that new print is ... different.

it is his brimstone character, Retna has been painting that image for over a decade. If i'm not mistaken there is an interview from ages ago where Retna describes himself as brimstone, almost like an alter ego he has when he drinks and such.

its the first time i believe its been a print. He's done alot of different brimstone originals over the years, varying in size. i believe this is the first time it will be an edition. the print is two different editions, 12 each, blackstone and bluestone, 43 x 31 inches, it'll be interesting to see what sort of demand there is for this print, considering it doesn't include any of his signature lettering. i have to figure it'll cost more then the previous editions he did with printthemall regardless of image content.

these are different versions of brimstone hes done over the years.

this one belongs to new image art, and is probably the best version of it that i've seen

Agreed. With the social media networks that many live in, every move they seem to make is documented. That being said, Retna doesn’t appear to be a “nice” man, and also seems to bring most of this upon himself. However, as was just pointed out, some of the best artists of the past would have had very similar (and as frequent) “melts”, had the internet existed.

I'm not sure sounding like an asshole on instagram is against the law, so what does it matter if that would work as a legal defense?

I met Marq in 05 when one of my crew mates was staying with him for a few weeks to paint freeway spots when that was first starting to really blow up in LA. He is totally insane and unfiltered like a lot of the most genius creative minds were throughout history. Michelangelo, Pythagoras, Van Gogh, Beethoven, O'Keefe, Goya, Dali, and countless others were at least as crazy pre-internet.

Today most artist have to run the sales customer service marketing business admin themselves through their websites and ig. Very few people have the personality type and emotional intelligence to balance unbound creativity and personal responsibility. The pressure compounds at his pay scale and work rate, triggering addiction and mental illness symptoms.

It's charming how so many of you are quick to snap judge him personally, but wouldn't let that effect your reverence for him as an artist. I'm imagining how quick you would cue up for his autograph and to tell him how great you think he is. He'll be one that is appreciated 1000x more after he dies, which won't be long at this rate.

I didn’t snap judge him. I said he was a tool and unfollowed because I couldn’t be @rsed to read the rubbish.

Admiring someone’s art is one thing. Reading b0ll0cks is another.

So it’s not ok to criticise someone who is insane and unfiltered, as long as they are high up the pay scale and creative?

Obviously he has some issues to deal with regarding his meltdowns... But his work is in my eyes one of the best out there, literally love all of his pieces..
