David Hockney 🏴 Painting • Show News • Art For , by Hubble Bubble on Mar 10, 2022 15:09:05 GMT 1, And now we know why the images were embargoed.
I’ve felt the Taschen images dropped off considerably after the Sumo. I didn’t like the ‘My Window’ series and, frankly, these reek of a lazy cash in.
It will be interesting to see if they sell well. I’m a keen Hockney collector and -despite being offered - decided a while ago I was out. I’d rather pick up a couple of older lithographs for this money.

On the link you can see the beautiful images in the books then somehow these were chosen. Makes no sense at all. Maybe the contract was signed then he fell out with Taschen. Reminds me of when Bast produced deliberately bad ‘Smurf pen is’ art to get back at the Conor Bros bloke when he had Leonard St gallery.

David Hockney 🏴 Painting • Show News • Art For , by Hubble Bubble on Mar 10, 2022 15:53:18 GMT 1, There was a release of several Normandy prints about a year ago from source. Most featured the house and were a bit sub par I think. I’ve not seen any prints of the beautiful scenes of nature captured in his Normandy work. If there were I think they would be every bit as popular as his Yosemite or Yorkshire series.

I reckon he executed them on two sheets and they’ve printed them onto a single. Not great if so.

Which I’m guessing is more A4 than CinemaScope

Just watched the video again and I see what you mean. He’s painted across the width of the sketchbook including the page fold.

David Hockney 🏴 Painting • Show News • Art For , by blurp on Mar 10, 2022 17:31:45 GMT 1, Indeed I did! With a lot of the old school banksy (dot) info crowd (I even had an account on there for many years from 2004 onward, plus on wallkandy, old ebay forum etc too). The highlight of that Bast show was Supine. It's just too bad he hasnt seen to have done much (drugs?). I have a couple of Supines, love them! Sadly only one Bast piece- what I would REALLY love one day is a Pink Paris by Bast but they were always too much $.

Well then we were at the same show! It was a very enjoyable night, with, as you say, lots of familiar faces. For me that was when Supine’s pieces were at their very best, playing with classical figures, against that intense black background. Just superb.

One just has to appreciate the sardonic wit of this piece. And, presumably, its social commentary — notwithstanding the fact David Hockney seems to be a militant smoker, bordering on evangelical.
The fresh open air. A picturesque cottage and nature scene. All reduced to the status of an ashtray.

Salts is a fabulous place, stock... there's a permanent Hockney exhibition there and the place itself and surrounding streets are fabulous. It was a mill, built by Sir Titus Salt, a mill owner who cared about his workers, building them housing (in said surrounding streets, named after his children) etc.
There's also a great book you can get which tells the story of how Jonathan Silver, a (then) young Mancunian fell in love with the place and persuaded David Hockney (a famous son of Bradford) to be at the centrepoint of its restoration.

I see it's currently sold out but you can check if it's being reprinted or it may be available elsewhere.
