If I go to the guggenheim in new york and fall in love with a J pollock piece I have 2 choices;
1. Become a billionaire
2. buy an exact replica from the gift store on the way out, some replicas are the exact sizes of the smaller pieces and yes they are paper not canvas, however the Kandinsky replica prints are the same size as the originals though unsigned and unstamped.
If I see a Banksy piece on the wall that I like I also have 2 choices
1. Become slightly richer than I may ever be
2. Buy an exact replica from ebay stamped with COPY on the back though unsigned and stamped.
A classic artist hangs in the guggenheim, the gift store cashes in....a street artist hangs on street corners, the west country prince cashes in.
West country prince = the street artists verion of the cheapo souvenir and gift store.
If anyone else sees the issue with someone copying an artists work, whilst blatantly telling everyone its a copy, selling it cheaper as a copy and then stamping the word copy on it in massive red letters then perhaps they should call the estates of dali, picasso, kandinsky, warhol etc etc etc because the story is repeated across the globe.
Anyone who wishes to question the above theory is welcome to do so but should also perhaps click here first for an accurate case in point

This is a discussion based on principles, not just monetary but moral and intellectual by the way or artistic rights. Had the image been made to pay homage and not be an exact replica which if you havent noticed more and more have started popping up, but is it the same inks? that wont fade? the same paper? that wont curl? we know its definitely not the same stencils of years and years ago as the gangsta rat, so the feel and self respect of knowing the image on your wal was one tat was created under supervision and direction from the man himself is self sufficient to end my part in this discussion, but Just so you know, Banksy is not helping the world or paying for flights to do that street art you say you love so much all around the world with the money he ISNT getting from the illegal sale of reproduced artwork.

i agree, however there is a big difference between supporting the artist by buying original pieces (even on secondary market) , than supporting your local market trader type by buying overpriced knock offs.

Surely this is an art forum. Not and investment forum. If you worry about devaluation, then forget art buy gold.
And while you are bemoaning the decrease in value of your very expensive art investments, it might actually be possible, with these cheap reproductions, for a nurse (for example), paying back pay her tuition fees to actually have an amazing piece of art on her wall called "laugh now". Without having to go bankrupt to pay for one.
Or alternatively, I suppose, she could pay you several thousands of pounds for one of your precious "investment pieces"
