doesn't care. His online "store" was a response to bootleggers selling fakes. He wanted to give fans a way to own a piece of his art without paying someone to rip it off.
Like I said before, he specifically said the one thing you couldn't do with he files is make fakes and sell them on ebay. Which would be an odd thing to say if you don't care.

Quote from guardian story :
Does he mind being ripped off ? "No," he says "The thing is I was a bootlegger for three years so I don't really have a leg to stand on".
Well I guess the whole story could be made up but it does seem to go against what some people here are saying.

"No," he says "The thing is I was a bootlegger for three years so I don't really have a leg to stand on". Well I guess the whole story could be made up but it does seem to go against what some people here are saying. It could be made up, or it could be true. Either way, it doesn't change that he tried to fight bootleggers in his own way. He posted high-res files for people to download and print for their own personal use with the one caveat not to print and sell them for profit. In my opinion, that's not the action of someone who doesn't care if his work is reproduced and sold without his permission.
On the other hand, if someone were intent on justifying the very thing Banksy was trying to fight, I suppose they would simply ignore that even when it has been pointed out repeatedly.

I don't think he's fighting bootleggers he just wants them to make there own copy's and not use the ones on his site.

So you think he's fine with people copying his original artwork and selling it for a profit. But he has a problem with people using his files to do it. I'm not really seeing any logic in that argument.
I would say his stance is more along the lines of he wants his art to be free to the masses. And if some douche bag sells fake art for a profit, people are being ripped off.

On the other a friend was selling something from a well known English artist on an auction site a few years ago that his people did not agree with and had some pretty heavy threats from his legal people.

But seriously, all your doing however you dress it up, is advocating the production of fakes, to line the pocket of a talentless hack, who's pretending to make limited editions based on someone else's skills. It doesn't matter if Banksy's mum was the chief operating officer of pirate videos uk, you're still advocating giving money to someone who's imparted no worth into the artistic process for their own benefit.
You fine with that? Yes? Good, but know that says as much about you as it does about WCP.

Art Wanted, by street4RT on Oct 29, 2013 15:44:58 GMT 1, Although I can certainly see the reasons as to why people may want to buy this (affordability) .... it is pretty much the same as downloading illegal MP3s .... or using counterfeit software .....
I think its a morality thing .... but ultimately you are not helping the artist .... as the artist is the person who loses out .... instead someone else makes a good profit.
I am neutral on the subject.
I would personally not buy it, but I believe we all have a right to decide what our morals are.

Not like one could go and buy a gold Kate (or any other) from the artist, and even if one could, then the cost would doubtless prove prohibitive.
Banksy is losing no sales because of this. He has no work available from source. On the rare occasion he does make some available it is gone in seconds. I agree that the printer is profiting off Banksy's work, but disagree that he is making Banksy lose out.
Anytime Banksy wants to sell more stuff, all he has to do is put some stuff up for sale.

Art Wanted, by Deleted on Oct 29, 2013 18:11:27 GMT 1, Personally if I was Banksy and I was releasing prints for around £500 (or much less for Banksy's early work) I'd be far more upset seeing people ON THIS VERY FORUM selling them on for thousands and thousands of pounds with the usual "stored flat in a folder since purchase" written in the description.
I wonder what he would think if he were to read yet another 'For Sale Banksy CYW print £12000' and work out just how much of a mark up someone has made after not very long after not even bothering to put it on the wall (although even if its been on the wall that's not much better).
If people think that someone flogging copies for £60 is worse then they might want to look at where the real greed is coming from and who is really 'using' the Banksy name to line their pockets.

Yep. It did make me chuckle that someone thought Banksy himself would be contacting eBay !

Art Wanted, by skylarkin on Oct 29, 2013 20:26:56 GMT 1, Think my argument would be along the lines that its a copy and not by the original artist, its not even an original take on the subject. At least the album covers that floated about a while back had some originality. By default it should have no place on this forum. Either that or you open the door to a flood of similar items, and that will dilute the forum and where does it end?
That said, I have no qualms discussing the subject, just that the link is still up to a fake, and has received far to much exposure. We all know it goes on, we all have views, just don't think we should give it the publicity.
Steps off of soap box and goes back to biting nails..

It did make me chuckle that someone thought Banksy himself would be contacting eBay ! I have to admit I'm chuckling a bit myself reading your replies. Ebay policy requires the name of the intellectual property holder in order to pull an item on a copyright claim. "Banksy" is a pseudonym, not a name.
If Banksy were form a company, he could authorize Pest Control to legally act on his behalf. But to do so would also require him to divulge his identity. So as it stands, Pest Control would not be able to enforce a copyright claim on his behalf.
On a related note, the intellectual property holder is responsible for enforcing any claim under copyright law. If they fail to do so, their work can fall into public domain. As an anonymous entity, he essentially gives up that right unless and until he comes forward.

I happen to deal with copyrights every day. But it's the internet. So your assumptions are just as valid as experience and knowledge

Art Wanted, by randomname on Oct 29, 2013 22:42:17 GMT 1, Elaine Sturtevant check her out..makes you think The obvious difference is she mastered the crafts of painting, sculpture, film, etc. to make copies that were indistinguishable from the originals. That's a bit different than scanning an image and burning a few screens.
Part of what made her impressive was her ability to perfectly copy a huge range of styles and mediums. The other part was she did it before the artists were widely recognized, meaning she saw something in their work before it became iconic.
