Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by jynormous on May 16, 2008 12:54:02 GMT 1, I must say that im very dissapointed with these too.
Not only the images, but the price to match.
For me, Β£250 is far to high for an artists first release!

Certainly one for the future
Are you doing his mam?

I've been waiting for that line...
I honestly believe that the best thing we can do for this kid is to tell it like it is. Hopefully he will then go and have a long hard think and possibly, just possibly, come back with something worthwhile.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by streetgirl on May 16, 2008 13:13:55 GMT 1, I usually try and steer clear of negative comments - opting with the 'nothing nice to say don't say it at all attitude' however, feel there is a need for constructive criticism.
The kid may have some talent, but let's not over-state this. A long way to go in improving and perhaps a deal to sell canvasses for him should have come a little further down the line. I certainly don't think these are anywhere good enough to be sold/touted at Β£250 a pop.
You see the difference in quality when you look at these and Grafter's 'charity' canvas.
And before you tell me how old Cartrain is, it's irrelevant now that he/galleries are saying he's good enough to compete with others and sell pieces at these prices.

Agreed. Made me go back and edit some of my previous comments as that summed it all up really.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by seidbereit on May 16, 2008 13:26:54 GMT 1, Very well said, streetgirl. There's not a single point or opinion there that i don't agree with, from the talent (raw as it is), to the pricing to the timing.
There are several other artists offering work in the same approx. price bracket, Grafter being one, although you could name Dog-Byte, SPQR and many others in the same breath, with the vital difference being the originality of the others and their technical ability and attention to execution. I mean, if you look closely at the lollipop lady one (in fact you don't really have to look that close), the sign which should be round has hints of little corners, for 250 pounds that should not be the quality on offer.

Cartrain π¬π§ Tate Gallery β’ Damien Hirst β’ Gilbert & George, by Montubu7 on May 16, 2008 13:34:24 GMT 1, I should add its fair play to cartrain getting his work out on the street at such an early age but think he needs to hone his style & skill out there before doing deals with galleries to sell work @ a premium price.
Its worth mentioning that SPQR started slowly with much cheaper work and as he worked his skills up & built a fanbase his prices only increased in line with what people were willing to pay, i cannot see the market for this work at this price.
Cartrain could very well growinto something special but i think he needs to use the street as his artbook a little while longer & getting his stuff up away from banksy street work should really be a must!

could understand the issue until i re-read Β£25 as Β£250 then choked on my own tongue.
no worries over the art itself, but lets get reasonable Β£100 a pop for the canvas, i mean at Β£250 as canvas what are you gonna ask for a print...Β£125...I think not, not yet anyway!!
