Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Daniel Silk on Feb 26, 2020 14:48:00 GMT 1, I dunno, in the early days on here many people talked how they were turning away from putting their savings in the Bank and preferred to invest in art as a safer place during recession. So could the effect actually turn into more people being worried about the stock markets and switch to buying Art at least until business picks up again?

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by pfffffffffft on Feb 26, 2020 14:55:54 GMT 1, Already we're seeing the early effects of the spreading of the coronavirus on the stock market. What do people think it's effect will be on the art market? This virus could potentially shut down the world economy, which surely put us into a global recession.
I don't think this is coronavirus related but it's feeling a little bit to me like just before the Urban Art market went sideways back in 2008 if some of the old timers remember that. Too many artists. Too many new-ish artists with overpriced prints ($5K/$10K plus). Too many artists with auction records that seem inflated.
There were quite a few artists that never really recovered from that crash.

Just checked and it sold for 3300 which is still a solid price for a print and got to love the Whatson spacers with his work 👌

It was 4600 framed. User mentioned it in FB whatson group.
Other user just purchased a HF tiger I framed at 4k.

Older works smaller editions than latest releases and they've found their way into collectors hands by now so flipped less often , less on the market and when do hit make a greater price

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by chevyav53 on Feb 26, 2020 22:26:33 GMT 1, I think it'll just remind everyone how unessential art is. ^^ This, as discretionary income dissipates with the stock market so will the sky high valuations. If it gets really bad for some i.e. some businesses don't survive, owners or those in high positions will find themselves searching for work and as we saw after the .com and credit market crashes so will art valuations.
Art has tracked the S&P 500 fairly closely since the 2000's began.

There was a report not long ago which found only a 0.13 mark correlation between s&p and art market. The virus will not be as big as people imagine and the market is still robust enough to withstand. People will be buying up any dips because its still one of the best performing investments.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by cest on Feb 27, 2020 12:41:48 GMT 1, I personally have stopped buying .. all extra cash will go towards dry powder to buy equities and other rock bottom opportunities (what those are, i am not sure yet).
I flipped houses during the recession, bought silver , gold and diamonds during that same time.
I like panic

Javier Calleja sold out at urvanity, arco selling out at a few booths, Baldur and Sandra sold out in seconds, Case Studyo has another case closed, Madsaki selling out his off set prints, same with Mr and Murakami, Banksy mats all allocated and paid for.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Feb 28, 2020 5:29:29 GMT 1, This virus is spreading to many other countries faster than all new viruses before
I'm sure all government figures are not up to date as many that are infected many leave hospital invertion to the last minute .especially the old or the people that live in remote areas .
Lucky the virus is not as virulent as Ebola .
The longer without a vaccine the more the virus mutates . Worse side effects?
Every few years seems a new unheard of virus does the rounds
The other scary thing , the long term effects for recovery is unknown .
Thinking about it all airports and workers would be a hot spot for tranfer contamination of the virus especially as many do not know they have it .
impossible task to disinfect all airports constantly . Surprised more countries have not put travel bans instead waiting until its a major incident occurs ?!
Might see a rise again in demand form all physical stocks , gold creeping up to an all time high again . Extra cash , bAnksy auctions might do well if this continues .
