Hello from newby and some ebay purchase questions, by sashaz on Jan 14, 2009 14:49:03 GMT 1, Hi everyone I am a newby on the site and have some questions regarding purchasing banksy on the ebay link on the site.
I like quite a few of the items and would like to know what the chances are that these works are fake. i wouldnt mind paying thousands for some prints but I have ever only looked at gallery purchasing (where you have a greater confidence on the validity of the work). Im also looking for some warhol signed prints and possibly a Hirst (jabos lader) print.
Thus any advise on your experiences of what is correct and what to look out for when purchasing the bansky prints from this ebay link?

Hello from newby and some ebay purchase questions, by onemandown72 on Jan 14, 2009 14:58:40 GMT 1, Ebay can be a totally acceptable & safe place to buy so long as you are sensible and take due care in buying. As a rule with any art:
1. Prioir to bidding ensure that the items have rock solid provenance, ask for the sales history of the work, ie Are you buying from the orignal purchaser, are the registered owner. If you get vague non commital answers then not worth the risk involved in buying 2. If you can buy in person, & pay in cash. It's less likely you'll get ripped off if doing the transaction face to face. You can negotiate on a cheaper price as no Ebay / paypal fees involved, and you can check on the condition of the art. No danger of getting damaged in transit etc. Hope this helps

Hello from newby and some ebay purchase questions, by Harveyn on Jan 14, 2009 15:23:12 GMT 1, If you are paying several thousands for a signed Banksy its worth getting Pest Control certification. Received mine this morning for a signed Virgin Mary and it is a work of art in itself.
Before paying I would ask for the original owners name and have it checked by Dora at POW. I would then pay the ยฃ50 for the PC COA just to have rock solid provenance.
Not sure if its the same in every case but they also registered my name as the print owner.

Hello from newby and some ebay purchase questions, by Heavyconsumer on Jan 14, 2009 19:24:53 GMT 1, Welcome Sashaz. For what it's worth, I'd prefer to buy from someone through the forum who has multiple references than on Ebay. It's a matter of preference, but I like dealing with people who, although I don't know them, feel somewhat familiar already. I'm always frightened of an empty tube showing up and the seller saying, "you signed for it, your problem!" I know this can happen wherever you meet the seller though. I've bought, sold and swapped in here, with never so much as a hint of trouble, so I tend to avoid Ebay where possible. Not to mention Paypal and Ebay fees can be circumvented here and prices adjusted accordingly (8%ish might seem peanuts, but it adds up when you're spending thousands!). Needless to say, regardless of where you're buying, it's always important to follow your intuition and not send cash to someone you're uncomfortable dealing with, or whose communication is poor (vital imo) - it just isn't worth the stress! (If their communication frustrates before you send them money, imagine what it might be like once they do have the cash!)
Good luck and happy hunting.

Hello from newby and some ebay purchase questions, by Heavyconsumer on Jan 14, 2009 19:28:16 GMT 1, And make sure to use an auction sniper if bidding in auctions. I only became aware of these recently, but they cut the risk of shill bidding where you may be the most serious buyer and save the inconvenience of watching the auction ending. I tried and liked www.auctionsniper.com but there are others out there too.
