Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by blank on May 24, 2011 17:29:57 GMT 1, New Yorkers know them because they're everywhere; but you probably never heard of them.
There are many, but among the ones I enjoy the most, for their random impulsiveness and wit, are JIM JOE and Moustache Man. Simple. Pure. Discreet.
Subway Art Blog has decent intro articles about them. Check more out by typing their name in google images.
JIM JOE: Article: subwayartblog.com/2010/07/02/this-is-jim-joe/
One could argue that Jim Joe is not a graffiti artist at all. This is for several reasons. First, he seems to ignore many of the stylistic laws of the graffiti scene. Graffiti is his medium more so than it is than his genre. Also, Jim Joe does not cite any big graffiti artists as his influences.
Jim Joe has a few different hand writing styles, all of which are probably frowned upon by the graffiti community. In sharp contrast of wildstyle graffiti that adorns most urban streets, Jim Joeβs writing is as simple as it gets.
Moustache Man: Article: subwayartblog.com/2011/05/05/the-man-behind-the-moustache/
SAB: What are the reactions like to your work? Any favorites?
MM: On the platform and on the street people are pretty positive. Most laugh, some give suggestions. Recently this guy saw me drawing on Lady Gaga and he was like βYou should draw some cum on her tits.β Good advice like that. Iβve only had a few people give disapproving looks or say something negative. I guess itβs about the same love/hate ratio on the internet. Most mentions I come across are positive, while a few people just really hate it. One guy said Duchamp is spinning in his grave because of them. I liked that one. Donβt know who Duchamp is, but it sounds funny. JUST KIDDING. Duchamp is the guy married to Fergie, right? Wait, when did he die!?!

I think those people living in countries such as North Korea, China, Syria, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia etc may have something to say about your use of the word 'repression'. He got caught for doing something the authorities deem illegal, and in the whole scheme of things actually isn't that ground breaking. Funny? maybe, but not exactly worth getting worked up about.

I'm not at all into tagging or bombing and find no pleasure in seeing the subway and every other wall scrawled on, but I think MM is clearly on one side of the line.
I also just found an article about Poster Boy www.artinfo.com/news/story/30289/new-york-police-arrest-poster-boy-maybe/
Pretty much the same story, I guess.

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by blank on Jun 28, 2011 15:49:43 GMT 1, Sure, it never matters until its too late. And when this places turns into North Korea, what will you do about it? Probably nothing, because it will always be worse somewhere else. If you really care about the core, you would have some respect for every single individual that has the balls to step outside say enough with the insidious bullshit in their lives. If art is just about art, you're fucked.

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by alivefromnewyork on Sept 15, 2012 17:45:04 GMT 1, hey dudes, bumping this thread up to reveal that Moustache Man is a longtime (well, maybe not that long) UAA member! And I'm telling my story in a one-man show at UCB Theatre in New York. So if we've got any New Yorkers in the house, come check it out this Wednesday, Sept 19th! If you're into graffiti and you're down for a laugh, it's worth the $5. More info here: newyork.ucbtheatre.com/shows/view/3175

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by alivefromnewyork on Sept 16, 2012 19:42:29 GMT 1, Thanks for all the kind words, guys! Truly means a lot. I've been getting a healthy dosage of hateful internet comments lately thanks to some recent press about a clothing chain ripping me off (see www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2199276/NY-graffiti-artist-Patrick-Waldo-claims-Zara-stole-design-turned-17-T-shirt.html) so it's nice to get some positive feedback from people in the street art community. Wearology, glad you're coming! Introduce yourself to me after the show, will ya? I'd like to meet you!

I second that !! I would add Princess Hijab to the list (considering the fact she always claimed that there is nothing politicial in her guerrilla art, just art) - www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/features/rare-interview-with-urban-artist-princess-hijab-2297761.html

And yes Zara brand stole his moustache idea - www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/04/zara-rip-off-patrick-waldo-moustache-street-_n_1855486.html
And he has indeed an exhition at UCB soon... so I wonder about this fake arrestation buzz...

I think NYPD has waaaay too much time to spend. On the other end, no one won't even care about Zara stealing his idea.

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by Wearology on Sept 20, 2012 12:44:00 GMT 1, One of our more infamous forum members "alivefromnewyork" did a one man stand up routine in NYC last night that focused on his experience as a graffiti artist known as "Moustache Man" and the ramifications on his subsequent arrest. The show was absolutely hilarious and I recommend it to anyone that either lives in the NY metro area or is just visiting town. After the show, I had the pleasure of meeting "Patrick" and he was extremely nice and approachable. He was nice enough to stache up one of my favorite pieces of art from another forum member artist "Agent Provocateur" called "Let Them Eat Kate". Patrick informed me that several forum members have been sorted out with their request to obtain some of his art for their collections as well. Thanks "alivefromnewyork" for being so generous !!!!!

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by ilmambo on Nov 6, 2012 19:30:10 GMT 1, alright, here's the story: I bought a couple of framed pieces from Moustache Man and unfortunately the glass of one of them shattered in transit and it got a bit damaged. when I informed Moustache Man he promptly sorted me out with a replacement. I know that there is some interest for moustace man pieces on the forum and since this piece is lightly damages but it looks "vintaged" to me and still frameable, I decided to start a charity auction and offer it to forumites.
I've been in touch with Moustache Man and I asked him to choose a charity, so 100% of the profits will go to ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ), which is doing a great job helping animals affected by the storm Sandy. www.aspca.org/
the piece (signed and dated on the back) will come ready to be framed, mount size is 28x35 cm and will fit inside a 11 x 14 inches frame, which can be bought for cheap on amazon.
here are some pictures, the scruff and marks are not that noticeable unless you get really close to the piece (or you take pictures of it with a flash...) and as I said before... now it looks vintaged.
and a pic of the piece framed, before the disaster in transit...
if you need more pics or info, just PM me. don't be too fussy and start your bids... it's for a good cause. I'll close the auction at midnight UK, this sunday.
thanks ;D
