Donald Trump, by Deleted on Nov 9, 2018 11:48:43 GMT 1, Why would you want a Prime Minister that makes America great again? I just wish we had someone like Trump to have been in charge of Brexit. Job would have been done now. After Article 50 was triggered his belligerent response would have been:"We're off now. Talk to us in March 2019 and we will see if there is anything we can do to help you!" How the French and Germans would have come running then. Hardly. The French and Germans would have carried on quite happily without us thank you very much. It would be the UK that was in trouble, with our GDP slashed by 50% But, hey, we would have left the EU so that's all that matters to you, right?

Donald Trump, by Happy Shopper on Nov 9, 2018 11:49:45 GMT 1, All that shows is how easily led people are. Trump blatantly revs up the fear and rhetoric (and lies) to get votes - and people are stupid enough to swallow it all. The same thing happened this side of the pond with Brexit. People need to start thinking for themselves and questioning what these idiots tell them. The other similarity with Brexit is that it's been so polarising that many people are determined to stick to their vote, despite all the facts given to them. They now want to believe (or ignore) the obvious lies, and not believe there's going to be any negative impact.

Donald Trump, by Deleted on Nov 9, 2018 11:54:22 GMT 1, ... as another 12 people are senselessly killed last night in Thousand Oaks, CA while line dancing. It's becoming a daily thing. So. Sad. Trump could cure this sort of thing from happening overnight if he really wanted to. The trouble is that he is dependant on the gun-tooting white trash of the mid US states and so he wont say anything bad about guns - ever. ...and so the slaughter continues.

Donald Trump, by Deleted on Nov 9, 2018 12:11:34 GMT 1, Really, with the political will, an effective gun reform is very simple: 1) ban automatic, semiautomatic and pump action firearms, 2) adopt real licensing requirements 3) establish a national firearms registry 4) institute a 28-day waiting period for gun purchases 5) start a voluntary buy back and destroy programme with amnesty for illegally owned firearms entering the programme. The above actions took just months (not years) to implement in 1996 Australia (in reaction to the Port Arthur mass shooting and against the very same NRA opposition we hear in US). These actions led to: faster falls in firearm deaths, firearm suicides, firearm homicides, and a decade without mass shootings (before the policy Australia had, roughly, one mass shooting a year - ie, scaled by population, a similar rate as US). Moreover, there was no evidence of substitution effect (ie gun violence was NOT replaced by other forms of violence - ie knife). These are all strongly significant effects reviewed and well studied and understood by academics and documented in peer reviewed articles. These are facts, not opinions: real gun control does work. The rest is just callous gun-lobby propaganda peddled (for money) by lying ideologues and repeated by their suckers. And on the other side of the globe, Trump's answer to gun crime is...more guns. When will America wake up to this madness?

Thoughts and prayers don't change anything unfortunately. That's what bugs me about Trump (one of the things anyway). Each time there is some sort of massacre in a school or elsewhere, Trump comes along and offers his "thoughts and prayers" for the bereaved. How about not praying and actually doing something constructive instead.

People need to start thinking for themselves and questioning what these idiots tell them. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to blame an uneducated populace when the press / media are in a constant ratings competition, dumbing down the news to little more than reality/celebrity tv.
What we need is more journalists with the integrity to tell it like it is and news corporations to report news as opposed to opinion. The practice of giving people with opinions, but few facts a platform is bad enough, but it should be the job of the press to tell us whether or not we are being told the truth.
The new political establishment is using this to their advantage and doing very good job of distracting us from the lies they peddle by accusing everyone and their dog of being dishonest and working against our interests. It's Box Office politics. And it all gets reported as fact, no questions asked.
When you've been conditioned to believe that we in the west are honest and do things by the book and that unscrupulous behaviour is what our enemies and those in the developing world get up to its hard to accept the leader of your Nation lying to you.

Might be quite an old amendment, but it seems to be the cornerstone

Donald Trump, by touchdowntodd on Nov 9, 2018 17:11:30 GMT 1, Stop bringing up what worked in other countries
That's TOTALLY different. Different culture, etc. They never had our crime issues even before guns were prolifically used. Can't compare Australia to the united states, that's ludicrous. Just based off population, culture, population density, etc. But especially off number of guns, and percentage of population that owned one prior to the ban.. it's not even close
You do realize that the US alone owns nearly half of the ENTIRE worlds guns? Just under 400 million (possibly more) where the entire world has roughly 850 million guns.
No other country can be compared
1 in 3 Americans owns a gun.. that varies from 20-40% depending on the survey.. but that includes the ENTIRE population. Meaning kids, elderly, etc.. meaning likely more than half of regular age adults own one...
Australia had 650,000 guns in the entire country prior to the partial ban...
Perhaps you should read this, or any other stocky article explaining cultural differences in gun ownership...
Even speak with ANY Foreigner. I don't know but maybe 2 or 3 people outside of the US that own guns of the 100s that I Converse with regularly. fact is most cultures fear guns vs Americans embracing for hundreds of years now.
Let's stop comparing apples and oranges. At minimum choose a country with similar crime and culture

Ah the pitbull answer on some level. There are no bad dogs just bad owners. The majority of us grew up in the same culture and not all of us had great childhoods. There is a minority of a minority of people with mental health issues committing the majority of these acts. I do think a lot of what you mention speaks more to the inner city on some level though.

There is a minority of a minority of people with mental health issues committing the majority of these acts. I do think a lot of what you mention speaks more to the inner city on some level though.

Donald Trump, by Deleted on Nov 9, 2018 17:42:59 GMT 1, Stop bringing up what worked in other countries That's TOTALLY different. Different culture, etc. They never had our crime issues even before guns were prolifically used. Can't compare Australia to the united states, that's ludicrous. Just based off population, culture, population density, etc. But especially off number of guns, and percentage of population that owned one prior to the ban.. it's not even close You do realize that the US alone owns nearly half of the ENTIRE worlds guns? Just under 400 million (possibly more) where the entire world has roughly 850 million guns. No other country can be compared 1 in 3 Americans owns a gun.. that varies from 20-40% depending on the survey.. but that includes the ENTIRE population. At minimum choose a country with similar crime and culture www.nytimes.com/2018/02/23/opinion/australias-gun-laws-america.html I don't know what you are trying to say here. Are you saying that as the USA is different to other countries, therefore it is perfectly ok to allow them to have as many guns as they wish, including automatic and semi-automatic rifles in the hands of anybody who wants one?

Just under 400 million (possibly more) where the entire world has roughly 850 million guns. No other country can be compared So, what's the solution? Not to even try to restrict access to guns, or even just certain types of guns?
In this country we have the same permissive attitude to car accident deaths, but while we make cars safer and pass laws to decrease hazards, with regard to guns we just mumble freedom, something something about protection from tyrants and 2nd amendment. There is a slippery slope mindset with regard to gun laws while those at the same time acknowledge they don't have the right to bear ALL arms, only some.
I am pro guns, own them but access is crazy easy.
