Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by Deleted on Mar 16, 2020 22:12:28 GMT 1, This is more like 9/11, less like 2008-9 Market will recover by the end of the year. heavily indebted companies will be weeded out but such is life. It depends on how long we have to ride this out. I donโt see how this wonโt be a fairly long term issue. I imagine weโll see some long term travel bans and restrictions to potential hot zones like Africa that will have a hard time curtailing there spread. Any travel restrictions will kneecap the global markets full potential. Weโre in the eye of this storm. Weโve yet to see the full impact of its destruction to be able to draw a conclusion on its long term effects. I imagine once companies begin reporting first quarter earnings, weโll see a further drop. Also, largest expense in companies is labor. Layoffs will cause further panic and also stunt growth. I donโt see how companies arenโt already looking at how to cut to stop the bleeding. Governments across the world will need to champion incentives for companies or even penalize companies that lay-off during covid-19 to slow further market declines. Real talk. My wife just went to Walmart trying to find baby formula as we couldnโt find ANY over the weekend and are low and police were there guarding toilet paper. This is quite another animal...
I hope some escape

Iโm sure there was shill bidders in that auction hyping his market. I have to be honest - some of those hammer prices are beyond dubious, especially with fees added on. Well, at least on paper, my entire collection is now worth a lot more than it was! The Hirst "LSD" spots also went for what I think is an insane amount (judging what I have been offered privately in the recent past) Hmmmmmmmm....... Yeah lsd was stupid, I mean ยฃ17k for a posh poster from a big edition. Iโd be surprised if that was shill bidding tough, Iโm not saying Hirst doesnโt do it but Iโd imagine it would be ogs and more high profile sales. I think that price was two rich idiots bored at being locked in doors.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by Horatio Nelson on Mar 17, 2020 22:22:32 GMT 1, I have a Rampage print myself and was following this with interest, including the pre-auction bids.
The 16k hammer price is absolutely absurd and canโt be a genuine result. The print is obviously long since sold out (and I think one of his much better pieces), but any collector with half a brain and some patience could source one of these outside the auction houses for no more than ยฃ5-6k tops, and certainly not into five figures.
Did anyone see the price go up in real time? (Just to make sure not a typo...)

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by Horatio Nelson on Mar 17, 2020 23:07:47 GMT 1, I saw it at around 3,500 the day before (ex premium), which is what I thought it would sell at.
I was actually getting ready to call up the insurers with updated portfolio valuation as I had three or so pieces which featured in this sale, but I would be an idiot to declare/pay a premium on my Shrigley based on a ยฃ16k valuation, because it simply isn't worth that. One of the other prints I have is Hodgkin's Ice, which sold at a very very low price and is probably worth more.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by lv90210 on Mar 23, 2020 11:55:24 GMT 1, Looks like it is now a storage of wealth That makes sense, over the last 3/4 years we've seen different people come into the market, people that are rich.
Dow down 25%, Cable getting f*cked daily isn't going to panic sell these people, I would say what we're seeing at Sothebys is the opposite, they're loading up.
What will be interesting given the levels at Sothebys (although the superior Banksy auction house) already will be where the Forum levels settle tomorrow.

I've not heard ยฃ70k, I have heard ยฃ68k.... could be a wasteman bedroom wannabe B dealer adding ยฃ2k on top of that which wouldn't surprise me.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by Poster Bob on Mar 23, 2020 13:30:42 GMT 1, This will be worse than both of them combined
The 2008-2009 recession did cut Banksy print values by more than half, but I guess his position was not a blue-chip artist back then. At the same time, none of the smaller economic / stock market dips since 2010 affected the performance of Banksy prints. Hard to say how the situation will develop, but itโs hard to see that there would be completely no impact as discretionary spend declines and at the same time speculative buyers hold off and wait to see how it moves. My guess would be a flattening our or a small correction that could lay path to sustainable future growth in value. This is more like 9/11, less like 2008-9 Market will recover by the end of the year. heavily indebted companies will be weeded out but such is life.ย

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by Fast Eddie on Mar 23, 2020 15:14:36 GMT 1, Markets are expected to lose 40% relative to February's peak (this is GS forecast). The crisis in the US is at the start of a very steep ascent in the number of cases. US unemployment figures are going to be record-setting bad. Industrial production, probably the same, and not just for a quarter. At least two or three. To me it looks like, now it is not a time to take big risks if you do not absolutely have to.
