Jean-Michel Basquiat πΊπΈ Brooklyn, New York β’ Graffiti Art , by estelle getty fan club on Sept 12, 2013 16:20:36 GMT 1, Basquiat's meteoric rise to fame could have only happened in NYC at that specific point in time. I would have thought the same could be said about the namesake of this forum or any genre defining/popular culture artist

Jean-Michel Basquiat πΊπΈ Brooklyn, New York β’ Graffiti Art , by Feral Things on Oct 16, 2013 7:32:16 GMT 1, From Monday's Guardian: "Jean-Michel Basquiat: the street-art inspiration for Massive Attack Before he died in 1988, Basquiat made the great leap from graffiti to major galleries. Robert '3D' Del Naja of Massive Attack recalls how the raw beauty of the artist's work inspired his own paintings
This year marked 25 years since Jean-Michel Basquiat died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27. He was an Afro-Puerto Rican kid from Brooklyn who dropped out of school at 15 and ran away from home. He slept on park benches in 70s New York, starting out as a street artist tagging as "Samo" and went on to become, for me, the greatest artist of his generation and one of my biggest influences. Basquiat was one of the first to bring graffiti into the mainstream. The rise β and commodification β of modern street art would not have happened without him. For better or worse, he kicked the art world into paying attention." Article continues here.

Would have liked to have able to get to the 'Fire Sale' show, but other commitments typically got in the way unfortunately. There's still some pieces available, a few of which I really like. And yeah, I agree that the show should have got a lot more attention than it did.

Just enquired about a nice 3D piece at Laz. I can smell the coffee!. I used to love going into the Nero on Cross st Manchester way back, early mornings was always full of Italians reading newspapers while chain smoking and slurping on expresso, what a good atmosphere it was, all stopped with the smoking ban thing.

Jean-Michel Basquiat πΊπΈ Brooklyn, New York β’ Graffiti Art , by Sacked... on Nov 1, 2013 19:02:08 GMT 1, Sunday November 3rd β Monday December 9th 2013.
On a January night in 1979 on the upstairs dance floor of the legendary Mudd Club in Lower Manhattan New York. Nick Taylor meets Jean-Michel Basquiat for the first time, they spend the night dancing and talking about music. After leaving the club they head to Nickβs apartment by cab. They sit and listen to music, Nick picks up his Minolta camera and starts shooting his new friend. Jean-Michel who was a little uneasy at first, began to loosen up, soon the room filled with the intensity and emotions of this 18 year old.
That magical night resulted in a series of photographs that capture the young Basquiatβs eccentric personality and almost childlike enthusiasm. Their friendship grew deeper and they later performed together as part of the industrial-sound band GRAY.
