I can assure you it’s not by design we are curating the sales amongst the works we are being offered. Feel free to let me know what you’d like to see more of? I’m always keen to expand the breadth of work we bring to the market.

What is tending to happen is that people see results on works they own and think I’d take that for mine and get in touch.

We currently do 4 “Live” auctions which are larger in lot numbers 200-300 approx and are “all platform” sales

We then have 4 Artsy only timed sales with 100-200 lots

I understand you cannot please everyone, we have lots of buyers who are buying ephemera and certificated works so whilst I accept it may not be completely to your liking there is a very strong level of interest in these works.

The sale has been live for 3 days and 52/112 lots have buying bids on them already which is a record for one of these sales.

Im not saying one is worse then the other, its just that no one has time to sit around for hours to place a bid. As dive said, its probably best in separate auctions. I know you're very fond of your Peckham rocks.

I bought a piece at last auction. The presale and sale experience was excellent. The valuer/condition expert spent a lot of time discussing condition of piece and how to think about value of piece, how to frame it etc.

My only frustration was how poorly the collection process was where the depot did not help in the packaging of a multiple K piece of art. They didn’t seem to care how it would be transported. This needs to be fixed.

I agree with this. I also always wondered why auctions weren't operated on an ascending estimate scale. Starting off small and building up to the bigger ticket items. That way you could tune in for the first 30 minutes or the last hour etc. I always find it strange seeing something sell for £20k, then the next lot is £72.

Is it just me or are some of these auctions fishy?? How can a Peckham rock have so many bids and be at £600 plus fees so £750 ish when there are loads for sale on ebay with receipts and packaging for £250. Same with some of their posters, I notice it time and time again - why would you buy from an auction house with these prices? Are friends of the sellers or auction houses bidding them up artificially ? It really puts me off from ever buying through one!!

Not everyone searches on eBay. Or on artist websites.
They just see it in the auction, want it and want to win....

I've sold many, many items on Catawiki that are readily available elsewhere.
Just now a Invader Bilbao book was posted that was sold for 200, which is still available for 15.

People are lazy. It's wonderful.

Also people like the reassurance of checked by an auction house, vs the wilds of Ebay. Ebay is fine for some art buyers, but is not for everyone.

I guess but still seems very weird to me, I’d get for example the Peckham rock at £100 more maybe but triple the price just seems mental. I’m sure that ebay ( not that it’s everything) is much more recognised than some of these small auction houses. The people so called bidding on items ( I am talking about the cheap stuff not prints as I own high end pieces and prob would run those through a gallery) must be living under a rock which doesn’t add up to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah, also in general Germans don't look on eBay.CO.UK. UKans don't look on eBay.DE.

Years ago I sold non-art items I bought on DE for 12 euro and then sold them on CO.UK for 100....
Finally there was an advantage for learning German and English.

Auctions are not about items or prices. They are about ego's.
When you have no big ego's bidding you get an avarage result on your listing.
With 1 big ego you get a good result.

But when you get 2 big ego's bidding your item.... you bring out the popcorn.

yeah fair play I see your point about the different ebay website origins and def about egos! Maybe I was brought up to value the money I earn a little more because I wouldn’t give a hot damn if someone knew I paid a ridiculous amount for something, in fact the reverse as I would think they think me a moron 🤣🤣

In my experience auctions are usually about items and prices. 😀 But yeah when you get people who really want that piece, it’s gonna be a ride.

exactly what I was thinking, I have researched this and it definitely should have a strong dark smoke like this - there was a thread about it here with the photos of fake and genuine next to each other. Been hearing more and more sinister things going on with this and other auction houses! Buyers beware

I am of a slightly different opinion - I used to have one years ago and I thought the smoke was lighter with a few gaps in it. But either way there seem to be an original and a fake - the difference is in the smoke but we seem to have different opinions on which is the fake one!

Just so everyone is aware bidding is exclusively via Artsy and you must Pre register to bid so please do that as early as possible. You’ll need to photo your ID and send a picture of yourself for AML regulations. The process works best on a phone I’m told.
