I'm really bummed that I missed out on the first run of welcome mats. I'm living on the west coast (USA) for now, and I figure my odds of being active if/when the next drop happens is slim. So for once I decided to put my engineering skills to good use haha, and I created a little SMS service to notify me of changes to the Welcome Mat page as well as notify me of new products added. It checks once a minute. If they drop more mats while I'm awake, I should have a good chance!

I'm happy to add a handful of your phone numbers to the system to get notified as well, but I'd kindly ask that one of you pick up a mat for me too. I haven't fully thought through how it works so that we don't end up with multiple extra mats. But I don't want more than one mat, so maybe if we end up with extras we can pass them off to other members at cost? I pledge that if I have an opportunity to buy one, I'll try to get an extra and pass it off to someone here at cost.

I know people have their ways of monitoring things like this, but I like this way because I'll get a notification wherever I am, I can add the number to my contacts as Love Welcomes Updates, and since I built the service I know exactly how it works, how often it runs, etc. But if this sounds useful to you, send me a message. This won't be open to brand new members or members with close to zero posts. I want to keep the list small because it costs money to send the messages, especially internationally, and it just doesn't seem right to have massive amounts of people using it.

The service is working well for me so far, but bugs arise in software, and I want a mat as badly as you do so I'm motivated to make sure it's always working well. Additionally, the service assumes that new mats will be added similarly to the last ones or as a new product on the site. The service doesn't know what can't be known. It's not much different than a feed reader other than that it checks the welcome mat page specifically for updates and runs faster than free feed reader apps I've had.

Does this sound like a nice thing?

Hi. So I was able to enter the lottery for an item first then realized that the mats were live and bought one so I was one of the rare few that entered first then purchased a mat.

I think it's within the rules because it wasn't part of the reservation system and you purchased it from another store/seller. Theoretically, GDP shouldn't/doesn't have any of your purchase info. Practically though I'd be surprised if LW didn't share the info with GDP. That said, it's just hard to know because it's not specified in the rules. You don't actually purchase anything via GDP or use their store interface, it just links out to Love Welcomes.

The mat, via GDP is marked unlimited and the GDP reservation requests close tomorrow. What happens if on Tuesday another batch of mats are released? Will that negate your reservation that already closed?

I feel like it's so vague and unclear we'll have to wait to see if PC/GDP allows dual purchases. Frankly, because I rushed through without reading the rules I'm more worried about both I and my husband entering from the same address. We wrote to GDP to cancel his but no luck. I'm more worried about that than the mat purchase disqualifying me.

I couldn't imagine how tough it would have been to edit this. It must have been absolutely exhausting and heartbreaking. Most film makers I know love their work, I could only imagine waking up every day with the daunting task of editing down this footage.

was wondering if it's a rubber backing or exposed mesh of the mat.

if it was exposed on the back you could spread the weight with multiple needles (about 100). although over time the mesh might sag...

That's the most interesting perspective I've seen. If everything were the same but it was on a canvas rather than a mat would the naysayers still consider it art?

I’m going have a stab at this and suggest it’s now become art because more than one person says so, had it been just one guy I might have said Jonny no mates is doing that annoying thing again. But now it’s entered our collective vocabulary as being something called art.

in a museum - it would be on the floor. with ropes around it. or on a pedestal. I'm thinking a slightly tilted acrylic box - so not too much pressure on the bottom. like a orchestra musical sheet stand, almost vertical... maybe.. pricey...
