Banksy Welcome Mat, by drip on Oct 20, 2019 14:23:56 GMT 1, Not criticising anyone's choice on how to display their purchases but will displaying the mat next to a life jacket actually add anything to the whole thing? I mean, I think if people see you have a framed welcome mat on the wall, they're likely to ask about it (or read the little plaque next to it) and they'll learn about its origin, the construction and humanitarian aid crisis behind it. But what will the life jacket add? Sure, it might look more like the Banksy display, but they're still going to have to ask, otherwise it can just look like you welcome yachters or something. I fear we're slightly edging towards fetishizing this.
Edit: I'm talking about in a domestic home setting, obvs. If you're sticking it in a local museum, gallery or community centre, you go for it.

Not exactly a decent photo, but the text is legible. Nice! I'll get something mocked up tomorrow @ work. Just took a look at the GDP website to check the font, but it's built using your bogstandard Helvetica, Aerial etc by the look of it. The one used here's different so will do my best to match it as closely as possible...

I think it's just one step too far to be displaying it with a lifejacket. It might be similar to framing a donation receipt to Helen Keller International and displaying it next to a Braille dictionary.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by nobokov on Oct 20, 2019 16:16:48 GMT 1, I think it's just one step too far to be displaying it with a lifejacket. It might be similar to framing a donation receipt to Helen Keller International and displaying it next to a Braille dictionary. After the initial photos I assumed the mats were attached to the jackets which really connected the two but alas you only get the mat so I dont think presenting both together is such a bad thing Pain to display but not in anyway wrong
I guess I just don't see this mat as artwork, just a product you get in return for a donation. So from that perspective, displaying it like a piece of art comes off like bragging about buying a Banksy-related item rather than speaking about a particular set of issues.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Deleted on Oct 20, 2019 16:31:21 GMT 1, Let me make it clear for ayauashca, jaygo and denzil, I couldn't give two hoots about free publicity, I got an early call about the mats and bought it to support the charity, never had plans to sell or profit from it. After it was confirmed I thought what's the point in me sticking it in drawer as I'm not going to frame it. A few weeks back I'd met up with one of the founders of Lucy's trust, he's a friend and I went to school with his partner who gave up veterinary practice to rescue dogs/animals, mostly abuse cases. To receive government funding they have to open to the public but wont/can't because of bite risk. They do this for love of the animals regardless and any help means alot, they put everything into it. They're friends, I wanted to help them. The mat could have been sold to someone else and that would've been the end of it. I helped in the only way I can by using my platform to raise some money, so far it's at £1600,fantastic, hopefully it brings some more attention to both charities and raises some more funds. Thanks to those that supported, thank you. To the keyboard warriors blow me. Peace, Andy Of course you don't. Your entire business model is based on the back of coat-tailing. Even the artists you pump out, are parody's. You love the attention, you big drama queen.
Once Bbay goes live, it will be you blowing others. Pucker up those lips

Just because you don't view it as art it doesn't mean someone else feels the same way.
Is this a photo taken by the local government documenting a homeless camp or a dump or is this a photo by a world renown photographer worth tens of thousands of dollars? I'm confident you won't know without a reverse image search which is the point.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by nobokov on Oct 20, 2019 17:02:23 GMT 1, I guess I just don't see this mat as artwork, just a product you get in return for a donation. So from that perspective, displaying it like a piece of art comes off like bragging about buying a Banksy-related item rather than speaking about a particular set of issues. Art is in the eye of the beholder and anything can be art really, it just depends on your viewpoint. I understand your point. I think it's likely a small minority of the population that could interpret a welcome mat as art.
For that picture, is that a segment of a complete image or is that the final work? Usually he moves garbage around and makes it into something beautiful. If this is the final image, it's pretty terrible and kind of a similar example as the mat, where the artist name is the thing on display rather than it being artwork.
I wonder how Banksy would view the mat. Would he see it as an example of artwork, or not, but understanding how artcollectors and profiteers work and using that relationship for good? Can someone who knows him tab1 ask him?

Banksy Welcome Mat, by teabaggins on Oct 20, 2019 17:08:27 GMT 1, Art is in the eye of the beholder and anything can be art really, it just depends on your viewpoint. It would seem that by displaying the Mat in the GDP store that Banksy considers it a piece of artwork (or at a minimum a piece of the greater art installation that was the GDP display) , no? Also, as others (non forum know it all’s) have seen the piece, their opinion is that it is very powerful infact. Much like the migrants in a truck piece which I guess could also be reduced down to a toy if someone really wanted.
Seemingly those that do not consider the mat “art” are guided by things like value and edition sizes (a very forum trait)

Banksy Welcome Mat, by nobokov on Oct 20, 2019 17:08:48 GMT 1, I’m defo one of those people who think its art EDIT: the mat that is Is art sometimes an illusion? If one person in the world (not talking about this mat) thinks that something is art, does it make it art? Sometimes it's just a toilet and bullshit right?

Does this showroom comment on the ridiculousness of art? Gross Domestic Product, Solutions for wealth. I wonder if Banksy sees himself as an artist or just someone making fun of the artworld and art market. Are collectors people he thinks of with fondness or disgust?

Can someone who knows him tab1 ask him? That picture is a complete image but part of a portfolio of I think 7 images by Vik Muniz who also moves the garbage around making it into something beautiful as part of the portfolio. Have you never seen a dandelion peeking out from cracks in the sidewalk and thought how striking it looks as an image? Again, it's in the eye of the beholder.
Banksy designed the mat so I would imagine he likes it...or at the very least thinks it's all right :-). Personally, as art it is poignant to me the way GDP had it displayed because coupled with the jacket it immediately conveys the spirit of the design/work. You understand it, or have an understanding of it, instantly. On it's own it's tougher for me as art. But that's really art right? Context is sometimes important, very much like that garbage photo.
That said, I haven't seen it in person so I'm not sure if the spirit of the work is conveyed without the support of the jacket because there are clues there like the straps.
Regardless, for someone like me I was able to donate and feel good about it and grab an authorized work so for me it's all upside. :-)

I mean, you’re not wrong. Art is subjective. But Duchamp, or whatever artist one is discussing should be considered in the context of the art scene at the time.
Anything is art and people are also fully entitled to say that only painting or drawings are art. Who cares? Defo give your opinions but there’s no right or wring answer.

This might be controversial but this is how I feel about L-13. Every time they have a new release their message seems to be “buy this you idiots!” It feels like they’re taking the piss out of their supporters while trying to act punk or alternative. I agree it can be hard to read peoples intentions because I’m sure everyone at L-13 loves their supporters.
