I don't believe these are hand finished, but I could be wrong. Pretty sure the answer is no though.

Key word: asking; as in, not sold.  In terms of sales, I don't think the originals are moving upwards as fast as you think they are.  The last offer that hit my inbox a few months ago still had a 30"x40" piece in her popular style priced around $5,750USD, and larger works, again in her popular style, at 36"x48" priced at about $7,400USD.   There has also been a nice 24"x24" diamond sitting in the FS forum of this very site at $5,000USD for weeks.  

As for the print, at £970 for an edition of 99, that is a very aggressive jump from $1,000USD for an edition of 30, especially considering the last recorded MV2 sale was at $1,600USD.  

On a very basic level, I like the work and think it is pretty, but that only takes me so far in how much I want to spend to own any of it.

I'm sorry you haven't had higher offers on your Maya. But you've made the mistake of thinking that Maya's market only exists within this forum. So while you may not be getting offers here, selling through one of her galleries, I would imagine, would yield much better results.

As for the print, I didn't say she hasn't taken an aggressive jump with this one. We'll see whether or not it was warranted. But I'll tell you that I received an offer of 1800 USD for my MV2, and did not accept.

I think in the end we agree on her work. I like it, I own it. I won't be killing people over each and every release to get my hands on them.

I am not the one selling the painting on the forum, nor did I mean to imply that her market consisted of only this forum, which is why I gave an example of an attempted private sale, and the prices provided for recent gallery works.  

My comments aren't an attempt to bring her down.  I wish her much success.  I just think there can be harm in attempting to move prices upward too quickly.  Regardless of my opinions, we shall see the outcome of that decision shortly.

We didn't pre-sale that or any other release, but no matter how many times we repeat that there are 100s of unhappy fans that keep accusing us for that. So we'll just let our future releases speak for us.

Compared with Bridget Riley and Many Ray and other greats signed low editions being sold for a few hundred at auction houses.

I remember the Ben Eine camouflage print was also GBP 950 with an edition of 25. That was released in 2013 and is still on sale at Lazarides.

I don't buy the we raised the price to stop flippers argument. That some galleries use.

They raised the price to make more money and if someone re sells for more on the secondary markey why should they care.

Its about being loyal to our fans some artists say.

It's a very fine line that many artists run... Faile and Kaws, for example.

I think this won't be another bun fight. Things usually sell out instantly because there are people who think that they can profit from it. There is literally no profit to be made from reselling this.

Me either. Just paint slapped on with vibrant colors and everyone screams "OMG, More dripping paint this time YESSS". I think her bubble has popped imo. Shepard Fairey warns us about artists like her that raise prices too fast because of the buzz. Stay away he says. Ill take his word for it.

What would you consider a “red flag” when making a purchase?

"When an artist is raising their prices very, very quickly – even if their work is strong. Like I said in the beginning, I think that if you like it and you don’t mind parting with that amount of money to get it, then “no regrets…” But, sometimes I think a gallery has gotten into someone’s ear, or they’ve had a little bit of press attention and they’re maybe growing with their prices in a way that is not necessarily going to be legitimized over time. Frequently when that happens, I say, “oh, well, I can either wait and see if things settle and if this person actually puts their prices back in a more moderate place or maybe they really are going to become somebody on the rise [and they] are headed for a bluechip career and even though knowing what their work was just a year or two ago I was foolish not to acquire work then. If somebody’s prices are jumping up too quickly it could be a temporary bubble, so that’s a red flag. That’s a warning sign to proceed with caution."

Disclosure: I had a run-in with MH during one of my purchases, and let's just say I came off that leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

An artist may have the right to price his or her work at any level (and even if the print house prices the work, i believe the artist needs to agree with that as well as he or she gets a portion of the earnings) but it is equally important imo an artist understands his or her current standing in the art world and care enough to price them sensibly to cater to collectors and supporters across the board. Afterall, prints are the only means for people who don't have the resources to spend on an OG or can't easily get one due to its scarcity. I see this as an experiment to try raising her price and watch if the market responds to it. If it does eventually sell out, nobody is going to have chance of a £200 print release anymore.

With regards to some comments that this tactic is to keep out flippers, I tend to disagree. Nobody can ever gauge how much a print can fetch on secondary markets when it is first released. Prints by even the same artist fetch different prices and have different demands altogether. Let's just keep to the explanation that this is to make more money.

If that is her reasoning, do you think she's being unfair by taking profits that should rightfully be hers?
