That must have been his work pre 1950 or it would have been atypical (not 2 or 3 primary colors) as his canvases were hundreds of thousands of dollars (some in the millions) even back in the early 80s. Though i suppose it could have been oil on paper as he did a lot of those too and they may have been in that price range. That's one of those stories you only tell over alcohol.

Mark Rothko π±π» Abstract Painting β’ Art For Sale, by Deleted on Oct 2, 2008 16:39:35 GMT 1, well the story is that he had a buddy who's grandmother had passed and he was liquidating her stuff. One happened to be a drawing/small painting that was personalized to her.

Mark Rothko π±π» Abstract Painting β’ Art For Sale, by Existencil on Oct 4, 2008 15:08:48 GMT 1, I've just purchased a Rothko print this week but I'm usnure of its origin. It's from 1999 and produced by VG Bild Kunst - a german print house I think. It doesn't have a number or a signature, but it's labelled 'edition 5'.
Does anybody have any idea where this is from and if its worth having valued?
Cheers.

Mark Rothko π±π» Abstract Painting β’ Art For Sale, by aginghippie on Oct 5, 2008 4:24:28 GMT 1, Haunch of Venison Gallery in NYC have an Abstract Expressionism show on at the moment that's well worth a visit. There are three Rothko's including one with a luminous orange/pink ground which is very striking. My personal favorite form the show is a work by Lee Krasner, Another Storm.

www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/rothko-in-britain
9 September 2011-26 February 2012 Gallery 4
n 1961 the Whitechapel Gallery held the first solo show of American artist Mark Rothko in Britain. This landmark exhibition is brought vividly to life through the Galleryβs archives of original photographs, letters from the artist and new recordings of visitorsβ memories presented alongside Rothkoβs painting Light Red Over Black (1957).
Mark Rothko (1903β1970) was part of a generation of American painters whose style became known as Abstract Expressionism. From the 1950s he used muted colours to make luminous rectangles seemingly hover on the surface of the canvas. While realising his Whitechapel Gallery exhibition he outlined precise instructions of how he wanted his work to be displayed, such as the lighting levels and hanging height of paintings. All this created an immersive experience for the viewer. Reviewing the show in The New Statesman art critic David Sylvester wrote, βFaced with Rothkoβs paintings at Whitechapel, one feels oneself unbearably hemmed-in by forces buffeting oneβs every nerveβ.
The display sheds new light on Rothkoβs connection with Britain, highlighting the strong relationships he formed during his trip in the summer of 1959 and an era of dialogue between British and American artists.

Mark Rothko π±π» Abstract Painting β’ Art For Sale, by century21girl on Oct 9, 2012 23:29:11 GMT 1, The Tates restorers will have it back as good as new but it is worrying that it might mean more paintings go behind glass now. A very childish act and I don't think its justifiable as an act of art.
