Visit SHANGHAI π¨π³ China Street Art, Galleries, Events, by budoukiba on Nov 17, 2007 4:25:50 GMT 1, Hi gentlemental,
I am living in Shanghai at the moment. I guess your best bet is to go to MoGanShan Lu. Its a large area of loads of galleries and there is some pretty good stuff there. Also, MoGan Shan Lu itself has a lot of street work running down it, which is quite difficult to find in Shanghai. Drop me a PM if you need any more help (although I will be out of town tonight). How long are you in Shanghai for?

Visit SHANGHAI π¨π³ China Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Dead Elvis on Nov 17, 2007 19:41:10 GMT 1, what is THE artist of the moment?
Chinese Contemporary is hands-down the "art of the moment". Zhang Huan, Zhang Xiaogang, and Yue Minjun are a few of the people you should check out. I think they are all working from Beijing, but you should be able to find some amazing stuff in your area...

Because people are lazy, culturally ignorant and arrogant. They don't bother to check their information and assume 'they' are all the same because the unfamiliar names sound similar to the western ear...
It's a very poor show....

Visit SHANGHAI π¨π³ China Street Art, Galleries, Events, by lostinshanghai on Dec 29, 2007 4:50:47 GMT 1, Thanks Paulypaul for linking and mentioning my website above, I got a lot of traffic to my website because of it. I now live in China dealing Chinese contemporary art which Amin said is very hot right now and also expensive. If you have any questions about chinese artists just ask away, I know most of them personally now and know what is good and bad here. Checking out this forum is great, reminds me when I used to work in London for Bonhams and could buy original Banksy's for a grand even at auction. Actually Bonhams are holding a new sale in London next year 5th Feb called "Urban Art" which will just be Banksy's, Faile, Paul Insect, Haring, Micallef etc. take a look, think you guys might fnd it interesting. www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=EUR&screen=urbanart

Visit SHANGHAI π¨π³ China Street Art, Galleries, Events, by lostinshanghai on Dec 29, 2007 5:42:46 GMT 1, Hi McNuts Wang Guangyi is recognised as one of the most famous and most important Chinese contemporary artists, he has produced a number of very important early works but the majority of his work is very average, one trick pony, political image different brand, this could go on forever. The quality of the paintings arent always great but the prints that have been produced are fantastic, the small flaws and errors in the original painting (I hate seeing the grid in pencil behind the paint) have been replaced by even flat colours that look great. Really eye catching pieces. Dont get me wrong, great artist, some great works, lovely prints.
