hype and new prints/must have prints, by Cedric Mnich on Dec 29, 2011 10:44:51 GMT 1, Some hints regarding Invader increasing "hype" The reason might simply be the fact that he was quite present in ETTGS Banksy movie. Quite a few people have seen the movie and brought new peepers into Urban Art scene. The fact that Invader has pieces which can be seen everyday in worldwide major cities helps him get known. More and more people appreciate his invaders and as a consequence people want to own a piece of his work... This year, the Paris show was an incredible success. There were thousands of people at the opening and I felt like going to a rockstar concert. The fact that the number and size of editions is small makes demand far superior to supply. Simple mathematics. There is not much flipping for Invader so it's really fans and collectors around. And increasing prices on secondary market will make things worse because greed will get on stage...

hype and new prints/must have prints, by klyde on Dec 29, 2011 10:45:20 GMT 1, Itโs basically a relatively small group of nerdy men with way too much time and disposable income that keeps the shitty urban art wheel turning with self hype fueled by greed, pig ignorance and bad taste. Its days are very much numbered.
Happy new year.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by Stinky Pete on Dec 29, 2011 10:46:40 GMT 1, I think the thing that separates the few from the herd is being original . shepard fairey, banksy and Damien hirst were all the first to do exactly what they do, Imitators follow but they don't have the same voracity and will never be as sought after Shepard has never had an original idea, ever.
but how he presents ideas is, like the obama image for instance

A quick search for russian political art will prove my point. And the Obama image was not his own, it was the work of an AP photographer. Not original.

So what ? There are hundreds of artists basing their work from photos. It starts becoming a problem when the thin line of plagiarism is crossed. When you are making a portrait of a famous person, do you think all artists can take their own picture ? This is totally ridiculous. The originality here is into making an iconic portrait styled with agraphical treatment by Fairey which dramatically improved the original pic taken by the AP photographer. The original pic has no artistic interest whatsoever except for newsfeed illustration. If Fairey had not some fame and made some big bucks out of this poster, AP would never had sued him. They just wanted their share of the $cake. For illustration purpose, see the original pic and Shep Fairey result below : www.barack-obama-now.com/blog/?p=1423

I think the most inspiring thing would be to save the piece from destruction and send it back to Invader instead of ebaying it (anyway Invader would never authenticate it so it would have a very limited market value). If Invader is a generous guy, he might exchange it with a very nice piece to thank for the salvaged piece, which would be a far clever thing : Invader would get a history piece and the person would get an original piece in exchange. Nice win-win situation.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by Cedric Mnich on Dec 29, 2011 11:26:16 GMT 1, ^^^ shepard fanboy alert.
Ridiculous remark. I like a lot of his work, own only 3 prints and 2 books and I consider quite many Shep Fairey pieces closer to plagiarism to original art. I consider I can make difference between Original, Inspired, Reappropriated and Plagiarized work. Problem is the boundary is thin and varies according to lawyers work I guess. Invader's work is reappropriated, certainly not original. Taito could have sued his ass since for 10 years or so.

Not sure you should include Ai Weiwei in that sentence

hype and new prints/must have prints, by Daniel Silk on Dec 29, 2011 11:47:34 GMT 1, How is actual worth decided? Apparently by you, via the method of a star rating. A rating which currently holds Dan Kitchener, Steve Powers, Dalek and Arkiv Vilmansa in higher regard on this forum than the likes of Bast, Os Gem, Dran, Beejoir, Choe and Kaws. And only adds to the "hype" by giving Dolk, Invader, Ai Weiwei, and D*Face a five star rating. It is simply a mechanism designed by you to create hype around certain artists, whilst not actually reflecting any actual values (other than your own). I would understand its existence much better if say for example it was only reflecting a word count for the particular artist's name in discussion on the forum. You did ask.
Your opinion.
How is actual worth decided?

By ebay from the look of things... A recent board member is offering items judged by the ebay benchmark minus a little bit.
Not saying it's wrong... just a little fact.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by Cedric Mnich on Dec 29, 2011 12:12:37 GMT 1, imho, actual worth should be a calculated average of secondary market concluded sales prices on a recent period of time I would say... Shown price on ebay does not mean it is actually worth that price... e.g. : I currently have my Handiedan print on ebay FS. There are two identical prints FS on ebay, sellers asking 299 USD for it (they've been up there for a while it seems). Mine is up for 150 USD or 200 USD for immediate purchase. It's a relist, no bid so far (but 6 watchers, auction ending in 10 hours, we shall see).

hype and new prints/must have prints, by ABC on Dec 29, 2011 13:36:33 GMT 1, Really? I thought it was decided through the Urban Art Awards? I think it's interesting to see what votes the "Hyped" Artists get.
I think the awards are a total waste of time, what do they prove?. It would be interesting to know how many people actually vote. Then compare that to actual members who are registered who just sit back, read, never post, a have only one reason for joining. The art market is a little larger than this forum (not putting it down, just making a point) Yes, hype can be created on these boards, but most of the older members/collectors have wised up, unlike some who still think the art train is still rolling. Lets be honest, some of the latest releases are so very poor but still the prices rise, why? because some mug will buy them.

But as long as these mugs keeps buying it, what does that say about the art? I think the art is worth what the marked is willing to pay. The rest is just personal opinions.

Its open for you to nominate and you to vote! The one who gets the most votes wins! cant get anymore simple than that. If you think your voted opinion is a "waste of time" and doesn't "prove" anything, thats up to you

hype and new prints/must have prints, by saint on Dec 29, 2011 14:33:36 GMT 1, Must have prints are decided on using a random number generator at syndicate meetings.
Hype is then applied by select syndicate members, all skilled in covert hype spreading techniques. The remaining syndicate members are then free to profit on the weak and feeble.
But shhhh, cos its a secret.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by Deleted on Dec 29, 2011 15:07:06 GMT 1, About the best example of hype I can think of is Mr Brainwash. Very well documented in the Exit through the gift shop. A clever guy getting quotes from Banksy and Obey to promote his show. Whipped up a storm of publicity and had people queuing to get into a show from an artist who's work they hadn't even seen. Giving free prints away helped. I like what I have seen of MBW as a person(a real character), but his art is poor at best. Self promotion or Hype?.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by .dappy on Dec 29, 2011 15:08:09 GMT 1, 1) Buy art because you like it. 2) If you buy art for investment - then prices will go up and prices will go down - just like any other investment vehicle. 3) If you buy art for 2) and the 'price' of it does go down, but you bought it because of 1) then the 'value' of it is remains high. 4) The price of an item is purely based on i) supply and demand and ii) what someone is willing to pay for an item ... it is a transaction between two parties ... simples! This can clearly be seen in stock markets, buying a house, buying a second hand car etc etc.
Recent 'popular' artists I kind of like but would be choosy what I bought, partly because I do not get all of their work (in no particular order): Dolk, Dran, Charming Baker, Geddes, Eine, Dface, J Keyes
Shout me down for 'recent' eg Eine and Dface and yes I do have some of their stuff, but it is 1) above
I personally like micallef even though he has bombed price wise. I like Paul Insect, but he has been poor (IMO) for the past couple of years (since about happy dreams 2009) until his recent Triptease Revue at PNB, C215, Penny (although he could be heading for the list above? didn't get squid, like bugs, and money but not all of it), invader, Bast, faile. There are others (Whatson, polly m, pahnl etc) but those are the mainstream ones (whatever that means!)
If you do like Invader, then Albino is a Holy Grail and many thanks to a forum member I got one after searching and waiting for many years. I also have his first embossed series from 2009 and that is why I will prob not collect any more of his prints for collecting sake (its an easy trap to fall into buying 'all' of an artist and not necessarily to do with hype).
Like many others who have been collecting for a number of years, I am moving onto smaller editions, AP's (again whatever that means these days) and OGs, but I still LOVE all of the art that I have bought.
Invader: Albino Signed ;D

Yeah, Mr Brainwash is an Interesting one
"Self promotion or Hype?" Im not sure we can blame an artist for promoting himself its a difficult question, and Im not really sure of the answer

hype and new prints/must have prints, by jonti on Dec 30, 2011 0:15:00 GMT 1, As much as we all hate the hype and the opportunist twaaats it brings to the scene with respect the inflated prices and not being able to buy something 1st hand without a gigantic pile of hassle, we as art lovers are a fickle bunch. I am sure every single one if us wants a piece nobody else has. And if it's a piece everybody else wants, be it due to hype, talent, or association, we will pay for it. And because we don't have luck/money/contacts/long enough tongues to grab it from Pickles On Walls, we pay what it takes to get it. Because many strive to be individual, to be a talking point, and bring culture home and hang it on our walls for the root of all art buying evil - the love of it. Supply and demand is a b'stard but it gets us what we want.

Because many strive to be individual, to be a talking point, and bring culture home and hang it on our walls for the root of all art buying evil - the love of it. Supply and demand is a b'stard but it gets us what we want.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by pezlow on Jan 4, 2012 23:36:16 GMT 1, Itโs basically a relatively small group of nerdy men with way too much time and disposable income that keeps the s**tty urban art wheel turning with self hype fueled by greed, pig ignorance and bad taste. Its days are very much numbered. Happy new year.
Ha ha! This post made me laugh.

hype and new prints/must have prints, by loucastel on Jan 29, 2012 18:23:53 GMT 1, I just think it's a shame when prices get talked up and people new to art get sucked in thinking it is the must have new piece of art.
