gent รacardi on Dec 22, 2006 23:28:42 GMT 1, hehehe Mr Bacardi... don't worry yourself mate! You'll end up a jibbering wreck! I think the rippling comes from the thickness of the ink and the way it reacts to the temperature compared to the paper it's attached to. I have always noticed that pulp fiction is the worst... heavy thick ink covering the whole image? This would make sense, as the others you mention, J&J, Napalm etc are all the same.... ink covers the entire image oh bollox.... ... ive just realised, the other prints you mention also have ink over the whole rectanular image... forget that theory... ... but still dont worry Hmm back the drawing board!>
Heehee
Well basically I'm just bugged because it looks pretty bad Here's a pic. I tweaked the brightness & contrast so that you can see the extent of the rippling. The vertical lines are not from reflection.

I did! The same thing happened to my Jack & Jill too, only not as bad... I took them both to the shop, but it's VERY brightly lit there and *poof* all the ripples seemed to disappear there. Can't see the rippling when lights are shining on it at all angles. I described the rippling, and only after lotsa close scrutiny could he see it, but only very minor. The framer guy said that there's nothing he could do, as prints will ripple if they're not mounted on a board. Even suggested that I consider mounting it on a board!
Basically, he said that there's nothing he could do. If I take it elsewhere, I'll be charged lots of money for sure, 'cos they'll probably treat it as a complete re-framing job So nu, none of yours have rippled at all?

Show everyone your latest Art Purchase?, by lesroy on Dec 23, 2006 11:25:23 GMT 1, Bacardi, I have no rippling at all... even on my VERY long WSM. Get the framer to shine a light across the image from left to right, that will highlight the lumps more.
I'd also imagine that another framer would help without charging the earth... esp as they are likely to get all your future business too.
Your framer doesn't appear to have been the most helpful either, I remember you having trouble with you applause too?

Me neither, and to be honest, doesn't sound like he's the most helpful framer in the world, it's really important that you develop a trusting relationship. As soon as you showed them they should have at least taken it and tried to fix, take your business elsewhere. And as noted above, tell the new framer that you're a collector and he'll recognise that fixing your problem for cheap will get him perhaps years of business. Important that you get on an equal footing and don't just be a sappy customer. Go in with ideas of your own, discuss, and more importantly try and build a lasting relationship.
I think if you take it elsewhere they'll maybe fix it for free/cheap if you're also having another one framed. Good luck.
Right, off Xmas shopping. Xmas day in Norway tomorrow ;D ;D ;D Maybe I fly to UK on Monday and have another one

Show everyone your latest Art Purchase?, by corblimeylimey on Dec 23, 2006 12:47:39 GMT 1, Sorry to say Agent B, it doesn't look too good, mine is smooth all over it's just the top edge where you can see it very slightly coming away from the top mount board. I presume that my prints not only have the 'outer' board with the viewing aperture, but also have a board behind it too, it would be mounted (or stuck) to conservation standard at only two or three points along the top edge.
Take it to another framer for their views on it if I where you. Good luck.

Show everyone your latest Art Purchase?, by ab on Dec 23, 2006 18:12:39 GMT 1, you can have a backing board without it being pasted to anything...my framer puts in what looks like a large acid free xmas card with the hole cut out of one side....then uses conservation tape to attach the print between the two...close the card up and you have a nicely mounted printed that wont ripple because its sandwiched between two pieces of mounting board... not sure that makes much sense reading it back....but it works a treat...i thought it must be standard practice ?

gent รacardi on Dec 23, 2006 22:57:51 GMT 1, Thanks loads for your input, corblimeylimey, nu, les and ab! Much appreciated!! I have now determined that this it's NOT normal for my prints to be like that, will bring it to another framer. Unfortunately, because of the holidays, they're going to have to stay like that for another 3 days
So frustrating!!!! And I thought this framer was awesome for giving me such good advice about mount colors!

Show everyone your latest Art Purchase?, by atkuefler on Dec 27, 2006 17:49:52 GMT 1, So I brought my Applause to the framer. WOW, that is one expensive picture to frame. I tried to do it right with mate, highend frame, UV antireflective glass, etc. The quote I got back was over $800 US! What? So I went with a really nice frame, UV anitreflective glass and NO mate! $483 US..... Way more than I wanted to pay, but what the h*ll. I will get it back this Saturday and I will post pic ASAP. Anyone else get quoted on framing the Applause?

Is antireflective glass really necessary for you? 'Cos I think that's why the ridiculous quote is so high. My framer showed me the antireflective glass that they use in museums, it looks brilliant, but it's way too expensive. I got a quote for float mounting with a mat and a nice frame, regular UV perspex, which came up to US$430... and I still thought it was too high! Then scud80 introduced me to this place in downtown LA which would do it for around $350. Do you live in LA, atkuefler? Or is it too late to change framers if you are?
Ah well... if you love something you wouldn't spending money on it Good luck!

Show everyone your latest Art Purchase?, by atkuefler on Dec 27, 2006 21:12:52 GMT 1, Actually the cost difference between antireflective glass and regular glass was like $50... My biggest cost was in the frame itself. I paid like $20 per foot. I could have went with a basic boring frame, but then you save like $100 and have a plain boring frame. I guess I just like things that look different and I seem to always pay alot for "different". I live in Minneapolis and this is one of the best framing shops in the city! Also I really like the look of antireflective glass.
