artist's statement on THE CHAIRMAN series:

"i was inspired by how public offices have A3 photos of their leaders, gold framed to be worshipped and reminded that he is the highest high, watching over you. i believe, as a counter move, every art-loving home and office cubicle should hang a picture of Ai Weiwei as Chairman Mao, it should be an image made angrily, in a shoddy, made-in-china mass produced Warholian silkscreen way - a method of printmaking which is, coincidentally, the only way I know how to make prints. Serendipity? Sure, why not."



about the artist:

zhao is a singaporean, he's been in the business of making designs and films for over a decade, but he has no formal training as an artist, and it shows.

google him and you won't find anything, because he doesn't quite exist yet. We believe zhao has great ideas and would love for him to keep making more stuff for us in days to come.

This looks awful (in its execution). But then I read the artists statement and it appears to be intentionally awful (which is almost clever). And it wasn't until I started to read the statement that I cottoned on that it wasn't actually Chairman Mao. I think this now might be awfully good. Hmmmm. Chin-stroke.

it took zhao (and us) a lot of paint and paper to get to a point where he thinks is worthy to be left on the street to dry!

And he's working on a simpler colorway, but is still not happy with it yet. It might take a while.



possibly the only way to get art on the street in Singapore!

This is a no brainer. Mind you, with only 41 available I think I'll be lucky to get one!!

Some samples of the variations. Paper may be trimmed a little. But not too much because the shape is right. Artist has yet signed the work. He is currently away and be back in 5-6 days to do the signing. Shipping will commence soon after.

A big thank you to one and all! It's after midnight here is humid Singapore, and we're off for a bit of cheap duty-free wines celebrating! It's all very new and exciting for us. And your support means so much!

There are a few prints left, apologies for the nasty wait for cart to drop, really glad with the results!
We'll figure a way to make carting system work better for the next release.
