How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by craigf on Oct 23, 2009 11:59:46 GMT 1, Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I thought the forum has a lot of people who would be able to help with this simple request ;D
I am going to paint my son's room and one request is to make part of a wall look like it is exposed brick. I can't chase off the plaster as the wall is internal and plaster board so my idea was to paint a portion with a colour similar to the mortar between the bricks and then use a sponge or stencil shape like a brick to mock the brick work. I am intending to use emulsion and to mix the brick colour and then put some shading / additional colours on each individual brick.
Has anyone tried to do something similar or do you have any ideas of how to make this look reasonably realistic at least from a distance?
All input greatly appreciated ;D
thanks

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by schlomo on Oct 23, 2009 14:10:18 GMT 1, As a very easy way to stencil a brick looking wall, paint the wall the colour of the mortar, then use masking tape to cover the lines which will be your mortar (horizontal and vertical obviously). Then spray over the top the colour of the bricks, i tend to use rust, then a slightly lighter red and then a bit of black. Peel off the masking tape and your done!

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by stillborncrisps on Oct 24, 2009 13:36:35 GMT 1, I once saw a guy paint the wall mortar colour, then use a few different brick-shaped pieces of wood he'd cut to block print the bricks on.
A bit like simple potato printing, and gives a less regular pattern than masking tape would. He used several different shades of red for each brick, so each brick probably got 2 or 3 layers in the end, again, making the finished piece look more organic/natural.

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by hero on Oct 24, 2009 14:29:23 GMT 1, you can get some textured spraypaints down at B&Q, have to say that the normal spray paint there is quite thin, but if they have "brick effect" etc then that may be the best thing for the job?

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by nah on Oct 24, 2009 17:01:27 GMT 1, Why not get some bricks, cut them into thin slices and glue them on the wall. I've always wanted to do this.

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by craigf on Oct 24, 2009 18:12:39 GMT 1, Thanks for all the replies. I am wanting it to look like the plaster has fallen off on a couple of corners so it would be best if the "bricks" were flush rather than proud so a paint effect is likely to look better (depending on how well I paint it!)

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by craigf on Oct 30, 2009 10:09:59 GMT 1, It's still in the concept stage, which can be translated into I am a lazy b and need to get off my backside and start! The walls have tape in the corners that has blown so I've a bit of prep work to do as well before I start to progress. Busy this weekend, who knows it might start next ;D

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by marshman on Nov 4, 2009 23:27:28 GMT 1, you mean something like this....
goldieforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=35
This was brick until it was given an undercoat for the live painting. Quite a bit of effort involved using brick slips (as they are called), it is in three 2 feet x 8feet sections each of which is heavy!!!

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by craigf on Nov 6, 2009 21:40:11 GMT 1, Finally got around to my first few bricks. This is obviously work in progress, but I thought I'd show some teaser shots I've decided to "print" the bricks using different shades of red to build up layers of different colours. This should make each look unique plus I've decided if there is the odd paint run I am going to leave it to add some additional character
(just waiting to sync my iphone up )

How to paint a wall to look like brick work, by craigf on Nov 9, 2009 22:44:26 GMT 1, thanks Adam, I am really happy with the end effect as I'm not claiming to be at all artistic and it just seemed to go together better than I could have hoped ;D
