OCCUPY WALL STREET, by mmmike on Sept 30, 2011 12:23:05 GMT 1, I've been watching this potentially historic protest @ www.livestream.com/globalrevolution and following on Twitter.
I think it is an incredible thing. These protesters are real American heroes.
I really admire the fact they are doing things the way they feel they should be done not necessarily the easy way. Non violent and leaderless.
They are giving us all a lesson on what democracy is.
I'll be going to NYC in November I hope they will still be going strong.
I encourage everyone to take part. If you can get down there please do if not you can help financially and help spreading the word.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by mmmike on Sept 30, 2011 13:04:21 GMT 1, I should also say I have a subscription to adbusters magazine. They have some of the coolest photography and other art in every issue. Even if you couldn't care less about social issues you should check it out just for the visuals. They often have Banksy stuff in there but to me the most interesting stuff comes from photographers and artists I have never seen before.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by Wearology on Sept 30, 2011 15:03:58 GMT 1, This is not a typical week on Wall Street in regards to foot traffic because most companies are closed for the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah). It should be interesting to see if the protest has any affect on Monday when everyone goes back to work.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by BROOKLYNITE on Oct 2, 2011 3:46:31 GMT 1, We are working to organize a protest sign making event down at Zucotti Park (NYC) sometime in the near future. Screen-printers, sticker makers, sign painters. Still putting the pieces together.
For now we wanted to mention that if any artists outside of NYC or the USA for that matter, are interested in creating a sign or two that speaks about the injustices happening in the stock market, banks, big corps, the future of our children or anything else that pertains to Occupy Wall Street Protests you can mail it to us here at Brooklynite and we will personally deliver them to downtown NYC.
They are in desperate need of signage. After the rain today alot of poorly made cardboard signs were ruined. If you have access to button makers or sticker printers or can make t-shirts we would love to hear from you.
Please email us info(at)brooklynitegallery.com if you want to make a sign or be involved. This affects YOU wherever you are in the world.
Thank you.....

Here is a live 24 hour feed
www.livestream.com/globalrevolution
Anonymous are planning an arab spring protest in London, on October 15 meeting at 2 pm Hyde Park marching to parliament square. Totally non violent. The object is to occupy Parliament Square much in the way that happened in Tunisia and Egypt. The most important thing is that it is 100% peaceful. The mainstream media has run a total news blackout in the States. But they cannot ignore it forever.
See you there

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by johnnyh on Oct 2, 2011 18:51:16 GMT 1, Injustices happening in the stock market, banks big corp's. Never heard so much drivel or such a pointless demonstration. You certainly have no real rights to compare yourselves with the protests in Egypt and else where!!!!!
Disagree with the pepper spray that was disgusting.
Why do you not protest for social welfare and healthcare for all. your President wanted it and neither the people or the senate etc supported him.
Your a company as a gallery so bit late to be right on when you sell art for profit to the middle classes.
Think this is a joke IMO
Johnny

We'll try to take more of a high road approach to your negative comments. It's obvious you haven't spent one day down there or bothered to read what the protests are about. To say the American people as a whole are against Obama's healthcare bill shows how much further you are away from reality and probably don't live in the US. These protests do speak about the divide of rich and poor ---but it goes so much further than that. Again if you spent some time reading their website you'd see that.
Instead you choose to make personal attacks about the fact that we sell art to people. What does that have to do with anything? What do you do? Why are you even on this forum if you're against the sale of art?
We have chosen to use what little voice we have to speak out and pool resources to help a cause we believe in. Sorry if you are upset by this.

The protests were started to protest the amount of power that money has in politics. Exactly why there isn't universal health care or any meaningful social welfare (aside form the military).
That power of money has made meaningful democracy in the US impossible. So the protesters are protesting in a pretty pure democratic way. As a result messages and direction changes so if you don't bother to take the time to follow what is going on it is easy to not understand it.
The aim of the protest is not business in general. Protesters are working to make sure small businesses in the area of the protest are not negatively impacted by the protest.
I see nothing wrong with small businesses or big businesses supporting the protest. Anyone who believe in democracy should be supporting the protesters.

Silly posts like this are generally best ignored IMO,
I can't for the life of me see what is wrong with Brooklynite making signs for protesters... Sounds like a great idea.

well that's the trouble isn't it... but someone has to stand up sometime don't they?
If poor black woman called Rosa Parks hadn't stood up to the police there could still be racial segregation in the States.
makes you realise how brave the protesters in Bahrain and Syria are. They are being tortured and killed by the police on a daily basis.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by johnnyh on Oct 3, 2011 3:30:01 GMT 1, The protests in the middle east are completely different. For example noticed in your big democracy , freedom, fairness not seen one banner supporting the claim of the palestinian people to their state. USA just refused to support!!!!!
Why the protest your a democracy so you are allowed to protest. But you voted for these politicians!!!!!
The USA debt problem is the fact that the USA and it's citizens live on debt.
Not read the site here is a classic quote from the site I am a 27 year old with a bachelor degree. I ran out of my student loans while trying to find a job. I am โlivingโ with my mother again to get back on my feet. ย So far, the best I can do is a part time retail job paying $8 an hour. ย I am hearing impaired with cochlear implant. My cochlear implant warranty expired. ย I do not have the money to renew it. ย How can I work at my new minimum wage job when my implant is broken? ย I need it toย HEAR.
I am the 99%. (and I owe so much money) occupywallst.org
Your countries debt is your fault. You voted George Bush in did you or did you not?
Go back and check out his ratings when he was taking you to war. He was very popular. That's where you spent your money. Republicans are right wing conservatives and you voted them in. It is one man/woman one vote is it not.
The 1 percent can only have one percent of the votes. The problem with your protest is that it is fundamentally flawed. It blames the 1 percent and in actual fact the people on the protest are a lot of the problem - the middle class who lived on debt. Took cheap mortgages bought houses they could not afford trying to become richer etc etc vote in right wing government and politicians etc etc it is only now when you have a debt crisis that has been known about for ages when you now have to pay for your wars etc that you are moaning.
So actually I think I have read about this and stick by what I have said. Which I am entitled to as that is as they say democracy. johnny

I am not against the sale of art. However your company sells art to the middle class at a profit. So what is your complaint against other companies corporate or not. I will pretty much gaurantee you that your owner does as much as they can to reduce and avoid paying tax.. I have no problem with this either. But you see where it's going don,t you. It's hard to play both games.
So I made regardless of your accusation no personal attacks. Just an observation and not sure if you work there or are the owner however on this forum you represent a gallery or a business. Your business like any other is ran for profit your site has no great ethical sensibilities or campaigns as it sells art for profit which as mentioned is fine but also difficult when you try to take a moral high ground. Also as mentioned I am on here as it is an art forum not a political one. You chose to bring a political protest in new York onto an art site not me.

Also as mentioned I am on here as it is an art forum not a political one. You chose to bring a political protest in new York onto an art site not me.

It may shock you to learn Johnny but before the wonderful expression 'urban art' was born, there was this form of expression called 'street art', which was, born on the streets in alot of cases as a form of protest, some may even say some of which was 'political' in nature.
