hype and new prints/must have prints, by loucastel on Jan 29, 2012 21:22:42 GMT 1, Anyone know of any book that touch on this subject , or just money in art in general ?
There are loads of books out there on starting out collecting art, problem is you can read all the books in the world and you're heart can still rule you're head, when artist's and their work are hyped and talked up, like when you see pages and pages of post's going on about how mega this or that artist or work is, or in the media, that is why so many people buy works only to think a couple of months down the line, why the hell did I buy that!!
So easy to get caught up in the moment, so before anyone buys any piece of art I guess they should think long and hard about their reasoning for buying it, caveat emptor!!

Iโm not after books with the idea of buying, thinking about writing my thesis on a subject like this. So looking for books to use as reference ,About how artist/galleryโs manipulate the market and so on

This one is a bit old now but still worth a read,.........The Art of the Steal: Inside the Sotheby's-Christie's Auction House Scandal by Christopher Mason.
Also who fits in where in the art world,..........Seven Days in the Art World

hype and new prints/must have prints, by mojjac on Mar 19, 2012 20:18:24 GMT 1, also i can not understand why anyone would want a unsigned banksy they sat around for years on pow and you would be better off buying a west country prince print. Better off buying a fake? waste of money. You will never get your money back on a fake. Plus the quality is suspect.
For ยฃ50 I would not be concerned about having a West Country Prince replica print and not getting the money back. If I had it for many years I would feel that ยฃ50 was well spent. What would gut me is spending 15 times that amount for the same picture when I could get it for ยฃ50 and have a few holidays down the caravan on Canvey and a few trips up to the Appleby fair with the left over spenders.

Isn't the WCP actually doing something very similar to what Sunday B Morning did with the Warhol pieces - yes they are replicas and are marked clearly as such on the back but they are produced exactly the same way as the original Banksy's.
Sunday is now recognised as a legitimate copy of a warhol and carries a premium as such......and as you say, anything that gives you a weekend in Canvey has to be good.....doesnt it

hype and new prints/must have prints, by rperry on Apr 12, 2012 16:52:51 GMT 1, Hey art, no they are not, as Sunday B Morning had the original screens.
I believe they were the original printers of those works as well but I'm not 100% on that.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by kingleopald on Apr 12, 2012 17:14:28 GMT 1, I think the thing that separates the few from the herd is being original . shepard fairey, banksy and Damien hirst were all the first to do exactly what they do, Imitators follow but they don't have the same voracity and will never be as sought after The three you mention are the imitators but do it better than the originators sometimes.
I agree with you kimble. The three mentioned did nothing 'greatly' original, they were just able to present it in an original way.
They also had a bit of fortune. As with everything, luck is as significant as talent. They struck chords at the right moment and once the hype monkey started jumping they could do no wrong.
