denning originals, by scavos on Nov 17, 2007 21:59:08 GMT 1, The pictures on rp don't do any of them justice when you compare them to cbl's great pics. Especially the Oil Painting. I envy you having seen them in the flesh bigman. Did they still smell of smoke? I'm sure I've heard that somewhere!

denning originals, by a4mnt on Nov 17, 2007 22:23:52 GMT 1, McNuts - that piece was from leigh wasn't it? Did we have a conversation about it?
I looked at it a few times before buying 'Typeface' and Asylum triptych. Great piece.
As for Oil painting, that really is lovely and the last of the canvasses to sell, shockingly enough.
I think Guy's work is creating interest at the moment as his canvasses are relatively affordable for us still. Needless to say the artistic merit needs no question. Admittedly I don't always like Guy's stuff, but some of it is just so fucking good.

denning originals, by mcnuts on Nov 17, 2007 22:28:33 GMT 1, indeed from leigh, and we did chat about it. picked this one up after my fav of the lot sold. missed it by a day as i hummed over the price. in the end, this one has a better story behind it . I managed to get it before the big big rush and had to sell *gasp* a Faile print of mine to make it happen. But very very glad i did.
PS Donnie Darko starting on BBC2 NOW
Edit: Dog, they are on canvas

denning originals, by Montubu7 on Nov 17, 2007 22:45:05 GMT 1, good points all around, the only reason i got defensive in the 1st place was because people on the forum were implying that i was a) selling it cause the "hype" was dying and wanted to make a quick buck B) or flipping them because i thought i could make some cash cause of his new show both totally untrue and i agree the forum should be there to discuss art in a critical way but just because some one is selling something "respected members" jump to the conclusion that they know why something is being sold on? personally i get a lot of good info off this forum but if anyone thinks im gonna buy something for 2 grand cause i think it will make money, then its a little dumb i buy loads of art that i love and no one talks about these artists on this forum and probably never will. but to jump at conclusions because you dont like it or they no the "obvious answer" to why some one is selling. balls and get off your high horse!! i personally love both francis and dennings work and could not give a rats tits if it makes a large return but constuctive critism is good not just dissing hutch and telling new forum members to invest in hutch, because its an in joke i think is a bit cruel. And what is a forums point but to discuss and share information with others bring on the negs red wines a killer
If any of the above was aimed at me i will remind you my comment was
Why does everyone seem to be selling denning at the moment?
If you took that the wrong way from me thats your own f**king fault....

McNuts - Thats the one I had on hold at the same time when I could not decide which one to go for. Its a beauty and whilst I am glad I made the choice I did yours comes a very very close second.

I don't think the comments were aimed at you directly.
I just get a little pissed off at some of the knocking. I'll admit I don't like all of Guy's work however I do admire it, the pieces I like I actually fuckin love. I bought Oil Painting because I think it is a really powerful piece, it speaks to me of ages gone past, modern day nihilism and an apocalyptic future. That might sound fuckin heavy but that is why I love it. As I've said before the Fawkesy piece just scared the living daylights out of me, a brilliant depiction but one I honestly couldn't look at for long without feeling uncomfortable, I admire how the piece makes me feel so uncomfortable. Going back to Oil Painting I want some pieces in my collection that really make me think, whilst others (mainly the Banksys - and that's why he is still a genius) that make me smile with their cleverness, humour and brilliantly understated execution.
Lets all chill and enjoy the stuff we have - we are all in a group, still a fairly unknown group / scene, and there is plenty more to come.

I couldn't get to Devon from Liverpool as my wife was working and the kids wanted me to play Guy Fawkes - i.e. burn a hole in my pocket for fireworks! Saw it the next night and just thought fuckin hell that's too good to pass. I'll post some pics when I get it.

I suspect it was aimed at me. Just to repeat bigman I never had a go at you for flipping, I never once mentioned flipping. If you think my comment was directed at you personally then you are wrong. I was replying to the question asked by thomas "why does everyone seem to be selling denning at the moment". My reply was a flippant one-liner (a joke) that people seem to have made in to some huge issue.
Just for the record I don't have any denning nor any denning for sale. My, rather mild comments, about denning therefore have nothing to do with the market or being concerned that I might lose my investment. I really can't see that me implying that I don't like guy denning is part of some huge backlash against him.
The forum should be about people expressing their views on art not some huge love-in with the artists.

Agree Pez, sorry to see this place turning more and more into a sycophantic love fest for a few artists collected by the very few, and who happen to occassionally post on here. People who are hyping these self same artists just come across as rather desperate, I think they do more harm than good. Just post the image for christ sake and let people decide for themselves. Personally i'd never hype an artist that I was interested in buying to the board, it would just mean I ended up paying more and yes, I do find it strange that in one post someone can be bigging up an artist, and in the next, selling his work and often at the same time on different threads.

I'm all for the expression of views but at the same type expressing that you admire an artists work is not necessarily sign of a sycophantic lovefest as neither expressing a dislike of an artist is a condemnation. As for Denning, as I said earlier in the thread some bits I really like others I admire but wouldn't own.
I'm bored of the whole selling argument and to be honest no one is ever going to get rich quick from investing in this type of art, if they think thet are they are naive. We won't see another Banksy, he is a one off as most great artists are, and the next one certainly won't be found through a forum. However, the forums (all of them) do a great job in giving people the chance to find out about stuff they wouldn't normally see. Unless we had some sort of elitist qualification system to identify those not worthy to join - the intent being to keep flippers at bay - there is not much we can do, except continue to express our views and enjoy the art we own.

No arguments there mate...just a bit annoying that we have a board with god knows how many thousand members, 7 or 8 of whom own a Denning, the amount of space and threads dedicated to him is absolutely ridiculous relative to the people interested. It's just constant.

No arguments there mate...just a bit annoying that we have a board with god knows how many thousand members, 7 or 8 of whom own a Denning, the amount of space and threads dedicated to him is absolutely ridiculous relative to the people interested. denning originals, by stuey09 on Nov 18, 2007 13:18:37 GMT 1, Just for the record I don't have any denning nor any denning for sale. You've made a good point Nu, but I still believe most people on here (that actually post) will give an honest opinion of an artists work. What's more those comments will be polite rather than cruel. Last night was a good example in the 'In the Making' thread. It was also good to see that the criticism was well taken.

Agree mate, let's hope it stays that way, thought Pez's remark was harmless and really tame, it wasn't even a criticism. The response was instant and really defensive from owners of Dennings work. Think those reactions stiffle a good ol debate.
