Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by robo on Mar 18, 2021 18:58:51 GMT 1, Ran the figures on the banksy-value.com index. The overall index is very strong at +11.88% but largely driven by a small number of prints doing really well and rest being average.
Good analysis.
Is this rise based just off this auction?
What happens if you separate by signed and unsigned? Or even signed and one-offs?

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by dirtypete on Mar 18, 2021 19:08:17 GMT 1, You’re probably right. I can only theorise that a few bidders missed out on the different colourway TM and then FOMO took them into a bidding war on the vanilla version.
I’d be surprised if this was the new market price, but who knows!

Christies later this month will be a good indicator

I'm fortunate to have a Banksy, and some Bitcoin. I'm going to have to sell one or the other though at some point to put towards a deposit on a flat. Bitcoin has greater upside potential, it seems, but Banksy less likely to totally crash, unless he's involved in some scandal...

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by sgolby on Mar 18, 2021 23:49:02 GMT 1, I can’t believe people are talking about these results being weak. These are pieces of paper, mostly in multiples, selling for 2 to 3 times what they were going for just 2 years ago. If you think they are weak, please sell your banksy’s and use the money for a psychiatrist.

The problem is so many people claiming to know the market are talking silly prices , so when they aren't achieved it's deemed to be a weak auction. I think if you paid £500 for a print and it achieves £100,000+ in 10 years that's a bloody good result. Just don't read too much into the bullshit prices being mention on here, usually people who own the print, and are looking after an investment.

Oh, i agree. Believe me, i hate that i had to sell two of my prints to survive financially, so when i see people bellyaching about the “weak prices,” i think to myself banksy should do morons V2, about the ridiculousness of his “market fans” these days.

Greed sets in, in some cases and individuals can become hostile to protect their investments. Private sales will be latest auction price inc fees +5% a week later now. As you quote 2-3 times a price rise in a short period and more with some other prints, the market has been a straight increase constantly for a good few years now, you would think owners would be grateful with any rises as long as they have not dipped

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by sgolby on Mar 19, 2021 0:35:21 GMT 1, tab1 . I agree completely. When i get sad about selling my prints it is not because i wish I made more. It is because i know i will never be able to afford to buy them back and I truly loved them. I know some, many of you think that is weak or stupid, but it’s the truth.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by ab3 on Mar 19, 2021 8:53:21 GMT 1, Few things spring to mind here reading the comments.
Supply and demand for one.
If there are eight buyers for a GWRB and only one being sold, the price is going to be high. If there are eight buyers and 3 or 4 (like this year already) GWRB, the price will probably be lower.
Also remember that 'there is no loss in making a profit' for those of you who did sell in the past. You were probably pretty happy with what you got and thinking you could have got more now will only lead down a dark road and not do you any good.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by kentkid on Mar 19, 2021 10:14:19 GMT 1, I’m actually surprised the prices have remained so high, although it’s good to see of course!
I know very little about these things, but I would have thought the flooding of the market over the last few months would have led to a natural decline in prices realised, as there appears to be multiple opportunities per month to acquire a whole host of Banksy prints.
For example, I would think a Turf War would fetch a really good price at the moment. Not based on anything more than the fact we haven’t seen one available at auction for a while. To many, it’s not one of Banksy’s most desirable prints, but I would expect it to command a good price due to it’s relative lack of availability.
I just checked www.banksy-value.com/, and there have been 6 unsigned Happy Chopper prints available at buy at auction since the last unsigned Turf War print was sold at auction.
Does scarcity lead to a higher price?
It would be interesting to see the prices achieved if there was just one auction for Banksy prints every 3 or 6 months, as you would then have more people interested in the upcoming sale. At the moment, potential buyers can afford to miss out on a Banksy print as they’ll likely get another opportunity to buy again in a couple of weeks. I guess this isn’t going to happen anytime soon though, as people are quite rightly looking to cash-in for life changing amounts of money.
Just my thoughts, and a little disclaimer: I own an unsigned Happy Chopper, but not an unsigned Turf War - although I very nearly bought one for £8k around 5 years ago but thought it was too expensive at the time. Oh well, we live and learn!
Either way, anyone fortunate enough to own a Banksy print should consider themselves very lucky - I know I do.

Seems like a signed happy choppers and a signed LIITA were both pulled from Sotheby’s in that case, likely due to Pest Control concerns. Both editions are appearing in the Christies auction though.
