Tristan Eaton πΊπΈ Street Art β’ Toy Designer β’ Hollywood LA , by Happy Shopper on Jul 29, 2014 16:17:21 GMT 1, I think it's that his normal portraits have elements of the person's face drawn in different styles, mixed with other stuff... the shark just looks like a flat silhouette filled with stuff.

The horse's head is completely different and that kinda takes away from the interest for me.

I'm lucky enough to own Tristan's 'Predator' and it is fabulous, so no reason this couldn't be much much better.

Agree with the consensus that his walls generally trump the prints; so much detail left out. I, too, have Predator on my wall and, while I love it, even it is a watered down version of the mural off which it's based.

the print just seems phoned in. even the colors look muted.

I, too, have Predator on my wall and, while I love it, even it is a watered down version of the mural off which it's based. I agree to the extent that I loved the 'Predator' wall (at least the photos of it I've been able to see) and its scale contributed to its power. But I also love the print. For me, it's a very successful screen print of a very powerful image. And I have no problem with the print being different - even elementally - from the wall on which it's based. No problem at all: in fact, I prefer it that way, since this grants uniqueness to the print. To me it's all about the success (or lack thereof) of the new way of expressing the image. 'Predator' was successful. From the looks of it, 'Musashi' is not.

Regarding Predator - Grayscale images and word overlay are two of my favorite elements in his work, both of which are left out of the print. For me, it makes the image feel lighter. I agree that a print can differ from a wall and still be successful, but for me personally, it would have been that much better.
Regarding scale - I've had the chance to see three of his walls in person and the magnitude of his work never ceases to amaze.

Tristan Eaton πΊπΈ Street Art β’ Toy Designer β’ Hollywood LA , by thriftypix on Feb 18, 2015 18:05:22 GMT 1, Understood. And, in general, agreed. In addition, I do think that the discrete bands of imagery in the screen print are in some ways less successful than the composition and color work of the wall. That said, when I see a shark, I think death. Not death unto us, but unto the more than 100 million (yes, MILLION!) sharks killed each year, mostly for their fins, to satisfy the taste that many humans have for shark fin soup. These are THE apex predators of the Ocean, folks. Without them, the ocean and by extension our planet are in deep trouble. With all that in mind, I appreciate the more "on the nose" imagery of the skull, barbed wire and spinal column - missing from the wall - that appears in the print.
Okay, I just stepped off my salt water soapbox. Back to the conversation about Tristan and Matt's latest work.
