Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by sfnyc on Dec 10, 2020 22:45:09 GMT 1, Beware of French customs, they re notorious for damaging works on paper. Have it more than fully insured and honestly it would be best to fly these in person.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by JFCC on Dec 10, 2020 22:46:12 GMT 1, I just used FedX for the first time this month to bring some signed Banksy prints in to the UK and to be fair they were absolutely excellent and astonishingly quick!
The pieces were super well packaged and secure, they dealt with customs etc - absolutely first rate. I insured them through my household/art policy with Chubb.
Flight Logistics are equally brilliant but I have not used them from the USA.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by mlwells04 on Dec 11, 2020 1:02:56 GMT 1, I have used Flight Logistics for a US to UK shipment. It wasn't quite as valuable, only $10k but they were great and everything was fully insured. I believe they used DHL Express on this side of the pond, not sure who ended up delivering it to the buyer.

Flight logistics is the way to go. Not sure if Steve is still there but you should ask for him. Top Notch. Never had an issue.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by John The Badgers on Dec 23, 2020 12:18:49 GMT 1, I'm sure there's a 'Good dealings with' thread, but in typical style, cant find it.
Wanted to mention Fragilistics here in the UK?
I bought a framed piece from a gallery in that London Town, wanted it delivering to me here in Shropshire.
The Gallery gave me a quote, and after I explained that I hadn't just fallen out of a tree, said I would sort this.
Have dealt with Fragilistics before when Mister Frame Man has framed items for me, he uses them.
Had a quote (very reasonable) from them, and then they basically sorted everything. They collected last Saturday after liaising with the gallery, had a narrow collection window, but all good, they then safely delivered to me yesterday.
The service was brilliant, communication excellent, and the systems they have in place to advise on delivery times etc, first rate. Even notified me when the driver (nice fella) was an hour away.
I would certainly recommend them if you are thinking of shipping anything 'fragile' around the UK, cant rate them highly enough.

Flight logistics still remains my number one option for shipping artworks in general.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by Hubble Bubble on Dec 31, 2020 10:50:07 GMT 1, Just an update on this in case it's of any help to folk going forward...
I had three quotes
Sotheby's - $1500 plus $151 insurance Flight Logistics - £920 plus £185 insurance British Shop - £1390 plus £206 insurance
My domestic art policy covers art in transit when packed and transported by a recognised carrier so I was able to deduct insurance from all quotes. Using a dollar price of £1 = £1.32 as it was at that point, the quotes looked like this...
Sotheby's £ 1136 Flight Logistics £920 British Shop £1390
So I went for Flight Logistics and the service was fabulous. Seamless integration with Sotheby's, great communications and - given Covid etc - a speedy delivery. The packing was first class... I'll try to post some pics... and paperwork very simple. FL handled customs for me which I simply paid direct (5% as it should be, none of that paying more and trying to claim back business).
So, all in all, very pleased and happy to have gone through the process as an exercise. Hope it helps.
Gratuitous pic of unwrapped piece for those interested.

I am shipping a package with flight logistics from US to UK and deciding if I should insure the art or not. It would be about $1,200 to insure and is shipping with DHL.
How do you think about insurance? Thanks in advance!

The buyer should always be made whole. They either receive the purchased piece or their money back. It's the sellers responsibility to make the buyer financially whole. Unless another deal has been agreed upon.
Insurance would cover your potential financial loss as a seller.

(see my prior posts)) Especially if your insurance is $1,200 ... the insurance value must be in the mid to high 5 figures ... At the end of the day it's a small price to pay for peace of mind ... and when you see the delivery folks throwing your precious art around

If you're selling stuff you should factor the cost of insurance into the shipping costs you charge.

Depending on what it is, price you paid ... very hard to prove replacement value to insurance companies (again depends on what it is)

Say for example my Nick Smith Simpsons print which I paid £595 for. There are several on eBay from £1485 upwards. Would an insurer accept this as proof of replacement value should I insure it for that figure rather than the price I paid? What would they require to be satisfied that they’re not being swindled. Past auction results etc, listings in galleries etc?

You insure it for the price it would cost to replace it.

Definitely with Morfx Mrizzle,
It would be the cost to replace it.
I queried this point with Hiscox, and they advised they would use things like current auction results etc to determine what they would pay out.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, by John The Badgers on Jan 20, 2021 19:46:23 GMT 1, Hello! I am shipping a package with flight logistics from US to UK and deciding if I should insure the art or not. It would be about $1,200 to insure and is shipping with DHL. How do you think about insurance? Thanks in advance!
As I am old and very cynical, and wouldn't trust an insurance company as far as I could throw them, I would be all over the DHL insurance cover just so that its making sure you are properly covered?
Are there any clauses on the packing, pre-pick up condition, excesses? What's the delivery policy, proof of delivery etc? I would just want it nailed down, especially as you are paying such a premium.
Hope all works out for you.

If that's not the case then DHL are taking the piss and you need to cover it via another insurance provider.
