... you obviuosly do not know what the Big Issue does and what the sellers do and how they earn their living ...
If you want - ask a seller for their Big Issue 'license' which will include a photo of the person.

Why do people like Stik?, by 11 on Jan 5, 2016 14:46:14 GMT 1, This is getting ridiculous now 4 0m high mural painted to highlight shortage of affordable housing Pic courtesy of Eastend Review I would never have guessed and I doubt most people driving pas that saw this mural would have guessed it was highlighting the shortage of affordable housing too. Don't take people for fools it is highlighting Stik.
Lmao - so a street artist shouldn't paint or they are accused of self-promotion
As a guard in smiling sweetly - can't tell you the what I'm muttering under my breath

Thanks for admitting it at last.

"Firuta Vasile, 29, came to the UK in 2007, when Romania became an EU state, and began selling the Big Issue.
Living in a £130,000 house with her four children in Bristol, she was told by the council that she was not entitled to housing benefit because rules state EU nationals must be in work.
But Mrs Vasile won a court case arguing that selling the Big Issue was a form of self-employment - helping her to claim more than £28,000 a year."

Stiks name linked to the issue brought it lots of attention it otherwise wouldn't have got. But in your eyes thats ONLY self promotion. By that measure, no one will ever do anything out of compassion, kindness or goodwill. And no one that ever paints the streets will do so for anything other than self promotion.
its a very sad place you dwell in really. are you judging others by your own standard?

You're living in fantasy land if you think any 'big' street artist promotes themselves. Try and name one such artist that does so with no gallery or other external assistance. No doubt that Stik has had plenty of paid help during his career, and why shouldn't he?

What!?! I've been sitting here with my feet up thinking this job is a cushy little number - nobody told me we actually had responsibilities, do we get union representation as well. Next you'll be telling me it's voluntary and I don't get paid

Why do people like Stik?, by Deleted on Jan 5, 2016 17:17:03 GMT 1, Is Stik classed as a minimalist artist? If not then he certainly could be classed as simplistic artist (I don't mean him personally ) and this is probably the appeal and why "people like Stik" sometimes less really is more. How many artist's in the past have come along with a simple style and are now household names.
It's very easy to say "I could do that" when "That" has already been done.
His work seems so familiar when you see it and look's so easy to replicate, yet each image is so striking without a lot of fuss. The bold coloured figures with hardly any detail whatsoever and yet each one is able to convey an emotion.
I think his work will certainly go from strength to strength and he will surely be remembered.
Sorry to have added to this expanding thread and I'm sure this has all been mentioned before.
I am now officially on "Team Stik"

Why do people like Stik?, by saucyjack on Jan 5, 2016 17:54:54 GMT 1, I remember the front cover of that Big Issue well. It had a little Stik figure featured in the upper corner accompanied by words like, "This is the next Banksy." I also remember that issue featured a collaboration between Big Issue and M&C Saatchi. As we all know, M&C Saatchi is an enormous advertising agency. I know the "official" story goes that Stik used the funds from the out of court settlement to pay for the costs associated with the 75,000 prints. I don't believe it. Fact is, the only people who know the truth are Stik, Big Issue, and (maybe) Saatchi. Aside from Charles choking Nigella, I have no problems with it. Good on Stik for his success. I only want to point out that Stik does indeed have a very strong PR team. Hey mr communicator, do you question the personal tastes of the kids you teach? Tell them that the stuff they like is crap? Why don't you just act your age and worry about the art you like not what everybody else likes. Pretty much every post from you since you've joined has been criticism looks like your only here to pick an argument and not actually contribute anything? Why don't you tell the rest of the forum your previous username let them know who they are dealing with That's all I've never said Stik is crap. Please have a look and quote where I said it's crap. I have simply stated, with evidence to support, that PR is indeed a factor in the success of many artists, including Stik.
I've also stated that I am happy for Stik's success it is not wrong, it just is.
So much interest in my little opinion is a bit silly, no? Do as 11 has suggested elsewhere and use the Block function. Like magic, my opinions, which seem to trouble you so, vanish.

Why do people like Stik?, by Deleted on Jan 5, 2016 18:26:22 GMT 1, I agree with you totally that street artists as they like to call themselves should promote themselves and also the fact is that linking ones name to a social issue or charity does help sales. Thanks for admitting it at last. He didn't agree with you AT ALL. Maybe you should read it properly. but then i guess it doesn't fit your viewpoint does it. In the real world art is a business.
Attaching ones name to a cause or a charity does add publicity to an artist whether the publicity is wanted or not.
Plenty of people anonymously donate to charities and causes. There has been a lot of mention on this art forum about Stiks great charitable work with his art. Why mention it of the forum is about art?
I'm saying it's good business promotion to donate art and time to charity and causes when one has products to sell. I see nothing wrong with it when people are honest about it. It benfits the charity or cause and benefits the business. It can be tax deductable too.
With respect to the OP this thread is about the art and why people like it.

Why do people like Stik?, by tartarus on Jan 5, 2016 18:32:41 GMT 1, He didn't agree with you AT ALL. Maybe you should read it properly. but then i guess it doesn't fit your viewpoint does it. Again, you just sound bitter. You find it impossible to see the good in others. And judging by the way you seem to think everything is based on some kind of manipulation rather than the wish to do good things, thats more a reflection on you than an artist helping others out.
Some call it a social conscience.

Why do people like Stik?, by Deleted on Jan 5, 2016 18:34:13 GMT 1, Forum guardians shouldn't insult members or be vindictive. You took the pledge He is not insulting you. You are literally talking out of your arse. "Interesting dialogue" basically only post an opinion if it conforms with what you want to see posted on the forum and your own opinion.
Don't raise points and don't ask questions.
It's clear that for some this forum exists as a platform for marketing and making money and onvious that if one does not post a big WOW or LOVE IT or pretend that they have bought one or pretend that it has sold.
They get insulted by people who are very touchy for some reason.

Why do people like Stik?, by Hairbland on Jan 5, 2016 18:35:34 GMT 1, Like it or not. Who cares. almost 10 pages of waste. IDGAF! Move on or get an ignore thread option. PLEASE! Wish we could have an ignore thread option....unfortunately cant be done It is easy to ignore a thread - just don't open it.
But if one opens said thread AND comments, I think the right to complain about said thread falls on deaf ears.
