Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Feb 27, 2017 22:41:17 GMT 1, Hi All,
I thought I'd start a thread about what I'm doing out there. Essentially I fix elephant sculptures where I see a vacant plinth. Though the first ones weren't so high up, but I lost most of them, too easy to get to and to remove. I've worked on my fixing method and locations and they seem to be holding up better.

Lately they've been in groups and high enough that they are at least awkward to get to.

You can see more on Instagram: www.instagram.com/elephantmansculpture/
I've been carving variations of this shape of elephant for more than 20 years and it has gone through several iterations in terms of materials used. These ones are cast concrete, 62cm high for the bigger ones.
These are bunch of carved elephants in an exhibition of my painting back on 1997. I don't know why it is only elephants that I have made. I did try carving a bird once, but it remains unfinished.
Perhaps it is that I feel a little bit like I'm on a mission. I cannot be Elephantman if I am not trying to change things for the elephants in some way. I have an ambitious plan for an installation of 30,000 elephants to tour the cities of China, where most of the ivory ends up. these elephants would be made of an earth/resin mix and be produced by young people in China helped by terms of facilitators. In this way as many as 100,000 young people will have a hands on role in an effort to persuade people that they no longer want ivory, that ivory is some person's teeth, that ivory is utterly gross. Elephants are people, don't take their teeth.
Mission or not, I do get an enormous buzz from putting the elephants out there. With a hi-viz vest and hard hat, I'm obviously meant to be doing it, no-one seems to imagine that I don't have permission.
Anyway hope you like

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Feb 28, 2017 9:05:56 GMT 1, Hi Phischa,
The easiest ones to see are in Camden or Brick lane in London, but there are about 30 out there, mostly east London.

Thank you for the information. I'll spend some days in London next month, will definitely look out for them.

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Mar 1, 2017 11:58:11 GMT 1, I posted a bunch of these posters near the elephant sculptures and they've all gone in less than a week! I'm new to pasting posters so I guess I've done something wrong if they were so easy to remove!

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Mar 1, 2017 18:41:21 GMT 1, It was truly great to meet you Doyle, so glad you like the elephants, and double delighted that you bought one!! That's two exclamation marks, don't do that for everyone. They say that the number of exclamation marks used is in inverse proportion to the level of sanity present in the writer at the moment of writing.

Elephantman street sculpture, by elephantman on Mar 3, 2017 10:48:03 GMT 1, Hi Elephant,
It is most generous, and kind of you to offer to do such a thing. I guess it depends on your attachment to your name whether you want to give it up. I could not conceivably call myself anything else, considering that I've only made elephant sculptures, though I've done plenty of painting and murals under my own name, and I did try to sculpt a bird figure once, but that sits in the yard unfinished. It's been elephants all the way for 20+ years and I've only recently worked out why.
I do not want to impose a change in name upon you and while I do really appreciate the offer, and more than anything, the place it's coming from, I am easy about it. If I google Elephantman, I don't find my work but John Merrick, a Jamaican singer and stuff about the stage play, so confusion and profrusion reigns!
Thanks again
E.Man
