What idiots! Kill big business. So effin stupid. Using the internet to spout this crap. Cisco, MicroSoft, Oracle, JDSU, Akami,...rule the space. Nobody would have a voice without big business. The silly protesters wouldn't be able to make the first sign without big business. You'd have no electricity, no phone, no internet, no transportation and no food.
This occupy is a fool's game. How about working your way up, being innovative and saving/investing for a future?

Yeah, things are good. Was let go twice in 2009, started my own company and now doing better than ever with more than twice the vacation and doubling the cash flow. Big business is amazing if you're willing to build a skill set & work. Ahmed's Grocery, while good for Ahmed and the locals, won't get very far without the dairy, produce, meat, coke, dry goods & tobacco suppliers.
Look around, big business brought all of it to you. Ignorance must be bliss.
I don't know what you do mmmike, and I don't want to argue, but big business and education have increased the living standards of a large portion of humanity. I do think if we have done well, we should help others. Personally, I prefer direct help and have given out money to friends in need. Some of it had been squandered and some of it has saved the remanents of families--win some, lose some, but it's all good. I don't regret any of it.

I appreciate you not stooping to my level by just making a smart ars comment back. So let me take the time to address your points constructively.
โWhat idiots! Kill big business. So effin stupid.โ
First off the goal of the protest isnโt to kill big business it is to stop the huge influence that business (money) has in politics which erodes democracy. One person one vote is very different from one dollar one vote.
That said my personal opinion is that big business is a net public bad. But we can save that for another debate. If you are interested there is a great Canadian documentary called โThe Corporationโ that highlights many of the problems with how corporations (publicly traded) are forced to operate by law. I think it is available for free download online. Iโll look later.
โCisco, MicroSoft, Oracle, JDSU, Akami,...rule the space.โ
Iโm not sure what you mean here. They certainly are big companies. It should be noted that the internet originated from the US military. Yet none of the profits of the above companies (aside from minimal taxes) have been paid back to the tax payers who funded the initial research and start up. As well much of the advancements in programing as come form non profit open source solutions that were not driven by profit.
The fact that a few have so much power over what should be โpublic goodsโ is quite scary much like the large power that a few key financial institutions have.
โNobody would have a voice without big business. The silly protesters wouldn't be able to make the first sign without big business.โ
Again not quite sure what you are getting at. Just because a service is provided by a โbig businessโ does not mean it canโt happen independently of that structure.
โYou'd have no electricity, no phone, no internet, no transportation and no food.โ
Electricity was discovered / invented long before corporations existed. Here is a nice summery of the early history of electricity. inventors.about.com/cs/inventorsalphabet/a/electricity.htm. Large transmission projects still tend to be heavily subsidised by governments because they are generally not profitable otherwise. We the people have funded much of the research and modern infrastructure only to have corporations profit from it.
The phone was invented by Alexander Gram Bell, not a corporation. Again governments have heavily subsidised the infrastructure costs required for telecommunications industry. A great deal of the research around fiber optics was done by publicly funded universities and through military projects where once again the wealth has been past largely for free to for profit corporations to profit off of research paid by us.
Transportation (cars and planes) have definitely grown out of the industrial revolution and businesses have played a major role. That is not to say they could not have come from government or cooperatives had corporations not been allowed the power they have. Plus lets not forget the legacy of pollution and unsastainability that has come along with our car culture. Had profit (measured as it is) not been the sole motivator perhaps we could have developed better alternatives. On an interesting side note, back in the day Henry Ford was against making excessive profits and wanted to refund some of the companies profits to its customers. If I remember correctly that was shot down by other shareholders.
As for food, people have been eating long before corporation, factory farming and heavily processed foods have created an epidemic of heart disease, cancer and obesity that definitely would not be possible otherwise.
โThis occupy is a fool's game. How about working your way up, being innovative and saving/investing for a future?โ
A lot of people donโt have the same opportunities. We are destroying the planet at a breath taking pace and not everyone is able to participate to the same extent. Is it possible to come from nothing and work your way up within the system? Sure but it isnโt a fare game. We can do a lot better to ensure everyone has an opportunity for greatness or at least an opportunity for basic human needs.
โYeah, things are good. Was let go twice in 2009, started my own company and now doing better than ever with more than twice the vacation and doubling the cash flow.โ
Glad to hear it. Unfortunately things are not that good for a great deal of the worldโs population.
โBig business is amazing if you're willing to build a skill set & work. Ahmed's Grocery, while good for Ahmed and the locals, won't get very far without the dairy, produce, meat, coke, dry goods & tobacco suppliers.โ
Again mass production of โfoodโ is making the world quite sick. Iโm luck that I can afford to by local organic vegan food. I eat quite well, corporations are that involved in any of it. But most are not so lucky and end up eating processed crap that is slowly or in some cases quickly killing people.
having a a few large companies dominating an industry can lead to lack of innovation and competition and ultimately economic instability and and a huge mismatch between the rights of capital vs the rights of labor that leads to exploitation of labor. So many other issues are introduced but I'm prob. already blabbing on too long.
โLook around, big business brought all of it to you. Ignorance must be bliss.โ
I know I do get lots of things form big businesses but that doesnโt mean those same things couldnโt come from other sources if corporations didnโt have so much power. I also recognise that I canโt swim in the lake by my home because of corporate pollution. I see that every life support system of this planet is in decline because of the impacts of corporations. But Iโm getting off topic a bit.
โI don't know what you do mmmike, and I don't want to argue, but big business and education have increased the living standards of a large portion of humanity.โ
I have a double specialist degree in Economics and Finance. Iโm a CFA Charter holder and a Certified Management Accountant. I work in Investment Compliance.
Your assumption that big business has raised the standard of living for a large portion of humanity is partly correct. Iโd agree there has been an increase in living standards for many over the same time period as corporations have been given power, however I wonโt concede that these same or likely greater gains would not have happened if corporations were not given the unaccountable power they have.
โI do think if we have done well, we should help others. Personally, I prefer direct help and have given out money to friends in need. Some of it had been squandered and some of it has saved the remanents of families--win some, lose some, but it's all good. I don't regret any of it.โ
Good stuff I admire your generosity. I think I can do a lot more to help others than I do. I guess that is why I really admire those people who are out there doing something to try to bring about meaningful change. Peacefully protesting despite violence perpetrated against them, that is amazing!

Sharpies & cardboard are made by big business. Very simple.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by mmmike on Oct 6, 2011 19:40:48 GMT 1, Hi all, I mentioned the documentary The Corporation in an earlier post here. I couldn't find the entire movie online in one piece. It used to be available. But it is on YouTube in 23 parts. Kind of a pain but the movie is so good it is worth watching any way you can.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. A bit slow for the first half but so densely packed with important info that I have watched it many times. Educational and entertaining. My favorite parts are with Ray Anderson CEO of a carpet company. He makes some very compelling arguments.
Here is a link to the trailer www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi42664217/
You can search youtube for the 23 parts to see the movie, or get it through a (Removed) site if you are into that sort of thing or itunes and similar should have it.
An interesting note, the film makers are the ones that originally made the movie available for free online. They thought it was more important to get the work out there than to make a profit.
Please let me know what you think of the movie.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by kjzimm on Oct 6, 2011 19:50:11 GMT 1, I like your points mmmike. I agree with some and believe there are other ways of addressing the problems before tearing down the corporate world.
Among their demands are; guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment, free college education, open borders migration & immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all.
occupywallst.org/forum/proposed-list-of-demands-for-occupy-wall-st-moveme/
Pardon me for saying that those demands I listed would destroy our economy. It all sounds great in "Imagine", I'm all for that! The problem is humans will be involved and I don't trust them. They're smelly too;)

I agree those demands are likely not going to happen but it is a starting point for people to discuss. I think one of the major problems with our political system and corporate media is that they constrain debate to very narrow topics and points of view. Often there are very powerful ideas and solutions at the margins. You don't even have to go to extremes. It is hard to imagine that universal health care has been move completely out of the discussions when it comes to debates on health care reform.
Where as for me the debate should be how best to implement universal health care fast.
So i think the demands do a couple of things they help to widen the debate and they stimulate debate and engage the masses in the process.
We are having these discussions here because of the protests. That alone is a positive in my mind. People talking about the issues not limited by the media narrow lens. That is huge.
And yes I would say spending a couple weeks camping in NYC with out even tents, I'm sure they don't smell like roses.

All the pie in sky is just that. 1person 1vote is pretty good. Your problem is that 1person usually does not vote!!!! Unless you change that all very good but a bit point less
Sad but that is actuallynthevway itbis

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by Deleted on Oct 6, 2011 23:57:26 GMT 1, Of course there are only two economic models capitalism and communism.... ?
There are a myriad of economy types and ways of facing the worlds issues, but most importantly it involves understanding them. And not getting your knowledge from right wing editorials locked in blinkered views of the world.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by boatyy on Oct 7, 2011 0:02:58 GMT 1, you'll be surprised to know a number of the people protesting actually have jobs (sometimes 3 of them) and in some cases their own businesses... they are not protesting just for themselves on this one particular issue but for society as a whole...
i was not a fan of yesterday's union protest; but objectively stopped by the park today... and there are alot of learnings going on there (beyond jobs)... they are more progressive and multidimensionally minded than you may be giving them credit for... imo...

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by cornholio on Oct 7, 2011 0:46:47 GMT 1, You really donโt get it? Do you? Sharpies & cardboard are made by big business. Very simple.
Oh now I get it!
I guess everyone should shut the ell up and go work for a big business. Never question why the wage gape and wealth gap has widened. We shouldn't be upset that the banks lied to us about the safety of derivatives or set up a scheme to hide (and profit from) how much money greece really had borrowed. It's perfectly fine if big business sends job overseas to exploit people willing to work for oppressive wages. We shouldn't care that millions of people had their homes foreclosed while the banks raked in record profits (because they started to bet the economy would fail) and gave out huge bonuses.
It's my fault that the economy collapsed because George Bush was my leader. We have no right to complain about any of that. Because these big corporations make sharpies that allow us peons the ability to write! Oh thank you big business.

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by boatyy on Oct 7, 2011 0:53:42 GMT 1, i got a query about why they are "chanting"...LOL
i too originally thought they were loons with all the chanting... ;D
so I asked one of the facilitators at the park - why are you guys doing that... (he laughed)
the fact is they do not have permits for microphones and amplification systems; and in order for the crowds to hear what the speakers are saying... the front of the crowd repeats what is said and then the middle repeats it again for the back of the crowd to hear...
think of it as practical human echoing system...
that initially bothered me too, ;D
(Note: you may have noticed at yesterday's protest there were microphones etc. - but that was at the Labor Unions protest - they have permits, as they are organizations...)

We had a great day helping spread the word about a cause we believe in. Special thanks to Mau Mau who lent us one of his images. To Mula Printing for sending us stickers and pre-printed boards. To Beejoir for his support and to all the volunteers who came out and lent a hand. We'll add more names as we remember them. It's been a long day. We'll be back next week for another round. OCCUPY WALL STREET, by lojack on Oct 8, 2011 4:59:44 GMT 1, johnnyh you're rather quick to blame bush for everything, including our debt, and yet Obama has caused more debt alone then every other president combined. Little fun fact for you...
"Among their demands are; guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment, free college education, open borders migration & immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all."
As an American I'm embaressed by these "demands" from the OWS's. Shows how little they know/understand about our country

OCCUPY WALL STREET, by pcant on Oct 8, 2011 5:55:41 GMT 1, Take Wikipedia with a grain of salt (although these are CBO figures), but your claim that Obama has "created more debt alone than all former president(s) combined" is questionable.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S._presidential_terms
And taking one idiotic statement to smear a movement that has legitimate gripes about the way banks and big business have flourished while ordinary Americans are out of work is a bit misleading. Why is it that the media adorns the tea party (a largely "astro-turf" movement) with legitimacy (despite idiotic statements like "No socialized medicine! Hands off my Medicare" while the OWS protesters are slammed for having iPhones?
