Good question. There is an obvious answer.

denning originals, by corblimeylimey on Nov 15, 2007 19:07:48 GMT 1, Good luck Bigman, having seen your fantastic new purchase (one of the best in the show IMO) I'm not surprised something has to give.
As for Denning, I think his recent show had some of his best work yet, if it's not to your taste Pez fair enough, but I don't like this artist knocking, it's not very nice.

I agree, the Studio Crombie thread is much worse, I didn't participate in that at all but an opinion was asked for. I've got nothing against Pez at all, we all know what a great forum member he his and that he has a wide ranging choice of art, and that he has been polite in this thread, but I still consider it unnecessary, and I thought I should bring it up having met Bigman, seen his excellent purchase and because all this knocking could get out of hand, we've already had Mantis go through it and as a Mantis & Denning fan it's not nice to hear, it's very easy to knock.

denning originals, by pezlow on Nov 15, 2007 21:11:18 GMT 1, Personally I think a bit of open debate about an artists merits is fine. But I agree with you CBL that some of the knocking has got out of hand recently. I wouldn't want this place to become too sterile though. It is a game of opinions after all.
The denning phenomena is interesting though. All of sudden in July he came from nowhere and everyone was bigging him up, his work sold out. Now again we seem to have lots of sales. Props to anyone who likes his works (and it sounds like Bigman does) but the hype for Denning is incredible and cannot be realistically sustained.

I think he disappeared along with adrscib. He has done some nice work, but maybe suffered a bit of a backlash due to the hype.

denning originals, by mcnuts on Nov 16, 2007 21:16:03 GMT 1, baldwin still posts on his forum and is still around.. i forget the update. I am one of perhaps a few people who really likes dan's stuff and count the disneyland black horror as one of my favourite prints though do not own it. Then again, I'm not willing to pay 800GBP for it. 250GBP, bring it on.
As for denning, some lovers, some haters and some who don't care. I really like his work. Not all of it. Some of it is too dark for me but there are a lot of pieces i really like and also own a piece of his work. So I am bias. However as with any artist on this forum, you may get some people, not necessarily bigman as he has out his cash into another denning piece, swarming and buying on a whim then trying to sell it back to the board.
As for knocking art, some comments are nonconstructive and trite but then again, so is some of the stuff flogged on here. The studiochrome work is one example. Pants.
An inevitable feature of this forum is people flogging mediocre and subpar art hyping it up as the next best thing. You know why you are buying it (why you are selling it) and need to decide what you think the value is. But what we need to continue having is a debate on the merits of work here (perhaps a bit deeper than saying something is pants, though I do that often) offering feedback for artists who post their work and challenge hype. We wont always agree on what we all like but I'm glad there's the space to talk about it.
man was that a tangent or what? got distracted by fern cotton.....

Strangely enough I like Dan Baldwin's work a lot more now than I did when it was being hyped up like crazy.
It's let me actually enjoy it for what it is, rather than trying to evaluate it in the middle of some kind of buying frenzy, when you're forced to make comparisons with the biggest names on the 'scene'.
If you take his work on its merits, it's very very good. But I found it hard to come to this conclusion when he was being talked up as the second coming of Jesus.

denning originals, by Cocteau 101 on Nov 17, 2007 19:04:40 GMT 1, It's funny the way we have started to get little backlashs against certain artists work, Denning in particular, even though the show has now either sold out or a few pieces reserved there seems to be a general knocking, same with the Ian Francis prints. Both are very talented artists who imo will go from strength to strenghth in 2008. Money is obviously tight with most people at the moment, xmas coming up, a little dilution of confidence in prices etc etc. This shouldn't bed allowed to detract from the quality of the work, both artists are producing some stunning pieces and deserve due credit. For all those on an investment trip - this is still an infant market don't turn it a dead duck because you're shit scared of losing the money you have bought with to date. If you didn't like it in the first place you shouldn't have bought it!

denning originals, by a4mnt on Nov 17, 2007 20:47:15 GMT 1, Its not nice saying derogatory comments about artists on here, hence why i suggested to FPR that we didn't have a 'Worst Print of the Year award'. But this should also be a place of freedom of speech within reason, where different opinions and ideas can be exchanged. If someone loves an artist, they should be able to express that opinion. The same with not liking an artist.
Artists that peruse this forum should expect to hear both good and bad comments about their work. In fact, they should expect it and even look for it. Sometimes those bad comments can be more constructive in the long run than the good. Surely it is better to be talked about than not talked about at all. Anyone who has vented a creative urge into the public domain has to deal with this by-product of their talent. Actors are forever quoting the maxim that they do not read their reviews.
People are fragile things, but they can also remarkably resilient and it only takes a few knocks to harden someones resolve against the public judgement.
Surely we should encourage debate on here, but just not celebrate the negative aspects that it creates, otherwise we all just sound like yes men.

denning originals, by Cocteau 101 on Nov 17, 2007 20:54:54 GMT 1, Cracka - totally agree mate.
I was just trying to illustrate a backlash that I believe may not be directed at creativity or talent but merely as a result of adverse short term return or missing out on certain opportunities. Francis and Denning seem to be bearing the brunt of this at the moment. IMO Francis has immense talent and the quality fo the prints from all parties are stunning. I'm all for free debate and for exposing the strengths and weaknesses of artists - but it needs to be based on art not ill feeling or investment.

denning originals, by a4mnt on Nov 17, 2007 21:30:56 GMT 1, it is funny though that GD's originals all sold through art file and Rp recently, but don't seem to sell on the scondary market.
I think its Alderevans that is selling one on ebay and the price has been dropped twice at least so far. at ยฃ2650 buy now, its quite a way below the recent large pieces (it is 100 x 70cm), but not selling.
obviously it only needs one buyer to like the piece to buy, but i'm surprised that it and other GD originals haven't sold recently, regardless of what the prices are.

denning originals, by Daniel Silk on Nov 17, 2007 21:33:24 GMT 1, All the Artists being talked about have a strong growing group of fans that follow their work ;D I know things on here move very fast but thats not really how the art world in general works. I think we can expect too much from the artists at times If we don't have any new prints or canvases released every few months people start to get twitchy bit silly really.
Guy has been an Artist since before some of us were born! so art is a long term thing things take time, its like we expect artists to have a UK show, then an LA show within six months, then sell some pieces for ยฃ100,000+ at auction, then have a show at the Tate and so on ;D

From what I understand Denning is the biggest critic of his own work (having even thrown batches of it on a bonfire a few years ago) and is more than used to the knocks over his lengthy career as an artist. He takes great pride in what he finally allows to be shown.
I don't see why bigman or anyone else should be questioned or made to feel uncomfortable in any way about selling their possessions on this forum.
Who really gives a flying fuck? I'd imagine Denning doesn't. He's busy painting. He's showing his work. More and more people are seeing it. Some like/love it others don't.
So let's debate and chat about that and keep this place alive. Save the unnecessary insinuations/digs about selling for somewhere else. (This is a general comment not directed at any one person).
I agree with you pez that Denning has received a lot of hype since June/July, most of which of course he has nothing to do with. It can of course sometimes detract attention from the art and is a double edged sword. Time will of course tell but I feel that his gain in popularity is about something far more substantial than hype. The quality of his work is there for all to see IMO. His original Minotaur Woman (released as a print) and harveyn's Icarus original are especially superb.
