Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by fairplay1974 on Nov 29, 2012 9:45:25 GMT 1, Isn't that the same for many street pieces and street artists?! I can think of several pieces on my walls where the 'punch line' works much better on the street where they were originally created, but that adds to my appreciation of them rather than anything else....And I don't need to explain my art to anyone!
EDIT: Didn't mean that to come across feisty either, just adding to the discussion and I welcome and take on all opinions.

I still stand by my reason for buying Kate, as stated above. But as you correctly say, each to their own.

I've spoken to him and he seems a really nice and very amenable guy but apart from being a little bit of street art history I'm not really sure where it's all going and although I like the idea I haven't bought from him. I know he has a show coming up so I guess that will be more of a gauge of where all this is heading.

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by Guest on Nov 29, 2012 20:37:18 GMT 1, Thing is with this, its NY centric. Most people in NY would have seen a moustache man piece...the press went mad over it there. The police then hunted him down and it made the news. I like it anyway. Just saying.
Also you might disagree but kaws started off the same way, so dont give me that crap. Drawing hands and faces on stuff. Infact early kaws stuff was terrible and still is unless your a guy in his mid 30s who buts plastic toys. Then it seems to be perfectly fine.

People don't get it unless your from New York or get a buzz from seeing a artist who gets their name up everywhere.

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by Guest on Nov 29, 2012 20:48:34 GMT 1, Oh wonderful, lets paint crosses on eyes and draw worms everywhere. You have to start somewhere, he has only being doing this a short time. How about you wait to see what the show is like and then pass judgement as you quite obviously fit into the demographic that was described.
Exhibit A: crosses and worms growing fungus out their head.

As the quote on the bottom of your posting reads "You Must Be New". I am new to this forum but still don't sound as clueless as you when it comes to talking about the NYC street art scene. Your wrong when you say most people would have seen a Moustache Man piece. Have you ever been to NYC? Or are you going based on what you read in one or two article posted.
I am not going to debate on the work being good or not because that is subjective but when you claim that the intrigue for his work is because the "press went mad" and the "police hunted him down" you sound foolish. It's a blip on a radar bro. Nothing more. And I give the guy credit for using it to his advantage and having people like you buy it.

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by Guest on Nov 29, 2012 21:01:23 GMT 1, Thanks for posting that pic Freerange..check out the date..yup 1997! 15 years ago, Kaws was smashing it. He was doing something new. Taking corporate imagery and giving it a new identity. Using adverts to advertise himself. After all, that's what graffiti is all about. Getting your name out there. You really want to compare Kaws with moustache man? I'm done. Keeping buying 'em if they make you happy. But I can't help but feel that the 'artist' is whacking out far too many of these 'original' works. It was never about the money with Kaws back in '97. I'm not having a specific pop at moustache man here, but can you say that same about some of the newer artists on the scene? They seem to be more happy to use the street to get in the gallery and sell sell sell.
Dont be a fool. Im not comparing kaws now with bluddy moustaches.
Im saying he started doing exactly the same stuff. Sure you would have said the same in 1997
It is not about the money now with moustache man, infact he only does things occasionally. Kaws on the other hand...... Weird boy doll in his pants covering his face anyone.
Sure i will take one to put in my glass case. Excuse me while i go put away my bape trainers and my 35th birthday cards.

I'm sorry, but I do disagree with you. I like my MM Kate. Dry much, for the reason I stated near the start of this thread. But with the greatest of respect to MM, kaws work is simply on another level. And that's coming from someone who is not lucky enough to own anything at all by kaws. I don't think you are ding MM any favours by trying to make such comparisons. It's a shame that some people appear to be taking quite such a dislike to his work. It is just what it is. Certainly not worth getting hot under the collar about, imo

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by Coach on Nov 29, 2012 22:39:44 GMT 1, check this out seeing as no one called it...just thought I'd let you in on the secret this was 'created' by a mate of mine, about 10mins after I showed him moustache man for the first time!
I'm afraid I don't agree with this point either, unless I'm missing your point. The "anyone could have done that" argument is used over and over often about anything other than fine art. The reality is that he did do it, no one else. I've heard people say the same about pollock, rothco etc. (and no I am definatley not comparing MMs work with those artists!)

Moustache Man πΊπΈ Patrick Waldo β’ New York Moustache Tag, by nex on Nov 29, 2012 23:48:34 GMT 1, Not sure I really had a point coach, just a mildly amusing observation... Art can be absolutely anything anyone considers it to be... It's entirely subjective.
I do however think that moustache man whilst mildly amusing, has very little to it, not even real history on the streets which for something as monosyllabic as this it probably needs as a story to give it weight and longevity on home walls. Without it, I guess the main attraction is the pretty ladies behind the moustache and the simple joke?

I bought a framed ad. that got damaged in transit because the glass shattered, he promptly offered a replacement free of charge and I just received it -- with 4 extra ads as a "sorry" because the replacement is bigger than the previous and probably it won't fit inside the previous frame.
thanks Patrick. ;D
