Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by elwheel on Sept 4, 2008 16:13:05 GMT 1, Hello Folks,
Kinda accidentally bought a Stop and Search from Santa's Ghetto at Xmas - it appeared on the website just as I opened the page and I stuck it in the basket. Anyhoo, I really do like Banksys stuff but that image doesn't really do anything for me so I was thinkin of sellin it - I bought the Paul Insect too - I was flush and I thought my brother would buy it off me (think he's on this board somewhere too) - turns out he doesn't rate it either. I actually prefer Frank Kozik music posters from bands I would have followed in the past.
To cut a long story short, I was readin on this board about people not buying from people on ebay if they only have a low rating. I have only got a rating of 21 (100%) but if you look at the stuff I bought you'll not see any big purchases or much art and my last two deals were for stuff like Harry Potter books! If I stick the StopandSearch for sale on ebay would it help if I put up the exact print number and even my name and postcode? Why do people not say what their print number is anyway? My contract at work is up next March so I'm gonna have a clear out and hopefully get my Kitchen sorted out before it collapses on me. I have that Banksy, Paul Insects who to believe, Hushs Graf Warrior and an ashtray from Damien Hirsts Pharmacy restaurant. Also wonder should I sell them now or put off the kitchen for a year or so.

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by bobbyt23 on Sept 4, 2008 16:18:20 GMT 1, How do you accidently buy something when you have to fill in loads of details and press a few buttons?
But to be positive aswell stick them on e-bay as auctions with no reserve with good photos and you will get the going rate for them.

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by elwheel on Sept 4, 2008 16:47:35 GMT 1, When I say Kinda accidently bought it, I was only noseying on the Santas Ghetto site not intending to buy anything, it appeared, managed to get it in my basket, phoned my brother who has a fair few Banksys and he told me I'd be a tube not to buy it. So I did. But why do people on ebay not give out the print number they have. I would imagine that a #1 print is worth more than a #2 but after that surely they're all worth the same. Thanks for the offer Ross...I'm going to sleep on it...

They don't show the number for two reasons really: 1. They don't want someone selling a fake on with their number and the possibility of having the registered buyers name to back it up!! 2. They are generally filthy flippers who only bought the fucking print to make a quick buck and the muppets are shit scared incase POW check their records and refuse future purchases.
So if you don't want to have your Banksy copied/forged and if it is your intention of flipping a print in the future to make a quick buck I suggest you leave the number off.
To add insult to injury you register on here with zero fucking knowledge and then have the outright cheek to ask for advice on how's the best way to flip your print!
Love people like you mate, you will go down a storm here bud!
Good luck with your print, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!

Bit of a harsh response from you there pud, dont think he really deserved that, unknowledgable he may be,so that is obviously why he registered on here for some advice, and ended up getting you! As for flippers, you cant really say a lot pud ,considering what you have been trying to sell.

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by jonpud on Sept 4, 2008 18:20:03 GMT 1, How can you accuse me of flipping when I am selling just about everything for the same price or less than I bought it for?!
As I always maintain, you are welcome to your opinion as I am mine, but please make sure you have your facts right!
And yes, perhaps a little harsh, but come on, first post on here and its about how to make a profit from a print the guy never wanted, I did want it, F5 for 7days and got zilch, think I have an excuse for being a little pissed!!!!

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by Richard on Sept 4, 2008 18:38:38 GMT 1, PUD, I don't care if people flip (don't know if you do or not)...but the only reason (99% of the time) anyone sells for cost is because that is all they are worth on the market - it's not to do anyone any favours.

I hear where you are coming from and I don't want to get this all out of proportion, but this is blatent flipping and I personally hate it!
And I have sold to forum members on her for cost and for less than I have paid which was also less than the current market price, and yes I did it as favors to those concerned. Aint looking for a medal but no one can accuse me of 'flipping'
I hate it and don't take kindly to those who associate me with it!
Anyway, why the hard time, the guy came on here for advice and I gave him two truthful reasons which should hopefully help him. I doubt he will ever post again now he has what he wants and I doubt he would ever post anything constructive or even consider being an active member of the forum with a valuable contribution.
I stand by my comments, now please excuse me I need to change my Tampon!

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by curiousgeorge on Sept 4, 2008 18:49:48 GMT 1, Pud some of longest standing members here are blatant flippers, but pretend to be something different. That gets up my nose more than flipping, cos they often point the finger at other people
Just an observation but you often jump on 'outsiders' for selling stuff, while long standing members usually get threads bumped or good luck etc,etc

Fair point, but I am jumping on the blatent mis-use of the forum, lots of us buy and sell within our community.
I realise that some on here have made a profit or sold to buy new over a long period of time, but this guy has joined up simply to gain info about how to market a Banksy print that he only bought to make a profit, and he stopped many people who wanted this print for their walls from getting it.
Jeeeez I feel like I am speaking a different language here, I thought/ think he is taking a liberty.
I am starting to think that this forum's whole way of thinking has changed, and not for the better, the community that was has died and no wonder so many of the original contributors and artists have left. Such a shame!
EVERYTHING I OWN IS NOW FOR SALE, NO SENSIBLE OFFER REFUSED - you know what I have, pm me if interested!

Can you remind us of what you've got please PUD
In your defence, I agree that the forum is used in the wrong way by many and with a bit of luck your 'harassment' will stop it being clogged up by loads of new members simply signing up to get advice as to how to make the most profit from a print that is bought with that sole purpose.
I would also say that there is a massive difference between buying with the sole intention of selling to make a profit and selling a couple of years down the line in order to shuffle your collection or move up the so-called ladder (which curiousgeorge is what many of the more established members do ... whilst contributing a lot to the forum in the meantime).

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by Richard on Sept 4, 2008 19:27:43 GMT 1, I think the forum should welcome those who shuffle with the ultimate intention of getting better art - not those in it solely for financial gain.
However, it depends on what they bring to the forum I guess!

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by curiousgeorge on Sept 4, 2008 19:42:35 GMT 1, Why is it that 'better art' is always worth a shitload more than what people started with??
Serious question btw
I disagree with a massive difference between selling quickly and the longer option, a difference yes, but not a massive one

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by graeme501 on Sept 4, 2008 19:49:30 GMT 1, its because when 'better art' is cheap, there is no need to raise the extra money by selling art, so its never mentioned
in my instance, im selling two prints to fund a large scale original commission

Appreciate the advice in point 1 Pud - hadnt thought of that - I've mainly bought on ebay and only only sold one thing (a GAA poster) so wouldn't have copped on to the identity theft thing. Phoned the bro (1600 posts on here) there now and he says your actually not the p*ick you came across to me as and that you're usually a nice guy as did two of the 6pms who wanted to buy or swap the sas. Not now selling it, other bro in Cavan is getting it, hes going to frame it, hang it and enjoy it (like I said the image now does nothing for me), lend me ยฃ1k for my kitchen and give it back for the same amount if I ever fancy retrieving it.
I'm not sure if my three posts on here were giving me enough time to impart any knowledge - maybe I'll be of some use to someone later down the line. I registered to learn from you and others and engage with like-minded printlovers. Maybe discussing ebay and trading on the ebay/trading thread was some kind of social faux-pas only known to passport control on this forum.
When I say Kinda accidently bought it, I was only noseying on the Santas Ghetto site not intending to buy anything, it appeared, managed to get it in my basket, phoned my brother who has a fair few Banksys and he told me I'd be a tube not to buy it. 2. They are generally filthy flippers who only bought the f**king print to make a quick buck and the muppets are s**t scared incase POW check their records and refuse future purchases. So if you don't want to have your Banksy copied/forged and if it is your intention of flipping a print in the future to make a quick buck I suggest you leave the number off. To add insult to injury you register on here with zero f**king knowledge and then have the outright cheek to ask for advice on how's the best way to flip your print! Love people like you mate, you will go down a storm here bud! Good luck with your print, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole! Appreciate the advice in point 1 Pud - hadnt thought of that - I've mainly bought on ebay and only only sold one thing (a GAA poster) so wouldn't have copped on to the identity theft thing. Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by bobbyt23 on Sept 4, 2008 22:16:39 GMT 1, I think it is just a raw nerve to most when a newbie is only asking with regards to money. Get involved and people will not seem so bad.
Who's your bro on here?

Sorry, bad day.
If it's any consolation my statement was more sweeping than it appeared, although aimed at you it was more about this being common place and the wrong people using this forum for all the wrong reasons.
I stand by my comments however I remove the inference that I was directing them to you personally!

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by seidbereit on Sept 6, 2008 13:53:30 GMT 1, <sigh>
Right, as some in this thread have asked elwheel who his forum-member brother is, the answer is that I am. I've just returned from a business trip where I wasn't easy to reach, otherwise I could have answered all of his questions myself to save him making the serious Banksy forum errors of:
a) Joining in the first place b) Using his first post to request a little simple advice
It never ceases to amaze me how a new member making his first post on any other forum on the internet - whether it be to ask a beginner's question or not (and I would guess that 95% of opening posts on specialist forums are used to do precisely that) - would normally expect to receive, and in probably 99% of cases, would indeed receive something which closely resembles a civil response, yet this forum, on the other hand, seems to be the only one which makes a ritual of (and indeed revels in) doing precisely the opposite.
I particularly liked this example of the brainless back-slapping that this forum seems to foster in hlarmy's comment to PUD above:
"I agree that the forum is used in the wrong way by many and with a bit of luck your 'harassment' will stop it being clogged up by loads of new members simply signing up to get advice as to how to make the most profit from a print that is bought with that sole purpose."
Good work, Batman.
Elwheel (which is not a street tag or the like, it's merely a forum name) is an extremely talented artist in his own right. He studied and graduated in fine art from a university hugely respected in this faculty. Since then he has worked in a community project in West Belfast in which, among many other similar projects, many of the more paramilitary style murals (which - in the light of the political changes there - had become unwanted or unnecessary reminders of the country's past) were replaced under his leadership and with his artistic input by more "socially-acceptable" street art works with the hard work carried out by the local under-priveleged youth he has helped, over the last 9 or 10 years to turn into upstanding gents, through imparting an interest in art and other cultural pursuits where their other possible future lay in becoming the neighbourhood's general hoodlums. It is incidentally this youth project contract which he refers to in his opening post as coming to an end in March.
His knowledge of art and his ability to conduct a sensible discussion/debate on it is something I would never question, but then I know him personally. You gave him one post and then decided. You could have tested his opinions on Konrad Klapheck, or Sigmar Polke, or on Frank Kosik posters or on an uncountable number of other art-related topics, but you didn't and won't be doing so in the future either.
There are simply too many users here who are too quick to treat every outsider, first and foremost as an unwanted and unneeded pest, yet too slow to realise how crassly they overestimate the worth of their own contribution and thus are themselves often the reason why this forum is so often found wanting when it comes to discussion of any real substance.
Flann O'Brien worded it perfectly:
Put a thief among honest men and they will eventually relieve him of his watch.
Laters.
<sigh>

Newbie here - probably stupid questions, by brun on Sept 6, 2008 23:38:31 GMT 1, i guess it was the "should i sell or wait a year for the kitchen?" remark that didnt go down so well ! it looks like you are only into the cash and seek the advice of others with greater knowledge .......none of us actually know what is happening in the art market , and bansky's works have inflated prices cos of people like yourself who just bought on a whim ...........whats more important ? the bansky or the fitted kitchen ? i am guilty of buying a aiko pow print and could do with a sofa instead
