Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Graham H on Mar 13, 2020 12:42:50 GMT 1, Such a simplistic view... If only it were that easy...
I think the British gov need to do more, cancel big events and ban big gatherings. Close down London underground which is like a cesspit and shut down the schools from now until the end of Easter hols. Businesses can let people work from home.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by GMA on Mar 13, 2020 12:51:58 GMT 1, Disagree if you want, you're all entitled to your own opinion. That's what I think needs to happen. A month of disruption to delay the spread would be better than just letting people carry on. We'll see over the next few weeks what impact this decision has had.

At least in many major cities. Public schools and universities in many areas have closed. Almost all professional sports have been on hold. Business have been asked to have their employees to work remotely from home. Pretty active prevention measures taking place here currently.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by moron on Mar 13, 2020 13:24:37 GMT 1, I think both Italian and my government are reacting late. I don’t know about France and Germany, their growing rate is smaller than ours. And I’m afraid British government is doing things late too. They should already had started making hard things because it’s too late In reality what else can any government do?
For every recorded person who has contracted Covid and is alive there is probably a hundred or more people who have it and have not been recorded.
People still need to go to work and buy food etc.
Hospitals are over whelmed in some countries and the virus can stay active on some surfaces for nine days.
In reality I would not be surprised if behind the scenes, some governments take the view to let the Covid run it's course knowing the measures so far taken will not prevent it spreading. Just lessen the spreading to a degree.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Graham H on Mar 13, 2020 13:25:16 GMT 1, Its nothing to do with agreeing or disagreeing.. I was merely stating that it isnt just so simple as closing everything down and sending people home to work..
Heres just one example to consider.. what about all those DPD and courrier drivers who deliver all our internet purchases.. food, tablets, health products and other such life saving things.. so what happens if we just tell them to work from home...
It is going to take flexibility and thought rather than just carte blanche sweeping decisions that could also have life saving / changing impacts
We all dont work in the city of London...

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by moron on Mar 13, 2020 13:30:13 GMT 1, This is an interesting article.
"Lab-Made Coronavirus Triggers Debate The creation of a chimeric SARS-like virus has scientists discussing the risks of gain-of-function research."

Ralph Baric, an infectious-disease researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, last week (November 9) published a study on his team’s efforts to engineer a virus with the surface protein of the SHC014 coronavirus, found in horseshoe bats in China, and the backbone of one that causes human-like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in mice. The hybrid virus could infect human airway cells and caused disease in mice, according to the team’s results, which were published in Nature Medicine.

I think yesterday the experts gave very good reasons as to why they’re doing what they’re doing. The Prime Minister can only act on the advice of experts.

World : the only successful containment method is shutdown and isolation immediately. See you in a few weeks
Britain : our experts with no experience of fast spreading respiratory viruses beg to differ. See you at the football later !

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by wrigs on Mar 13, 2020 13:48:45 GMT 1, Not sure how the Americans have turned this into a political argument and I’m not sure the conspiracy theory’s help at the present time.
The UK governments response in large basically states we know loads of people are going to get it but let’s see if we can push that out over a greater period to ease the strain on the NHS.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by irl1 on Mar 13, 2020 13:53:44 GMT 1, So our government want 'herd immunity' to allow around 60% of the UK population to get the virus incase the virus hits stronger in the winter. Around 3% of this number could potentially die, that's about 1.2 million deaths. Ok, let's carry on, happy days! Panic buying in supermarkets with people fighting over jacks rolls its mad!
An extra 350 police working in supermarket carparks to control the traffic.
Mind you nearly everything in Ireland is cancelled with all schools closed which i think is a good thing

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Mar 13, 2020 13:54:03 GMT 1, yes me! it is not an easy moment over here at the moment. i live near venice in the north est of italy. from yesterday we are not allowed to go outside of our house. if you need to ( grocery, pharmacy or doctor) you need to write an auto certificate with proof you need to go there otherwise if the police stop you will get a 200 eu ticket. bar , cinema restaurant and every place is closed down. At the moment you are not even allowed to take a walk outside. unrealistic situation, hopefully will end soon Awful, I hope it ends soon, it's getting out of hand. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_evolution
It it will get worse , fatality rates will increase

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Mar 13, 2020 14:05:46 GMT 1, I think both Italian and my government are reacting late. I don’t know about France and Germany, their growing rate is smaller than ours. And I’m afraid British government is doing things late too. They should already had started making hard things because it’s too late
www.theguardian.com/society/2016/feb/01/ageing-britain-two-fifths-nhs-budget-spent-over-65s
The virus as as it stands solves an issue for the government clearing some debt this age group that is effected the most their retirement age was 50 , working life for state contributed pensions 20 years, many have been in retirement Over 30 years out stripping the contributions and now seen as a drain on the state, the other line the government may be waiting for school holidays to commence before restrictions put in place so less financial impact . unless restrictions put in globally the virus will just keep on evolving and get worse .

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Graham H on Mar 13, 2020 14:13:28 GMT 1, So..other than making a snap decision and closing everything down and sending everyone home from work, what more can they do?
I dont have the answer.. but all im asking for is a balanced approach, which is what they seem to be doing.. Every single action will have a further reaction.. as can be seen from just the simple toilet roll situation ( which quite frankly just shows what an idiotic mindset a proportion of the population has..) but also shows an example of something unpredicted that will happen if and when things are messaged to the country..
All im saying is that having a little time to think and consider before acting, and being balanced about those actions will stop chaotic scenes..
We all dont work in the city of London... Neither do I, nor do I live there. My overall point is that the Gov, isn't doing enough. Time will tell I guess. I hope it all sorts itself out, but for now, I'm not convinced.

Worse case 8 out of 10 will get it. As it's a novel virus, as a population we need to develop immunity so if it evolves and comes back we'll be more protected. They don't know the R0 number for it yet, it's mutating and spreading rapidly around the globe.

What ever logical and reasonable approach may be placed not everyone will process the information the same, interpretation of information released is not balanced ,examples of different approach across each country ,
prime example your comment , you feel a balanced approach by uk gov whilst others view as a chaotic approach.
if no vaccine is developed soon and the virus morphs in a few months then there will be chaos , at present even if all restrictions put in place the spread can not be contained as the symptoms take a week to show and by then the contaminated person has spread to many untold persons
the only way at the moment to help stop the spread is to have home testing kits given out nationally then self isolate immediately would help rather than the long wait at present which at the moment is impossible to implement
it would be a cheaper option to develop home kits than following Italy's course of action

Its no wonder that people are acting irrationally really

They can, or they must, do like Chinese How can you allow things like (and that’s only Spain) - Closing university in Madrid with a high spreading rate and the very same day many young (and some of them infected) people going back to their hometowns or going to parties at night - Allowing mass concentrations - Closing football matches but joining a lot of people to support from outside the stadium. Or traveling to Liverpool (you shouldn’t have let them in)
One of the biggest problems, besides the spreading, is the increasing rate. Hospitals in Madrid are already collapsed. And if it goes harder there will b no possibility of attending people. There are rumors than in Madrid and in Italy have to choose which patient takes the breathing machine. The old one is who doesn’t get it and goes to increase the numbers...
This is serious. Governments must react extremely hard or thousands and thousands will die at each country

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by urbanwear on Mar 13, 2020 14:41:51 GMT 1, Any forum members currently living in Italy? I'm from Italy, Trieste north east near the Slovenia border, it's a nightmare, everything is shut down, shopping malls, restaurants, shops, bars, cinemas are closed till 25th march, schools and universities till 3rd of April.
Only things that are open are grocery, markets, pharmacy, doctor and banks, but you have to queue up at a meter of distance and enter one at a time. Pubblic transportation is working with a reduced timetable.
You cannot stroll around (only for essential needs) € 206 fine, state borders have been shut down, some airports are closing, large factories and production is staring to shut down.
Police are patrolling the streets and controlling the reason you are not home, civil protection cars are driving around the city with recorded messages announcing to STAY HOME.
The cities seem "ghost towns", it's hard, it's disorienting, the atmosphere is so surreal.
IMHO coronavirus will cause a global recession, let's hope it ends soon.

It seems like Korea and China are already seeing numbers drop, hopefully this thing peters itself out with proper testing and common sense.
China has around 80K confirmed cases. I think the Media spins this out of control and is a huge part of the issue. I coughed yesterday and someone reported it to HR because they were scared. The fear factor is worse than the virus. If you have an underlying issue or are considered in the high risk age bracket you should take more caution.
The US media saying they project 70% of us to catch it, which seems ridiculous when China is already on the downward trend. We just need to get tests, anti virals ect going and hopefully spring/summer slow it down even more.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Mar 13, 2020 15:12:52 GMT 1, ' if no vaccine is developed soon and the virus morphs in a few months then there will be chaos ' ..realistically, its comments like this with no substantiated fact to back that up that are helping to make a situation worse.. Daily and hourly now we are hearing from many people coming out with statements and comments and supposed actions and doomsday scenarios in the media with minimal or no level of expertise Its no wonder that people are acting irrationally really What ever logical and reasonable approach may be placed not everyone will process the information the same, interpretation of information released is not balanced ,examples of different approach across each country , prime example your comment , you feel a balanced approach by uk gov whilst others view as a chaotic approach. if no vaccine is developed soon and the virus morphs in a few months then there will be chaos , at present even if all restrictions put in place the spread can not be contained as the symptoms take a week to show and by then the contaminated person has spread to many untold persons the only way at the moment to help stop the spread is to have home testing kits given out nationally then self isolate immediately would help rather than the long wait at present which at the moment is impossible to implement it would be a cheaper option to develop home kits than following Italy's course of action You have no control over how people think ? People will panic regardless when death is a possibility and no intervention at the moment can help or prevent death...The chaos is already shown throughout the world with the little news that has been released , people already hoarding items ,toilet paper ,tinned food ,sanitisers , with freedom of speech comments will be made and educated minds can filter out the tosh
the government already said the figures of deaths are probably a lot higher but not all deaths are tested for covid 19, drip feeding information as not to create mass hysteria .
there is a lot of research meterial on the internet of viruses and conoviruses and how they evolve but not everyone has the same understanding or can be bothered to do research to read further , facts are there data is there but if just studying main terrestrial news you have only one source of information . why would governments around the world put in place restrictions that are costings tens and hundreds of millions of gdp per day/week/ month to implement just as a precaution ? It will get worse governments cant release all data and facts as would cause chaos

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Terry Fuckwitt on Mar 13, 2020 15:29:20 GMT 1, So our government want 'herd immunity' to allow around 60% of the UK population to get the virus incase the virus hits stronger in the winter.
I was reading something about the panic buying of toilet rolls and it makes sense. They reckon as its the biggest item on the shelves, customers notice when there are larger gaps, so causes them to panic and stock up more. Same with big bottles of water.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Happy Shopper on Mar 13, 2020 15:38:37 GMT 1, We just need to get tests, anti virals ect going and hopefully spring/summer slow it down even more.
The scary thing in the UK at the moment is there is NO testing happening, unless you're so ill you're in hospital... or a premiership footballer!
If you phone 111 with cold or flu symptoms, their answer is just that you're probably fine. Or, if you've been abroad or in contact with a known case, then isolate yourself. And if you have a temperature or cough, then also isolate yourself.
That's all the UK are doing right now!

Its mad over here you think it was the black death all over again. I'm sort of lucky we live out in the sticks with only a few houses scattered for miles. We were down the town yesterday it was like a free for all packed with people loading up their cars.
If everyone just follows a few simple rules this will pass in time.
