Banksy Welcome Mat, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 23, 2019 16:45:24 GMT 1, False. I like a lot of banksy art. I also donโt think everything he does is great art cause itโs by him. I really hope Carly works with PC and has disqualified you. That would just be *chef's kiss* . You really are souring things round here. Stop being such a stinker.
Yes because Iโm calling a door mat a door mat. An unlimited door mat that is similar to others in the store.
Man like Iโve said before. One of banksy greatest artworks is how he has pulled the wool over so many of his fans eyes.

Stop being such a stinker. Yes because Iโm calling a door mat a door mat. An unlimited door mat that is similar to others in the store. Man like Iโve said before. One of banksy greatest artworks is how he has pulled the wool over so many of his fans eyes. Perhaps this is precisely it, that this piece aims to remove the wool from so many people's eyes. As humans we have become very good at selective awareness. Our ability to walk by homeless people without even registering that they are there, or being able to go about our daily lives without a care that what we take for granted, are things which could be the difference between life or death for others.
Sure, in a literal sense it is a welcome mat like many others. However, it is made by refugees, using life vests that perhaps many of them wore on their journey. Banksy, is inviting us to walk over and clean our feet on the notion of "welcoming,' much like western society has wiped it's responsibility to care for its weakest. Further, the ability to view it as just a welcome mat is the embodiment of this selective awareness of which I just spoke. Sure you could buy any other welcome mat for 50 quid and not think twice, or you could buy this one for 500 quid and begin a conversation with those who visit.
Had these mats not been conceived by Banksy, used repurposed life vests that were found washed up on shores in Europe, and not been made by refugees in camps, perhaps the comparison to any other welcome mat would be fine. However in this case, like it or not, it is a piece of art, and one that draws attention to several different societal woes.

Why did Banksy put a doormat front and centre of one of the window displays in Croydon? Should've put it just inside the door.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Gentle Mental on Oct 23, 2019 17:44:32 GMT 1,
Comparatively, aesthetically, Banksyโs Mat is the uglier mat.
The straps buckle and the bright orange stitching that clashes with the dark boring background. Too stark, primitive and crude.
He wasnโt out to make an attractive rug.
He was out to make a powerful statement.
Unlike the other mats on the site. - elegant, no traces of its past lives, premium handcrafted beauties. Of which i will order one and use as intended. And I encourage all to do so as well. Whichever side youโre on.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Deleted on Oct 23, 2019 17:46:45 GMT 1, Reading through this thread or at least skipping through it is excruciating. This is an artistic work and as such a Banksy artwork. It is as many people have stated one of the better and most poignant items offered. He has signed off class 27 of the trademarks registered, while providing a shit load of cash for an incredible cause. You can say what you like about Banksy but he continually provides cash to worthy causes and in many cases it is not apparent (to us at least) that he has done so. Income redistribution and you donโt drag fox shit into the house. Anyone that has bought a mat has provided a good chunk of cash to love welcomes, will have an interesting item to add to their collection or use as you see fit and will have obviously helped a little. Nailed it yet again. Wait until you see the decorations for Christmas trees.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by dilu on Oct 23, 2019 17:50:42 GMT 1, This โMatโ discussion is exactly what Banksy asks by โ(does) art really matter?
a few years ago my then four year old daughter did a drawing which I loved so I framed. Exhibit A.
images upload
now to most beyond me a loving parent it just looked like a doodle any child might produce. And youโd be right to think that. Yet, a short while later Dran did his exhibition at POW and invited people to submit drawings on a post card which he would judge and award a signed book and to the lucky one, a HMP print. I did my own drawing a cartoon rip off of Matisse and did my daughters drawing.
Well Dran picked my daughters and at four she received a signed book with doodle.
Art is firstly what it means to us without the flip factor. If someone else gets the same enjoyment all the better. These mat are indeed mats with a social conscious meaning. And thatโs the beauty of it. Thatโs why we should enjoy Banksy, Bly, Escif and many others.
Iโm now resting up for this evenings football

Banksy Welcome Mat, by nobokov on Oct 23, 2019 17:59:37 GMT 1, You should've seen the sandwiches that he designed for his kids this morning. Absolute works of art....kidding of course What art do you like? Interested to know your context for what constitutes art, because your reasons for arguing this isn't art are on the 'my kid could do that' level. You're talking about what the physical object is rather than why it was created. The why is the important part in whether or not something is art. Was the creator trying to convey something beyond just producing a physical object? In this case, absolutely yes. In the case of the other Love Welcomes mats, I'd say no, but some might disagree. You can argue that anything is or isn't art based on whether you choose to engage with it. You can argue a Yayoi Kusama pumpkin is just a knick-knack. You can argue a Kaws is just a squiggly Snoopy. You can argue Warhol is just soup labels. You can argue Anish Kapoor just makes mirrors. If you choose not to consider the deeper intent then any conversation about its artistic merits becomes pointless. I don't think that my argument has been that "my kid could do that." I think the main point might have been that all of this conversation and interest revolves around potential profit from some, feeling good about oneself, and Banksy worship from others. There are plenty of mats available from the site which are for the same purpose and intent and can be hung or framed to represent the same ideas. The mats just have a different designer. If this had truly been about the cause, those other mats would have been sold out by now through the sheer buying power of the UAA.
But it isn't about the cause, it's about having a Banksy trophy so that fans can cherish and others can sell on. It's just a Banksy item that we now coincidentally can attach "powerful" and "poignant" meaning. We all know now what the mats represent and the story behind the company. We are all "woke." Let's not pretend that we're now great humanitarians because we purchased it and posted on the plight of the less fortunate. If we were great humanitarians, we wouldn't be purchasing art.
The discussion about edition size, and whether the label will have something Banksy-interesting attached, are all ways to add monetary value, building intrigue for the flip.
The Banksy-designed mat is art in the same way as the other LoveWelcomes mats are art. And also, the mat is not art in the same way that those other mats are not works of art. Unfortunately, due to the price and artist's name, I'm forced to think of it as a piece of art, because I can't possibly think of it as a mat and step on it at that price. And for the LoveWelcomes mats, I can't possibly purchase them, because they are not collectible and I'm just as heartless as everyone else.
I'm glad and thankful that some on this forum can engage in interesting discussion about ideas and not surprised that others cannot. We always see mention of this forum going downhill in its lack of discussions on art, but I think that it's apparent that most are not looking for that type of discussion. It's more about group think, speculation, speculating, and flattery, than critical thought. Thankfully for you all, I've reached my character limit in this thread and can't add any additional comments.

We get it. You don't think it's art. We get it. You think Banksy has fooled us all. We get it. You think we're idiots for caring about this mat. We get it. You think we should all be outraged for Banksy defending his copyright.
We get all of it. WE GET IT. But your opinion is not the only opinion. You've made it clear, now you're just behaving like a jerk to spoil the discussion for everyone else.
Just because we disagree with your opinion it doesn't mean we haven't heard it. We disagree with it. You've made your points and they haven't swayed anyone. You are aware you are becoming rude and annoying and instead of being courteous you have decided to double down on it and be disruptive to the conversation. You are not entitled to force us to agree with you.
Enough already. I've tried to refrain from calling you a troll but I'm starting to think you are one.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by love on Oct 23, 2019 18:20:28 GMT 1, Depending on how many actually get made. Whether itโs the 500 or 1000 or the unlimited it in reality could easily be. Time will on tell if these were worth it... This was your first post on this thread. Why couldnโt you stop there? This post was good and may stand the test of time.
Now you try to tell us over 10 pages that this is not art. Some told you that you are right, why couldnโt you just move on? I think everyone got your point, really everyone.
Not a single person said that the mat wasnโt art when it was displayed at the GDP window. Quite the contrary was said when people saw it in the window. โStrong piece, made me thinkโ and People thought it was an special outstanding piece.
It all started when things went into a $$$ perspective and people were faster than you or just kept believing that it is a strong piece. Itโs like every release these days on that forum, people canโt be happy for others that they snapped a Banksy, Pejac, deface,..., it has to be talked down.
And last, if he stitched the word Welcome, using the fabric from life vests abandoned on the beaches of the Mediterranean, on a canvas, you wouldnโt think a second if itโs art. He used a doormat now, which makes the piece even stronger and you still donโt see art, itโs ok... but please donโt tell us every post.
Instead be happy with the people who took the chance to get a Banksy piece from source.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by tab1 on Oct 23, 2019 18:32:57 GMT 1, Should not need confirmation from others to confirm ones own mindset with regards to whether an item is viewed as art or not . Have individuality , what does a strangers opinion change ? There has been the general description and meaning of art posted earlier and the piece hits the criteria to be described as such. Everyone has different tastes , opinions , views The question on gdp site should of been what constitutes art? There is sometimes a herd mentallity here and people can not see past their strong opinions even if relevant facts , ideas are presented , there are alot here but unsaid that will flip these and are just guaging the general interest here for the open market๐ค

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 23, 2019 18:45:49 GMT 1, Depending on how many actually get made. And last, if he stitched the word Welcome,ย using the fabric from life vests abandoned on the beaches of the Mediterranean, on a canvas, you wouldnโt think a second if itโs art. He used a doormat now, which makes the piece even stronger and you still donโt see art, itโs ok... but please donโt tell us every post. Instead be happy with the people who took the chance to get a Banksy piece from source.
Oh donโt worry about me. I didnโt miss out. I had the chance to buy when still in stock.
I just didnโt want to spend 500 pounds on a mass produced door mat conceptualized by banksy.

That's the most interesting perspective I've seen. If everything were the same but it was on a canvas rather than a mat would the naysayers still consider it art?
If not why? I mean, Eine's work is art so just saying it's a word on a canvas doesn't really fly here.
If so why?

I got the citrus mat its a lotย more orangey in real life, there is some life vest weaved into it too, Its super soft and is being used as a table mat at the minute !
Torn between the sapphire stone or the citrus as a back door mat. The kids need something to put their wellies on.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Terry Fuckwitt on Oct 23, 2019 19:58:47 GMT 1, Iโm all for conceptually calling anything designed, fabricated, crafted, performed, etc art. Sure that Barista who incredibly and perfectly handles the morning rush at the coffee shop. Pure art. That yoga instructor who blends music and the poses into one. Pure art. That attorney who litigates and perfectly executes and argument in court. Pure art. The designer of that fountain pen that writes oh so smooth. Pure art. In concept yes. Anything and everything can be art. But in reality there has to be a common sense line drawn. When someone argues that one mat from a retail shop is art and the other is not just because an artists name is attached to it and it costs more. Thatโs insanity. someone mentioned yoga
Hmmm.. I'm no expert, but seems to me you may have a mat fettish. Did you also buy a Peckham beer mat by any chance? If you need help for this problem I'll pass you on to my therapist friend, his names Matt๐

We talking the unlimited edition of canvases. Are they signed? Are they sold in an online store? Advertised as art or wall paper?
