Nononononono nooooooo!!!!! Not a good idea, dude In the long run, the heat will make the print brittle and deteriorate...

Art above a Radiator ?, by Run Pig Run on Apr 25, 2007 17:41:42 GMT 1, yeah, i've got an old scabby picture i've had over a radiator for years and the tape on the back dries to a crisp and peels away, then the heat starts on your print. If you have to have it over the radiator you could try getting a radiator cover from somewhere like B&Q ยฃ50-ยฃ100, this should direct the heat outwards instead of upwards. or do what i'm going to do - take the radiator off the wall and chuck it in a skip.

Art above a Radiator ?, by doublehelix on Jul 9, 2008 15:38:47 GMT 1, I've just received a rather overwhelming amount of artworks back from mr frameman, including a framed toxic mary that has to be seen to be believed (I'll attach crap camera-phone pics now and better ones once it's on the wall.)
Anyway my question is how bad an idea is it to hang framed artworks over radiators, will it damage them and if so in what way and over how long a period of time?
I now have 17 pieces to hang and if some don't go over radiators I'm going to have trouble hanging everything!
All advice gratefully received.
Here's the toxic mary:

Art above a Radiator ?, by Wiseblood on Jul 9, 2008 15:45:44 GMT 1, 17 pieces what else did you have done other than that it in the pics.
They say that hanging a piece over a radiator will dry the print out, i have two dolks above a radiator, they are my cheapest prints, but to honest that radiator is very rearly one. I think if you get one of those radiator box cover things, it will disperce the heat in a different way other than straight up into the prints.
Not much help i know

I have some work above radiators, been there a couple of years and no damage done! No doubt lots of people will disagree with me, and to be honest I don't know the long term effects!
You could always get underfloor heating installed!! ;D
As you can see!

Art above a Radiator ?, by Pattycakes on Jul 9, 2008 15:49:14 GMT 1, Much like hanging prints in sunlight just don't do it. Basically the silkscreen ink will hear up and crack. If you have etchings/lithograhs then they will be fine, but no silkscreens.

Wiseblood, they are a selection of Banksy, Walker, English, C215, K-Guy, Fairey and Langlands & Bell prints and originals.

Art above a Radiator ?, by Harveyn on Jul 9, 2008 16:13:08 GMT 1, Unfortunately like most of us you will end up having to put something over a radiator or two. I have 32 pieces hanging and I try to rotate the artwork and keep the radiators switched off. Its great fun in my house. I run round switching radiators off and my wife switches them back on. I also have light bulbs/spots strategically removed from certain places in the house for fear of damage even though most of my collection are originals.... ;D ;D ;D

Art above a Radiator ?, by Winter on Jul 9, 2008 18:37:40 GMT 1, I have a massive, freshly framed Peter Blake Union Jack. I have one wall available over a radiator and was thinking about getting a radiator cover. If I go for quite a deep one I reckon it should release hot air forward and away from the print. The print is an inkjet so hopefully it will be ok - any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Disconnect the radiator. Ones collection is more important than ones warmth.

Art above a Radiator ?, by dodge on Jul 9, 2008 19:04:37 GMT 1, The guy who does my framing specializes in conservation work. He said to never hang anything over a radiator as the changes in heat will cause the print paper to 'wave'. I ignored his advice initially as I too had no room to hang stuff! Unfortunately the print in question did become wobbly.
On a brighter note it did flatten out, so all was not lost! ;D

Art above a Radiator ?, by daley on Jul 9, 2008 20:54:58 GMT 1, Personally I wouldn't hang paintings over a radiator. As for prints, I'm really not that clued up on the various inks and their ingredients. Paint will eventually dry out and possibly crack. Would say the same for anything with glue on either, i.e. collage.
As for direct sunlight - that's self explanatory!

Art above a Radiator ?, by ruat caelum on Jul 9, 2008 21:42:15 GMT 1, I must admit I'm flabbergasted anyone would even consider hanging artwork over a working radiator. Forgive me if this sounds harsh, but that just betrays a complete lack of common sense. It's a bit like sticking something up in your bathroom.
If you are hanging anything of value (whether that be financial or sentimental), then for dog's sake keep it away from direct sunlight, or any sources of heat or humidity.
