Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by esfer on Mar 23, 2020 15:45:09 GMT 1, I am thinking the long term effects of this could hugely change/damage parts of the art market. I think it could include some currently emerging artists going completely away, and some with actual art careers may also take years to recover. Artists who’s pricing was WAY out of whack with their relative output and experience (Javier Calleja as example), might have difficulty maintaining the prices they have quickly rocketed up to in a very short period of time, then taking too long to correct their price point for global recession, thinking they can “wait it out”, using the proceeds of the windfall they received right before this disaster hit, to maintain their lifestyle over until the economy recovers. But if people don’t feel safe spending 5k for a heretofore unknown artist (non blue-chip) artist, those artists careers could suffer greatly, and might never actually recover. Those who do choose art to park their wealth into, will purchase well known bank(sy)able artists, rather than artists who seemed like a great “future” investment prior to the global recession that is sure to hit later this year. I guarantee you the IMF is shi¥¥ing their pants at how bad things are projected to be post Covid 19.
I think the reason people park their money into gold and precious metals is because they are easy to liquidate for the going rate that day....but there isn’t the same kind of globally agreed “going rate” in the art world, there is only the potential price and the actual price something sells for, which is based 100% on what a buyer is willing to pay.
Having said as much, for those with deep and steady pockets, there will soon be art available to buy, some at steep discounts.
I hope I am wrong!

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by esfer on Mar 23, 2020 15:48:02 GMT 1, Markets are expected to lose 40% relative to February's peak (this is GS forecast). The crisis in the US is at the start of a very steep ascent in the number of cases. US unemployment figures are going to be record-setting bad. Industrial production, probably the same, and not just for a quarter. At least two or three. To me it looks like, now it is not a time to take big risks if you do not absolutely have to.
Absolutely agreed.

Has anyone here asked Sotheby’s about that? Or does it mean someone famous is selling it? Probably although I’m sure they have a broad definition of important. Could be as important as the runner up of the 6th series of big brother.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by singerstu on Mar 25, 2020 0:52:46 GMT 1, Unless I read it wrong condition 11 allows the buyer to cancel the purchase within 14 days. I am not sure if that’s correct and I have not checked every lot but most lots say clause 11 does not apply. However the exclusion does not apply to lot 13. Not sure why that is but it feels a bit odd.
I am happy to be corrected if that’s not the case.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by moron on Mar 25, 2020 1:24:10 GMT 1, Markets are expected to lose 40% relative to February's peak (this is GS forecast). Or it’s exactly the time to be taking risks. It’s times like this that fortunes are made and lost, if you survive this and buy well over the coming months regardless of the market you’re in you can clean up. Not for everyone but the wealthiest people I know made their money during crisis. Of course it helps if people are very wealthy during a crisis. People without much money are often desperate and end up under selling just to survive.
I'm sure there is no shortage of these financial vultures these days.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by LJCal on Mar 25, 2020 1:42:04 GMT 1, Or it’s exactly the time to be taking risks. These vultures have been around forever

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by kfroms on Mar 25, 2020 10:06:56 GMT 1, Unless I read it wrong condition 11 allows the buyer to cancel the purchase within 14 days. I am not sure if that’s correct and I have not checked every lot but most lots say clause 11 does not apply. However the exclusion does not apply to lot 13. Not sure why that is but it feels a bit odd. I am happy to be corrected if that’s not the case. You are right - it is statutory right to cancel any online purchase within 14 days, no 'reason' needed. So you can drive prices up, win the item, and then cancel.
Market manipulation at its best as the gullible ones are happy to believe all auction results.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by kfroms on Mar 25, 2020 12:48:22 GMT 1, Not sure but given that any 'cancellation' of the sale would happen several days after the actual sale I assume that most have accepted the quoted price as 'true'.
