Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by Criminal Mischief on Mar 1, 2017 7:39:39 GMT 1, showing total of $162,500 Is hammer 162k for and unsigned canvas! I viewed the work in person, it had his name stenciled on the side of the canvas.
Damn, I personally had my eye on the Barry McGee, Kaws, and a very nice Scott Campbell piece they had up for grabs but opted to exercise restraint

Is tagged but not signed! Is not the same.... Is and unsigned banksy canvas! People's pay the same money for canvas signed than unsigned.

Signatures on originals add little or no value in my world. The only time its relevant to me is when the artist has made it an integral part of their artwork as a Faile or Futura signature might be for some people.
Loads of originals I own or have owned from Barry McGee to OSG are not signed on the front or back. I believe both these artists rarely sign originals.
I would go as far as to say that on an original if an artist must sign their work I would rather it was on the back of work. I have a DOLK punk canvas that is signed and number on the front and it annoys me every time I look at it because its not obscure.
The concept of value of a signature my have some weight with respect to authenticity or provenance but I do not really buy into that as you can fake a signature easier than an original painting.
Value of a signature does come into play for an editioned signed print. The perceived value being that the artist has actually touched the print.
Of course that's before you even start to question whether they sign the prints themselves. Then again not all originals are painting or produced by the artist, but that's a whole other debate.

Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by Harveyn on Mar 1, 2017 18:04:51 GMT 1, Was thinking the same Had Plastic Jesus put out the same image, everyone would bes**tting on it
surely you take in account when this piece was created, understand what the artist was doing in that period and look aesthetically at the piece too? Rather than just take it on face value?
Obviously an artist just biting and doing similar now, over a decade later would gets**t? It's a trope that's done and as Banksy himself as done, you move on and push yourself.
The biggest criticism of a number of artists now...mentioning no names...is they simply haven't pushed on but continue to do the same tired tropes Banksy as already done years and years and years ago
I always find this dilemma interesting. Its my belief when faced with a work by an artist that's potentially inferior to more recent work or just simply not as good its impossible for the body of work that you are aware of and appreciate not to influence your opinion of said piece.
I actually quite like this Banksy canvas but I am also aware that I am influenced by my overall opinion of the artists work and the impact it has on me.
Its sort of how I explain in my head why someone will pay a reasonable amount of money for a doodle by Andy Warhol on a scrap of paper.
I am sure its part of the reason the buyer of this 12"x9" canvas by Basquiat just paid $125k.

Anyway Banksy gets his artist resale rights commission of 5% or whatever it is.

Market cooling? Time will tell. I do not think these parabolic increases can be rationally expected to continue.
