Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by Gentle Mental on May 22, 2012 11:36:16 GMT 1, yes, i've seen earlier version of this print, and there are a lot of nice little details in it, two to 3 screens. the deepest being a screen of calligraphic scribbles of the chinese words "grass, mud, horse" which has the same phonic sounds as a really crude phrase ai weiwei used to describe the "people-in-charge"
weiweicam.com/ is the site that inspired this piece. the site's not working in Singapore now... not sure if it does in your part of the world.
would really love to hear your thoughts on this piece. good and bad.

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by Greekboy on May 22, 2012 17:45:20 GMT 1, Loving Zhao's output of Ai Wei Wei iconography. The only problem is figuring out which of the four colorways to pick up.
If anyone has any hesitation you won't be disappointed. The last two releases look amazing and Highly Framable's service has been top notch. Aside from the subject matter, the raw look and feel are reminiscint of early Bast screen prints.

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by politrix on May 22, 2012 18:55:22 GMT 1, I think it's a visual appealing print. I like the way how all elements in this print are arranged. I like the layering in this print and the details will be great when you see this print in person. I'm not really into the Wei Wei iconography. The statement in this print becomes to attachted to a specific person (I can see this will get me negative karma
Sorry for the bad english.

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by highly framable on May 23, 2012 1:06:23 GMT 1, thanks for answering the tweet! you guys rock!
here's zhao's response:
"the print is my reaction to not just weiwei cam (though that was the starting point) but to the idea of how power has leaked from the government into everyone's hands. Now mighty politicians (and dictators even) have to tip toe around issues, not just in fear of the nosy journalists, but the bored, facebook poking, you-tube cute kitty watching, internet users. it's a reminder of the power we have inherited, and the weiwei iconography is a symbol of the lives we can affect with this power, in a very real and direct way."
zhao's very pleased with this statement (the guy should get his own account here and stop sending me late night emails...)
do let us know your thoughts!
zhao will pick his favourite response (good or bad it's fine!) and send a FREE laser cut AI THE GIANT stencil by drop time!

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by misterx on May 23, 2012 2:14:27 GMT 1, Why have you chosen to ship flat? Whilst I am sure you have your reasons, a month or so ago ESPO shipped his You/Me print flat, and had LOTS returned due to damage....
Good luck either way...

thanks for the post!
yes, we're shipping these prints flat because 1. the prints are not big, we would ship tubed if they're any bigger. 2. we're using much thicker boards than epso (we ordered one from Epso too!) 3. we're shipping then via very pricey DHL service (so they stay in transit much shorter) 4. and zhao likes to use thick, textured, papers which is hard to roll... (and flattened)
5. And it's really, really nice to see the prints arrived flat and perfect.

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by misterx on May 23, 2012 4:07:55 GMT 1, GLOBAL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
by zhao 4 colorways ed of 25 each 420 x 297mm 2-3 colour hand painted silkscreen on very fancy 270gsm cotton paper each print comes with AI THE GIANT laser cut stencil free and a chance to win the last 2 CHAIRMAN squares. Artist's statement: "i want to make a neighbourhood watch posters you find at police stations. But I want to say the exact opposite thing. Weiwei cam started the snowball rolling in my head. My comment:
Was wondering why you chose the word "YOU" are watching Big Brother if,as you say above, "..we have the tech, we are watching you too"?? "WE are watching BB" sounds more like a collective, a group which has strength in numbers, whereas YOU sounds, well, less threatening to the Establishment that WE are all so against... All the above respectfully of course
Nice print...cerise is my fave variant.

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by highly framable on May 23, 2012 4:43:51 GMT 1, zhao's feedback:
"Nice comment! The words came quite automatically. It's a total flip on George Orwell's BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING US may be technically correct, but less scary for Mr Orwell. And WE ARE WATCHING BIG BROTHER is not scary enough for me... i guess... I think the lone YOU is now more powerful than ever, and that is why politicians are so edgy now. BTW, the title GLOBAL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH is title of an article Neal Stephenson did way back when for wired magazine, read it if you can find it, very refreshing in today's context. I know, everything I make is from stolen spare parts of other people's ideas..."

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by highly framable on May 23, 2012 16:15:08 GMT 1, zhao's comment:
"i'm very proud of the stencil. i wanted it to be as minimalist and iconic as shepard fairey's Andre, and i stole the word Giant as a nod to the guy I stole the whole look from. So yes, this is a two-artwork-in-one release. Ghost mini prints used an older cut. a different, thinner one, made for spray painting blotchy chunks on paper. There was only one stencil made for Ghost mini prints. This edition has a different cut, and material, made for the quick outdoor use, sturdy and back-pack friendly. You can frame it of course, but I do hope people would use it for a while before framing. Trust me, it'll look much cooler with sprayed colors on."

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by aa on May 24, 2012 2:01:36 GMT 1, I got the Ghost print this week, and have to say how much I like it. The only problem is where to put it. It's too small to put in the living room that catches the light, but the spot in the hall that it fits in perfectly, makes it look a bit flat... I'm gonna have to think about this one.
As for the new print, the yellow one is the clear winner for me. I had a discussion/argument with some friends in the pub about the whole idea of putting these prints up, and they convinced me that it was a good idea. Simply put, a strong image, with a strong reason for putting it there, is surely the reason we like this stuff.

Zhao πΈπ¬ Print Release β’ Show News β’ Art For Sale, by My Name is Frank on May 24, 2012 9:09:03 GMT 1, I appreciate the message, just not sure its the right thing as a saleable image. This looks like a street paste up to me, rather than something to hang in a living room. The chairman was certainly a more obvious wall at home piece, but reaction seems pretty good, so what the hell do I know.

Yes, it looks kinda loud and stark as a jpeg. wall-friendliness rarely cross our minds... could be the thing that finally kills us!
anyhoo, zhao'll be sending the final jpegs in two days, it's taking some time, as each layer takes a while to dry, and be treated, it could be quite different by saturday... he wants it to look like something made by "a very drunk Ryan McGinness"... we'll see!
keep the comments coming, it's driving zhao nuts! hahaha
